Korea’s Finding OF The Green Gem ‘Diopside’
Towcap (CEO Kim Lee-nam)
Diopside is a rare semi gem with greenish tinge that has limited sources of origin and emits strong far-infrared radiation. We cannot find any source of origin in Japan and China but recent finding of the gem in Korean soil is attracting attention from media. <Power Korea> met CEO Kim LEE-nam of Towcap.
Diopside Used For Golden Crowns
Diopside means ‘two figures’ in Greek and we can find sources of the gem in the limited number of countries such as US, Guatemala, Russia and Brazil. It is called as ‘health gem’ or ‘healing gem’ due to a variety of minerals it contains and emitting far-infrared radiation. We can also find a trace of the gem in Korea from the golden ornaments excavated in Cheonmachong, Gold Crown Tomb and Royal Tomb of King Michu of Silla in Gyeongju. Many scholars actually tried to find the gem in the Korean soil before but failed to find quality rough gemstones to be commercially viable. The breakthrough, however, came from Kim. He established Towcap in 2008 that produced double bolt cap for decorating industrial plants. The company was recognized for cutting edge technology and Kim obtained related patents in Korea, China, Russia, Singapore and Australia. The double bolt cap is not broken even when in constricted or stiffed states caused by the sunlight and its buffer effect in collision keeps its rigidity that will last more than 10 years. Kim recently has signed a business agreement with a Chinese company this month to supply the product to the Electricity Board in Jilin, China. Towcap also is a partner company of POSCO and KEPCO KPS and the company received the ministerial prize from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy at 2013 Korea Patent Exhibition. Kim has had personal interest in finding gemstones for a long time. And one day when opening up a silica mine, he found what seemed like nephrite by chance. He asked an expert opinion and heard the news from the Gemological Institute of America in April 2014 confirming it was diopside. It was the moment for Kim to declare that Korea now belonged to the aforementioned group of countries with sources of the gem.
Healing Gem
Some call it ‘stone from the heaven’ and others ‘stone that protect us from bad luck’. The diopside found in Korea, however, has different elements and property from others region’s which Kim calls it ‘Korean type diopside’. Its color is similar to Goryeo celadon and strong far-infrared radiation encourages people to call it as ‘healing gem’.
“I’ve saved 500 tons of rough diopside gemstones in the warehouse, Kim said, and I will soon start supplying the gem to the markets both home and abroad. I hope that talented jewelers and jewel designers use their expertise to the maximum level to spread the unique beauty of Korean diopside.”
In line of spreading Korean diopside to the world, Kim is planning to participate in various related exhibitions home and abroad starting from ¡¸2016 Handmade Fair¡¹held at COEX on 17-20 November this year with his ‘Korean Diopside Energy Ball. Meanwhile, Kim is designing and producing diopside health bracelet and necklace as well as luxury china plates inspired by ‘Faience’, the French china made of diopside powder, to diversify the product line. Kim is pushing forward all these enterprises with pride in spreading the beauty of unique Korean gems to the world. <Power Korea> wishes Kim a great success.
