<Feature story for Youngcheon city>
Ha Hyung-tae, president of Korea Wine
Vincoree, a wine representing Korea

The wine industry Youngcheon reared to increase the income of grape farms has proved to be the No. 1 in the nation beating Youngdong (Choongbuk) and Moojoo (Jeonbuk) after a dozen years. With domestically increasing interest in wine, Korea-made wine is also drawing popularity. Products from Korea Wine Inc. were selected for the World Championship in Athletics (banquet), Gyeongju World Culture Expo (official toast) and the World Water Forum (dinner for reception), representing Korea for the world. We met president Ha Hyung-tae of Korea Wine Inc. to hear about the current status of the company.

Korea wine Vincoree made from our nature
Vincoree, a brand of Korea Wine, is a compound word for Vin (wine) and Coree (Korea), meaning Korea-made wine. The company is located at Youngcheon city, which is becoming the mecca of domestic wine, rearing diverse wineries for village, farm, factory and education with the help of its fine climatic conditions. The city has so little rainfall and abundant daylight that it once had an astronomical observatory. Though it is an inland region, it has over a thousand reservoirs and these natural conditions allow maintaining moisture properly, making the city the best location for growing grapes. With such optimum conditions there are numerous wineries in Youngcheon but here Korea Wine Inc. is the place that produces by far the best wines. The company is currently spreading the unique taste of Korea-made wine to domestic consumers by marketing Vincoree red wine, white wine, rose wine, ice wine and Star berry mulberry wine.

“Currently, Korea-made wine accounts for only 3% in the Korean wine market. The remaining distributors of foreign wine don’t welcome the manufacture of Korean wine. They don’t want to give up the wine market by spreading words that ‘The species of Korean grapes are not good,’ or ‘Korean wines are inferior for taste.’ Even in such poor conditions, Korea Wine Inc. is putting up a good fight for the honor of domestic wine.”

Korean Wine also produces 15 kinds of quality grapes for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling and Vidal, and runs various tour and experience programs which contribute to activating the 6th industry in the region.
To promote Korean wine Vincoree to the world!

The grapes which Korea Wine is currently growing are the species improved in Japan. The company is manufacturing wines using MBA (Meoru wine) species developed for combined use of fresh fruit and processing and this is most suitable for making wine among the current species growing domestically because of its high sugar content and dark colors. President Ha explained, “As good taste starts with good ingredients for any food, good wine starts with good grapes. We are, by selection, growing the species of grape suitable for brewing in a place with good climatic and soil conditions. We make wine by harvesting the grapes just when they give our wanted sugar content and acidity.”

President Ha, recognized as the pioneer of domestic wine industry, was working in 1982 at the head office of Doosan Liquor. With the rising social interest in wine industry, he applied for Gyeongsan Majuang factory to build practical experiences and took responsibility for developing grape species and evaluation on a company-run farm. Then, being fascinated with wine, he made trips to and visited for study all Europe including France, the home to wine, New Zealand and Australia to acquire diverse advanced wine-making techniques. Based on this, Korea Wine succeeded in developing ‘Ice Wine’ for the first time in the nation causing a great sensation. Ice Wine, first produced in Franconia, Germany, is a sugary and sweet dessert wine made by squeezing before thawing after picking grapes frozen in the vineyard. As the moisture in the grape is frozen, its juice has been concentrated with good flavor, high sugar content and acidity. However, the work process is very difficult because one has to make it using the ice with severe cold after grapes have matured. On the other hand, Vincoree Ice Wine is receiving the reputation that the harmony of admirable sugariness, sharp acidity and coolness in sweetness leaves a lingering aftertaste. Especially in 2011, Vincoree Ice Wine was entered into agreement for delivery to 2,000 marts in the military bases under the Ministry of National Defense. Besides, Vincoree Ice Wine was solely selected in the fierce competition among 22 nationwide fruit wines which applied to Korean Army Welfare Corps for delivery to military units. It was also selected for ‘2011 Gyeongju World Culture Expo’ and dinner at VIP room in ‘2011 Daegu World Championship in Athletics with high accolades.

Star berry mulberry wine appreciated by the world people
Korea Wine launched Star berry mulberry wine in 2011 through studies on wine using mulberry in an effort to find a niche market for the existing Meoru wine. “After the launch, Star berry mulberry wine by Vincoree won an explosive response to form such a mania class as to go into large discount stores in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Gumi, etc.” Star berry mulberry wine, for which production and marketing are made by Korea Wine and Daegu Catholic University Locally Connected Industry Center in consortium, manufactured legitimate wine by fermenting mulberry gourd, a treasury of functional substances, and mulberry juice solutions obtained from fresh mulberry effectively in many steps, differentiating itself from the existing mulberry wine in taste, aroma and quality such as functionality. President Ha explained, “Mulberry wine contains Resveratrol, dehydroquercetin and rutin with components against cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, inflammation and aging.”

In 2013, it was presented at a reception for ‘the 7th World Water Forum Kickoff Meeting’ attended by Jung Hong-won (Korean Premier), Benedito Braga (chairman), politicians and water specialists from many countries. Especially, Henry Begore, president of France Water Association, commented, “Mulberry wine of Korea Wine has attraction because it is appetizing,” suggesting the possibility of its advance into the global market.

“Recently, it is not easy to find a niche market because there are so many low-priced imported wines, but we are sure about the future growth of Korean-style wine combined with our own characteristics. Since Meoru grape produced at Youngchon with a large temperature difference between day and night and by season contains a high sugar content, it has sufficient viability as high-class wine ingredients.” With such confidence, president Ha Hyung-tae of Korea Wine is making efforts to work on wine for life and make the city of Youngcheon domestic mecca of the best wine which produces the world’s best wine. It is expected that his dream about Korea Wine will come true by the products agreeable to the palate of the world people.
