Artist Jeon Mi-hwa
Oil painting and installation art as channels to communicate with people

From water color and oil to installation, artist Jeon has poured her instant creative energy into her works for the last 40 years. She finds objects in daily life and feels an utter joy and satisfaction during the creative process. Art for Jeon is the best gift she can give to herself and the best tool to communicate with people.

Vitality of nature delivered on canvas
Jeon obtained both bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in western painting at Sejong University. She has developed her style through water color and oil painting during her 30 years of career as an artist and delivered vitality of nature into her works. ‘Happy Song’, for example, closes up flowers and grasses and ‘Mysterious Valley’, one of her main works, on the other hand, is filled with green color harmonized with blue. One might feel a state of enlightenment by appreciating these two colors. Her sensitive touch of brush and discerning eye are also well delivered through her other works ‘Autumn Impression’ (1988), ‘Sixth Sense’ (1989, JoongAng Fine Arts Prize), and ‘Snail Princess’ (1989, The Seoul Shinmun building). But she widened her art world through installation.

Arousing new sensitivities through installation
Jeon uses common objects we can see in our daily life to express her feeling of joy and happiness through installation. It happened by a chance when she started to collect abandoned furniture from disused apartment nearby her studio. She created her unique style with common objects mixed with cloth to deliver simplicity which is far from the symbolism of modern art. She dislikes complicatedness but likes to improvise the objects with her moment’s feeling. “I want to create works that can make people happy and I often find inspiration from great literary works. One of my works, for example, is actually titled as ‘The Moon and Six Pence’, the novel written by Somerset Maugham. Other works such as ‘Eh-hem Series’, made of various objects including kettle and watch, and ‘Chamber Music Series’ which is enhanced with the position of objects, are also influenced by literary works” explains Jeon.

Sharing the joy of creation with viewers
Jeon says that ‘joy’ is the word that has driven her passion in art for the last 40 years. “I feel an utter joy and satisfaction when I focus on my work. I even forget myself during this creative process. I don’t much care about what meaning and message I plan to deliver through my works but I want to share this creative energy and feeling with viewers. I also don’t think too much about the theme of a work but just try to pour my moment’s feeling into each work.” Jeon won a prize with her work ‘Autumn Impression’ in 1988 and participated in numerous group and international exhibitions. With coming solo exhibition next year, Jeon keeps herself busy at the moment. “I will keep finding objects for my works from daily life and my coming solo exhibition will also be about sharing my joy of creation with viewers.”
