Artificial intelligence treatment raises accuracy of medical diagnosis
Kim Han-suk, Director of Seoul Yujunggap Surgery / Director of OBS Korea Medical Research Institute
90% of Korean women have dense breasts

It is reported that 25.2% of women in the world once have a breast cancer in their life. For many Korean women today, late marriage and a decrease in breast-feeding are causing an increase in number of women having a breast cancer. It is also notable that women aged over 60 commonly have the cancer in the west while women aged around the 30s and 40s happen to have it in Korea. Despite the Korean government’s ‘National Cancer Screening’ for women aged over 40, the rate stays only around 70% and lack of public recognition also adds difficulty in early diagnosis. To raise public awareness, Director Kim Han-suk of Seoul Yujunggap Surgery rolled up his sleeves and is giving effective treatment by introducing artificial intelligence treatment system for accuracy of early diagnosis. “Like prostate cancer commonly occurs in men, breasts cancer is much affected by hormone. Many women today experience premature period and late menopause and it extends the period in which they are exposed to hormone. Low birth rate also reduces the chances of taking a hormone break during pregnancy and breast feeding” explains Kim. But above all, Kim continues, the fact that 9 out of 10 Korean women having dense breasts (fibro glandular tissue) plays a significant role to make mammography far more difficult in terms of its accuracy. “Survival rate from breast cancer if found early is over 90%. Ultrasound, for this reason, is more preferable than mammography for accurate diagnosis but relatively expensive cost makes many women to hesitate for the screening” says Kim. To encourage those hesitators, Seoul Yujunggap Surgery held a promotional event ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Wear Pink Ribbon with Lamiran –‘ last July by giving free ultrasound for those who visited Billy Angel, a desert café.

Accurate biopsy for breast implants, benign breast tumor and liposuction
Kim explains about the importance of biopsy by saying “Having an accurate biopsy for breast implants, benign breast tumor and liposuction is very important. I observed that many of those who have had breast implants tend to ignore biopsy but they are highly advised to test their breasts before and after the implants. It is absolutely important to keep an eye on any change occurring to their breasts after the surgery and unnecessary removal or suction of benign breast tumor also must be avoided except when necessary. All in all, patients are highly advised to go through BIRADs score with the responsible doctor.”

Big data-driven artificial intelligence treatment solutions to change our life
Seoul Yujunggap Surgery is proud to boast its artificial intelligence treatment system as it has significantly improved accuracy of diagnosis which normally depended on doctor’s subjective opinion in large part. The system was approved by the FDA and it uses ‘Computer aided diagnosis’ to draw quantitative results through vast amount of medical data accumulated in the system. Director Kim applied the algorithm of artificial intelligence, gained while he was working for GE and Samsung Electronics, to the system. Kim also introduced a bladeless remover that carries out the surgery with less bleeding which is ideal especially for dense breasts. Meanwhile, Kim is serving as Director of OBS Korea Medical Research Institute through which he promotes advancement of Korean medical technology and solutions by taking the advantages of Deep Learning, Big Data and IoT Cloud. “Medical information in today’s society is regarded as very important. The analytic ability of big data and the algorithm of artificial intelligence in particular are the two core technologies that can change the map of our healthy lives. They will let doctors know about each patient’s medical record and status more efficiently and effectively so that a customized medical treatment can be given in speed. For this reason, ‘medical information technology’ has a huge potential to grow and it is worth a research and investment” predicts Kim. As part of his effort to raise both public and industry awareness in the field, Kim recently held a medical technology conference focused on artificial intelligence and building a big data platform and exchanged opinions of participated government officials and industry specialists. “Industry-academic cooperation is a must for advancement of Korea’s medical big data and artificial intelligence technologies and we will, in our part, keep doing our very best to make it happen” determined Kim. <Power Korea> sends a message of support to Kim.
