[Interview] Artist Sooji Kim
Colorful petals flying onto canvas

“At one point, I had this feeling that the sprinkles of colors on the canvas surging like petals flying away. From green to blossom to fly back to nature, I just reach out my hands to bowl the petals and hold them onto canvas. Flowers blossom by love and the scent invites insects and it was beautiful. Life and death, I believe, is all about spring up and away and through this I find a channel to communicate with the world. I call this freedom. It is a long way but the longer the shorter.”
– artist’s note –

The freedom that blossomed onto canvas from pain
Kim paints full-blown flowers. She expresses her inner world of freedom undeterred by any rule or composition. We can see ladybugs and butterflies seating with ease among colorful multitudinous petals. If we can move one step closer to the work, petals can be seen rather imaginative than real.
“I expressed our chaotic and empty psychological status with colors, lines and figures to talk about our emotions such as joy and sorrow. Each petal is eager to show off their existence with splendid color and shape, but in hidden sadness, until the time for them to fall and I just wanted to demonstrate it.”

Art critic Namsu Kim explains “Kim is a truthful artist in terms of exerting her effort in reaching to a state of enlightenment. She plays, and also sublimates, her language in variation through constriction and reduction and this of her effort contains full of conviction for a change.” The ladybugs and butterflies in the works can be seen as herself: a weak and insignificant existence. But this might indicate ‘a channel to the true freedom’ Kim wishes to share with viewers.

Eight times solo exhibitions in Japan
Kim was born fraternal twins in Yeosu. She grew up feeling unfairly treated in terms of love and recognition given more to her twin brother. Using her talent in art, for this reason, was the only way to appeal her presence. When grown up, she worked for Samsung Electronics for a while but the Korean art course at the staff welfare center resumed her passion in art and she started painting in earnest from then on. She has held 18 solo exhibitions so far and the first exhibition remains as an unforgettable memory: She came to know Green Gallery when traveling in Japan for inspiration. The gallery holds exhibitions after auditioning the artists and it was such a challenge for Kim, who did not have a solo exhibition before and also being a foreigner, to make it. But the gallery recognized her 3 years of passion and exertion in preparation and she eventually had her first ever solo exhibition with 70 of her works. Since then, Kim has held or participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions home and abroad and some of her works were used for the cover of the essay ‘Still Staying There’ written by Gyeonghee Gong and ‘Rhetoric for Police Investigation’ written by Hwasu Kim.

“I went through many turns and twists but I sublimated my inner conflict and fight against loneliness onto canvas. This might be the source of my success today.”

Teaching art to local residents
Recently, Kim is using brighter and more gorgeous colors for her works. Her works are now widely recognized in the art world and Kim has become one of sought after artists from many art lovers. Meanwhile, Kim is a member of the Korean Find Arts Association and the Songpa Artists Association. She has been teaching art to local residents at Songpa Women’s Culture Center for three years including 1:1 lesson.

“We are eager to seek freedom and truth through wish and hope and every hardship and suffering. This desire might be no different from those insignificant insects in the way to survive and live.”
