[Art] Artist Sung Lac-ju
Timeless abstract art in diverse colors
Artists express themselves in various forms of art works. But an art work with the elements of delicate disposition, abstraction and multi-layered, all on one canvas probably is unparalleled in terms of its uniqueness. Artist Sung Lac-ju, in this respect, is a representative Korean artist in the way she expresses her inner world through diverse colors and dispositions. <Power Korea> met her.
Connecting oriental beauty to western’s
Sung’s works have power that overwhelms viewers. The bold use of primary color and the drift and loose abstract images are an important metaphor that expresses the artist’s unconsciousness which Sung calls ‘an expression of hope in our hearts’. She uses abstract and non-figurative to tell about many dreams, hopes and wills and we can see, for this reason, the diverse spectrums of beauty in her works. She catches the beauty spreading in the moment and pours her timeless sentiments onto canvas. This might be the reason we can see oriental elements in her western paintings.
“My works, Sung explains, are all about hope of the future and memories of the past. And I try to deliver this through various forms and elements that have passed down for a long time in the art history.”
Making to Grand Art Exhibition of Korea
Sung was influenced from his art work collector father. He spent some time in prison for being involved in independence movement in the Japanese colonial ear and his older brother studied at Jeil Gobo and graduated Waseda University. Sung studied painting at Bando Gallery when she turned twenty and is known today as a living witness of the history Korean art gallery. She started with dye, silk and embroidery for art and one of her embroidery works was selected for Grand Art Exhibition of Korea when she was studying home economics at Dongduk Women's University: she was the first student who made it. Her art world, however, changed when she went to an exhibition in Insa-dong which displayed abstracts.
“It was like a new world opens its door within me. The combination of space and colors was a completely new experience for me and it was the turning point of my life.”
Love calls from overseas for exhibition
The abundant colors and image layout in Sung’s works are created in unconsciously catching the moment’s inspiration. Every moment is a creation of new work and the result often betrays her initial intension. But this process, she says, actually is the method to let the past meet the future. Sung so far has hung her works five times at Grand Art Exhibition of Korea and won the grand prize at Hansung Baekje Art Exhibition. She has held fifteen solo exhibitions and was offered an exhibition from Hong Kong (2014), Singapore, LA and Miami, US which were highly acclaimed. Sung currently is a member of the Korea Fine Arts Association, the Songpa Artists Association, the Fulltime Artists Association and Ouoe, and has worked as the director of New Art, a consultant of the Gwanak Arts Association and an invitational artist of Grand Art Exhibition of Korea. Some of her works were also appeared on TV dramas: Wonderful Mama, Your Woman, and The Room of Two Women (SBS 2013).
“As a senior artist, I want to find more talented young artists in order to promote art in Korea in cooperation with the Korea Fine Arts Association, adding that, I hope my works can give a piece of joy and hope to many people.”
