<Interview / Global Artist Son Oe-kyung>

Vitality Comes Through Dots And Spirit
Buddhist Philosophy And Training Perfect Art Works

Artist Son Oe-kyung (nickname Taehuh) is better known overseas for her use of dots. She won the special prize at 2010 2nd Exhibition of Korea Watercolor Grand Competition and listed her name in Asia Contemporary Art Show. Her works were displayed in World Art Dubai and are scheduled to be exhibited at The Luovre, France this month. <Power Power> met Son.

The Works of Energy And Vitality

The exhibition goers, whether in Korea or overseas, love Son’s works for energy and vitality they radiate. Her famous Dot Series, for example, crystallized man with millions of dots and impressive colors to create the energy and vitality of the same and different spectrum of our lives.

Son focuses on expressing life and philosophy. The process of creating a work, Son says, is like a process of understanding the relation that starts from me to nature to universe.

Her works recently have attracted a great attention from media home and abroad and she participated in Asia Contemporary Art Show held last March in Hong Kong by representing Korea before participating in World Art Dubai soon after. She received an explosive response from both exhibitions.

Son’s other work ‘Line’, a thread roll made of five cardinal colored threads with spinning wheel to emphasize Korean colors, also attracted a great attention and Son has been chosen as the sole Korean to exhibit the works at The Luovre (SNBA Invitational Exhibition) November this year. She also is scheduled to participate in Le Salon (GRAND PALAIS), Paris February next year.

Taehuhrim, The Training Site of Buddhist Philosophy

Son is a Buddhist and Buddha’s teaching is her spiritual foundation for her works. She spent a considerable amount of time for emptying her mind through spiritual training. “Introspection and action, she says, are more important when creating an art work.”

There is a Korean house named Taehuhrim in a remote village in Chilgok County. Taehuh is nickname of Sohn and the house is a place where she, and other people, comes to visit to contemplate. “Buddha asked Ananda how he sees Kita Forest. I was inspired by this and named the house Taehuhrim.”

Son’s contemplation in the house is part of process of creating art works. ‘From The Dots’, for example, is created based on 8 Buddhist Training Principle: right point of view, right speech, right action, right attitude, right endeavor, right passion and right concentration of mind.

8 Buddhist Training Principle is the concrete way to cut the burdens of life. This is called ‘middle course’ and it leads one to the state of nirvana which cannot be reached otherwise by either pleasure or training.

“Emptying My Mind Leads Me To The Peak”
Son trained herself at Taehuhrim for 10 years.

“I never intended to sell my works or solely focused on creating works. Art works for me is an effort to expose true me to Buddha who trained himself for 6 years.”

Art works for Son mean training. But she focuses on her work intensively for more than 10 hours once the idea is set. And this intensity is the source of the energy and vitality of the work.

People who visit Taehuhrim also find a piece of comfort. They can do Zen meditation and contemplation and can find something scared from complex life, they said. “Through this spiritual training, I find peace in my mind and greet visitors with comfort.”

Everybody can create an art work but putting one’s value of life into practice is not easy. “Building up right spiritual value is more important than giving the first stroke onto the canvas. Therefore, organizing one’s life and emptying one’s mind actually are equal to putting the peak on the canvas.”

“I Hope People Find Happiness From My Works”

Meanwhile, Son has been doing volunteer works in Buddhist countries including Sri Lanka. “Good art works come from good spirit and mind and good spirit and mind must be put into practice to prove their value. I want to create works that contain these two elements.”

“Meet people like you meet them for the first time and always think about ways for all of us to live together in harmony. Also, work hard and help people in need.”

Son’s generous heart and depth in art, <Power Korea> thinks, will continue to deliver a piece of comfort and happiness to people.
