[Sancheong Country Special] Director Yun Chul-ho of Jirisan Insect Research Institute
“Insects are our future food”

According to a UN report, 7.3 billion people are living on earth at the moment. The number will crease to 8.5 billion by 2030 and 11.3 billion by 2100. This means that we need more food and accommodation. The report has inspired a number of people and businesses to find food resources from insects. <Power Korea> met Director Yun Chul-ho of Jirisan Insect Research Institute and heard about our future food.

“Insects are our future food”
Established in 2012, Jirisan Insect Research Institute has grown to be one of the best insect research institutes in South Gyeongsang Province. Director Yun says “1,900 kinds of insects are known to be edible and 2 billion people in the world eat them as food according a report. The UN also pointed out insects as our healthy future food.” Yun actually noticed the fact long time ago and personally started researches from 1980. He currently grow beetles and stag beetles for educational purposes and 14 kinds of insects including grasshopper (pxya japonica), darkling beetle, white-spotted flower chaffer beetle, scorpion and centipede for food at the institute. “We need 13kg of grains to produce 1kg of beef but only 2.1kg of grans for insects to supply protein per 1kg production. Also, ruminants release 47kg of methane, same as 4.2 cows and a vehicle release green-house gases. A research said that 18% of global warming ascribes to raising cows. But, we don’t need to worry about all of these when it comes to insects” explains Yun. Insects are also space-efficient and fodder-efficient in terms of gaining protein when compared to cows and pigs. Insects are cold-blooded animals and they have high ratios of turning the fodder into protein. A grasshopper, for example, can produce the same amount of protein by 1/12 of the fodder needed for a cow and half the fodder for a pig. In terms of releasing methane and green-house gases, insects release 100 times less than cows and pigs. All of these facts prove that growing insects are a more sustainable solution to solve the fool problem of the world. As part of this effort, Yun is using edible insects to make cookies and energy bars. Recently, Yun, with Mayor Huh Ki-do, held a promotional event in Australia and New Zealand from 10-16 last month in order to spread excellent quality of the food produced in the county. Yun currently is running a farm, learning center, processing room, low temperature storage and insect rooms for especially children and also providing for local farmers training on insect growing techniques and the vision of the industry. When asked about future plan, Yun said “I ambitious to grow the institute as one of the best insect institutes in Korea. As part of the effort, I’m planning to introduce a night tour program so that visitors can see, touch and eat the insects at night as well as the day.”
