Fostering Peace-Oriented Future Leaders
The Graduate Institute of Peace Studies,
Kyung Hee University (Professor Hong Ki-Joon)

Advancement in science and technology has bound the world as an organic community over time and space. A decision made today not only affects local communities and the nation but the whole humanity on the earth. The Graduate Institute of Peace Studies (GIP), Kyung Hee University, pursues a new paradigm towards a global village and promotes the idea of Global Common Society.

Call For Security And Prosperity Of Humanity
The Graduate Institute of Peace Studies was founded in 1984 as the Korea’s first international graduate school and as a cradle of peace education. The goal of GIP is to foster peace-oriented leaders and specialists who will make contribution to world peace and humanitarian interests. Under the motto ‘Generalist As Well As Specialist’, GIP has exerted its unsparing effort in fostering global leaders equipped with versatility and capability. Hong has built his reputation as a specialist in the research field of multilateral security cooperation in Europe and in Northeast Asia. He joined GIP, his alma mater, in 2001 as a professor.

“Former Chancellor Choue Young Seek (deceased), Hong said, founded GIP to foster young talents who will contribute to world peace and lead the coming age of Northeast Asia. In accordance with the founding philosophy, we value more of challenging spirit and devotion to national development as well as humanity of the whole world over one’s academic or career background. The chosen students are given full scholarship covering all the costs from tuition fee to accommodation.”

GIP is consisted of three academic areas: Peace and Global Governance, Asia-Pacific Studies, and New Politics and Future Governance with common ground in humanity, society, comprehensive thinking, practical search for alternative world order, and peace-oriented personality training. GIP’s fame is conveniently recognized by its long nickname ‘The Gateway To United Nations And International Organizations’. As if to prove, GIP has produced more than 500 peace-oriented specialists and leaders for the last 32 years with 10% working for the UN and international organizations. Most of GIP graduates are working in academia, governmental and non-governmental sectors, journalism etc., devoting themselves to promoting the founding philosophy of GIP. In recognition of the GIP’s contribution to international peace promotion, GIP was awarded the 1993 UNESCO Prize for Peace Education.

Asia’s First Master’s Course In United Nations and the Art of Peace
Hong majored in Northeast Asian studies at GIP in which he cultivated his vision for the era of Northeast Asia. He then went to Belgium to study cooperative models of Europe at KU Leuven and obtained a master’s degree in European studies and PhD in international relations. His doctoral dissertation ¡¸The CSCE Security Regime Formation: An Asian Perspective¡¹ was published by the Macmillan in 1997 and attracted a great attention from academic circles. Back to Korea 1996, he has published many articles and books on the topic. As recognition of his academic achievements, his biography was included in the Marquis Who’s Who in the World in 2016.  He also served as an expert member of the Presidential Committee on Northeast Asian Cooperation Initiative during the Roh Moo-hyun Administration and has taken part as an advisor in materializing Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative in the current Park Administration.
“GIP proudly presents globally prestigious specialists in the faculty. Next year, we are opening a new master course in United Nations and the Art of Peace for the first time in Asia on the agreement with UNITAR (United Nations Institute for Training and Research) and WFUNA (World Federation of United Nations Associations) and the course will be coordinated with internship programs at global offices of UNITAR including Geneva and New York. We, therefore, are confidently saying that GIP provides world class knowledge and training and we will keep exerting our utmost effort in fostering global leaders with right mind and attitude.”
