CEO Kang Tae-wook
of Jirisan New Hope Sanghwang Mushroom (Phellinus linteus)
Sanghwang mushroom, a god’s gift

Sanghwang mushroom is known to have strong anticancer effect. It has been widely used in folk medicine for treating cancer and the β-glucan in the mushroom in particular is known to prevent cancer by strengthening immune cells. <Power Korea> met CEO Kang Tae-wook of Jirisan New Hope Sanghwang Mushroom and heard about its effect.

Sanghwang mushroom, a god’s gift
Sanghwang mushroom grow on decades grew up dead trees. Ancient medical books say that ‘it contains no poison but controls it’ and ‘it has sweet taste’. CEO Kang Tae-wook of Jirisan New Hope Sanghwang Mushroom (Phellinus linteus) says “It has anticancer substance and helps digestion and prevents adult diseases. There is even a myth that the deads are alive when eaten the mushroom grew on mulberry. Donguibogam (Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine) also records that the sanghwang mushroom porridge mixed with rice is good for stroke, bloody discharge and tumors and another book says that it is good for stomachache and the five viscera. It contains protein-bound polysaccharide, amino acid, hydrocarbon, fatty acid, enzyme, K, Ca and vitamin B. The β-glucan in the mushroom in particular prevents cancer by strengthening immune cells.” Sanghwang mushroom’s polysaccharide is also reported to deter cancer cell or encourage the cells to kill themselves. The best way to take sanghwang mushroom is to boil and drink. The color of water turns to yellowish when boiled and it has no taste and smell.

Growing sanghwang mushroom like my family eat it
CEO Kang started to grow sanghwang mushroom in Jinju from 2003 with his family and moved its base to current Saengbiryang-myeon, Sancheong County. Kang was offered a place from several companies when graduated from university but he decided to succeed his father’s farming. “We have to retire one day from a company but there’s no retirement from farming. Farming I think is the most honest labor in the world because it gives back exactly the amount that the farmer has shed the sweat. So I don’t regret of my choice for being a farmer.” Kang added that there are foreign mushrooms similar to sanghwang mushroom circulating in the market and consumers need to be cautious. Those similar mushrooms contain poison and/or give side effect. “We grow sanghwang mushroom with eco-friendly agricultural methods. But we put our honest heart and real sweat more into the cultivation than the methods and we are proud of it.” <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
