The trend tells that the taste itself cannot guarantee a success in restaurant franchise nowadays but the visual which is increasingly important, in terms of marketing, due to the explosive popularity of photo-based SNS such as Instagram. <Power Korea> met Co CEOs Yu Geun-mo and Yu Geun-chan of Rustic Comfort.

The Chicken Spiced With Style
Walking the pedestrian alongside with the apartment block in front of Kangwon National University Chuncheon Campus for 250 meters, you can see a restaurant with pinky and bluish neon sign hung on bricked wall. It is Rustic Comfort, a chicken and waffle restaurant. Opening the heavy door and stepping inside wows you first with the splendid chandelier hanging in the center. Then the warm wooden tables and vintage concept walls invite you comfortably to a seat you put your eye on. 

“The combination of chicken and waffle, CEO Yu Geun-mo explains, is one of the common foods in the southern states of the U.S. There are a few chicken and waffle restaurants in Korea but many people still don’t know about the food. So I examined the business potential and opened Rustic Comfort.” 

Yu marinates chicken thighs with 10 kinds of herbs and ingredients to give tender taste and flavor and bakes waffles every morning to keep freshness and sweet taste. The combination of chicken and waffles then is completed with sliced spring onions on top. Chick & Cheese, on the other hand, is made of crispy chicken and fries topped with 100% natural cheese melted in the oven to give fantastic visual and is finished with basil. Yu only uses fresh ingredients and changes the vegetable oil after frying every 30 chickens to give clean taste. It is an additional pleasure to enjoy illy coffee at KRW 3,000-4,000 at Rustic Comfort. 

Growing Together Is The Key To Success
Rustic Comfort opened its door last September but people’s response is explosive especially on blogs and SNS. The unique interior is also done by Co CEOs Yu Geun-mo and Yu Geun-chan. “We used the bricks that came from the ruins of more than 100 year old houses in China. The floor material is Italian and the restroom tiles are Spanish. The pizza plates are also Italian.” 

Yu once ran a chicken restaurant of major franchise that has 100 branches in the current location. It was the least performer among 100 but Yu made it top. Despite his proved capability in business, he quit due to discordance in the business directions. “I think growing together is the key to success. Open and transparent management build trust between the management and the partners. We have experience and knowhow in recipe, interior and management and we are ready to launch a franchise business.”
