Delivering happy scent of flowers to you
Bokhee Ryu, CEO of Woosong Florist / President of Busan Flower Cluster Association

One of the most frequently used words by people today is ‘healing’. We use this magic word to release our stress and to recharge energy to carry on our lives. We get ‘healing’ from various things and quite recently an increasing number of people are getting it from flowers. They decorate home or office with flowers and some of them even take a florist course. <Power Korea> met CEO Bokhee Ryu of Woosong Florist.

Fostering talented florists
If people used flowers for proposal, wedding and graduation ceremonies and events in the past, people today use them for various reasons including interior. Naturally, there is an increasing market demand for florists. Woosong Florist is second to none in terms of fostering talented florists and it runs various certificate courses including the Netherlands’ D.F.A/A.D.F.A (national certificate) as well as Germany’s national florist courses. These courses are recognized as advanced courses and they are highly recommended for those who wish to be a florist in a faster yet professional way. “Flowers not only give pleasant scent of nature to people but also they have decorative value today. It is florist’s job to display right flowers at the right place according to its purpose and it is our job to foster talented florists. For this, we regularly invite florists active in Europe to give lectures on market trend and up to date techniques as well as design concept so that our students can grow to be global florists” explains Ryu.

Serving as President of BFCA
Ryu has walked a single path as a florist and has exerted her effort in development of flower design in Korea for the last 40 years. Since she stepped into the flower industry in 1976 until today, Ryu has never let go of flowers from her hands. She obtained both master’s degree and PhD and used her knowledge to open a related course at university. She also obtained a German florist meister certificate and the Natherlands’ D.F.A/A.D.F.A certificates, took a course at Montfort University UK, Floral Art School US and a table decoration course at Paris Florist College. Ryu currently is serving as an academic adviser of flower design at Pusan National University School of Continuing Education, the first vice president of the Busan Florists Association of the Federation of Artistic & Cultural Organization of Korea, the secretary director of the Hyundae Flower Association. She won the grand prize twice in a row in 2013 and 2014 at the Korea Flower Design Show and co-held, with prof. Erik Van Heijst of STOAS (flower university in the Netherlands), Woosong Flower Sculpture Exhibition celebrating the 70th anniversary of establishing the Korean National Police at Busan Metropolitan Police Agency in October last year. She also held a solo exhibition celebrating the 70th anniversary of Busan National University in May this year, and another one the next month in the Korea Landscape & Gardening Expo. This led her to serve as the second president of the BFCA (Busan Flower Cluster Association). It was established in 2014 and has contributed to raising the value of the flower industry in Korea, especially Busan which is regarded as the center of the industry, through training, festivals and policy suggestions. “We have organized the best flower design contests, exhibitions and festivals in order to raise public interest in flower design. As the president of the BFCA, I will keep providing my 40 years of knowhow and experience to activate the industry.” In fact, the flower industry in Korea at the moment is in the downside. So the more training, festivals and contests the more opportunities for the industry to grow. According to a research, staying near flowers increases secretion of serotonin, known as ‘happy hormone’, by 40% while decreases cortisol, ‘stress hormone’. Why don’t you buy a flower today to get a healing or to give someone as a gift if you haven’t done it for a while?
