Starting a second life with life social dance
Chairman Kiyeol Lee of Korea Life Social Dance Association

Not many people expected in Korea that social dance would one day become part of our culture. It was regarded as obscene in the 60s and 70s and the dancers often had to face crackdown and reproof. Today, things have changed: there are a lot of dance halls and academies flourishing their businesses and the media encourages people to engage in the dance to lead a healthy and vigorous life.

Shedding new light on value of social dance
In the age of homo-hundred, there is an increasing demand for healthy and happy old life. Many people are engaging in Sport for All and life social dance in particular in Korea is on an upward trajectory. Numerous courses are being provided to mainly the middle and old ages at community and cultural centers nationwide and local governments are competitively holding contests. And <Power Korea> found that Chairman Kiyeol Lee of the Korea Life Social Dance Association (established in August 2007) has been one who has played a pivotal role in spreading the dance in Korea. He came to know about the dance by chance but has exerted effort in systematizing it through years of research and practice.

“Social dance in fact can encompass all kinds of dances. It spread to the world from Europe and has been developed to new styles such as rumba, salsa and tango by being mixed with unique culture of each country. It came to Korea with the US Army after the Korean War and has developed into unique sextuple rhythm dance called ‘Korean jitterbug’. It is an art developed based on decorum, and mutual respect alongside theory and training, therefore, are a must to create a harmonious and graceful movement” explains Lee.

Lee introduced systematic training programs based on his years of research and experience and upgraded social dance to life social dance with emphasis on precise steps and movements. Numerous companies and organizations are inviting Lee for a class on a regular basis and he so far has fostered 1,500 instructors and thousands of course completers.

Spreading sound dance culture in Korea
Lee emphasized on the importance of the professional dance institutions’ systematic approach to curriculum development. He was the one who gave a social dance class for the first time in Korea at Incheon National University and opened a social dance course at Kyonggi University Lifelong Education Center in 2012.

“I had to encounter a strong objection about the dance course from the university at first as it could put a blemish on its image. I then suggested professors to try jitterbug, blues, trot and tango by themselves first before making a decision and this actually worked. The course now is filled with students and has grown to be one of the most popular subjects of the center. Also, I’m often asked to give a class from local universities and this is a really good sign for the dance to contribute to creating a sound dance culture in Korea. Each country has its own dance such as waltz in Austria and salsa in Cuba. We also have our own and it might be good idea to spread ours to the world and that is what we, the association, are currently working on.”

Lee also showed his ambition to hold international social dance contest in the future. We need energy if we are to start a healthy second life and social dance in this respect certainly is rising as one of the best choices to build a sound body and social relation today.
