While an explosive number of coffee franchises in Korea are competing over price and size of the coffee, there arise from coffee lovers the demand for premium coffee regardless its price and size. <Power Korea> met CEO Seo Myeong-suk of Daewang International famous for ‘Specialty Coffee’.

Picky Hands for Original Coffee Beans Boosts ‘Specialty Coffee’ Fever
The title ‘Specialty Coffee’ is given by SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America) to the top 7% coffee beans which scored more than 80 points on taste, aroma and freshness. They must be go through strict screening in terms of their origin, climate, cultivation method, harvesting method and time, processing method and distribution process to be called Specialty Coffee. The Americans call Specialty Coffee as The Third Wave and the market is showing an annual 10% growth. Seo established Daewang International in March 2014 and has supplied Specialty Coffee through direct dealings with the local producers. Seo obtained CQI (Coffee Quality Institute)’s Q Grader (a professional accreditation system for general knowledge exam and result on Specialty Coffee). He has tested himself 700 coffee bean samples by touring local coffee farms and selected the best coffee beans for direct dealing. The selected coffee beans of Ethiopia and Guatemala are packed by ‘Nitrogen Substitution-Vacuum Packaging’, developed by Daewang International, to be delivered fresh to Korea and stored ‘Constant Temperature and Moisture Free Room’ per 10kg unit to maintain the original taste and aroma. CEO Seo currently supplies the beans to 1,000 roasting cafes nationwide including Grand Hyatt Hotel and it accounted 500 tons in 2015. 

Growing Together
Daewang International is the sole importer of Ethiopia Guji Highland and secured a large number of delivery accounts in Brazil, Columbia and Guatemala. In order to promote co-growth with local farmers, CEO Seo made donation on a regular basis and carried out building a research center. 

“We buy, explains Seo, quality coffee beans at reasonable price from the farmers and supply them in good price so that whole of our businesses can grow together in fairness.” 

CEO Seo currently is running two coffee shops in Daegu;
Suseong Pond and Dongsungro. 

“Daewang International, since establishment, has never stopped R&D for securing and supplying the best coffee beans available and we are determined to take the initiative in leading the Specialty Coffee market in Korea.” 

As part of this effort, Seo regularly holds free coffee training and seminars with professional baristars. When asked about his future plan, “I’m planning to install a climate data collection device in the local farms I’m dealing with to find out the optimum cultivation conditions for growing coffee beans.”
