Artist Shin Gyeong-mi (nickname: Haejeon)
Shin rediscovers the beauty of Korean paintings

Solo exhibition in September to show the essence of Shin’s art works
20 years of single path in art and strong presence in Daeju art world

Artist Shin Gyeong-mi has walked a single path as an artist for the last 20 years and has created her unique art world. Shin started to show her artistic talent from her early age and majored in western painting at Honam University School of Art. She felt blessed that she could carry on her passion in art at a university and it was like a god’s gift. She moved to Daegu following her husband soon after marriage and started to build her fame gradually with phoenix series. She secured a 2,470 square meter studio on the foot of Palgong Mountain in her late 30s. With a 500 year old garden zinnia tree and beautiful landscape surrounding the studio, it has become one of main attractions in Daegu through words spreading mouth to mouth. On demand of people, Shin remodeled the studio with a performing stage and a tea area. Shin performed her salpuri (exorcism) and chang (Korean narrative song) at the studio and also donated her talent to Open Disabled Association.

Phoenix and Fish Woman series attract attention
The process of painting for Shin is a process of training and finding her ego. “I sometimes focus whole my passion and energy on one work for days without moving. Every other thing became nothing and I even felt removing all of my hair which I kept as a tool to show my beauty” looked back Shin. Shin’s most famous work probably is the phoenix series. Though she majored in western painting, her attachment to oriental objects and colors, commonly appeared through Buddhist art, is so great. The fives colors – yellow, blue, white, red and black – and dynamic lines of oriental paintings in Shin’s works, phoenix in particular, are the sauces of her uniqueness. “Phoenix is a dignified bird that does not hurt insects and grasses. I was drawn to the fact that it has a connection to my wish to keep valuable things in life.” Shin also put her ideal image of a woman, who gradually gains wisdom of life with her eyes wide open for 24 hours, in her other representative work Fish Woman.

Shin’s performance attracts attention in Dresden
“Family and friends are my great supporters”

Shin has participated in numerous group and invitational exhibitions including View of Modern Art 2008, Nude Crouquis 2009 by Danwon Art Museum and Living Korea Festival 2014 in Dresden, Germany, in which she exploded her artistic energy through her phoenix painting performance in white Korean dress, disguised as a man, under the title ‘Play Arirang’. She also held solo exhibitions at Chosun Ilbo Art Gallery, Seoul and G Gallery, Daegu. Shin also gave a performance at the King Munmu Memorial Art Festival held in Gyeongju on 6 August. She reinterpreted the legend of the king, who ascended to the sky as a dragon on the third day of his death, into her performance. Meanwhile, Shin has a deep gratitude to her family and friends for they always have been her great supporters. Her mother in particular is like a lamp in the darkness for her. “She encouraged me to walk my way even in bad times and gave her unsparing support for me. I also would like to show my special thanks to my husband who always gave me warm words and compliments.”

Holding solo exhibition in September
Shin pushes forward a big project

“My skin sometimes gets troubled due to strong toxin of oil paints. I once had to take a medicine for nearly a month because of it. Also, my works get lukewarm response from the art world in Korea due to my oriental elements on western oil materials. But I don’t worry about tomorrow because I walk my way for today.” Currently, Shin is preparing for a big project: drawing 2,016 phoenixes alongside creating 100 works sized 160 x 130cm and 500 works sized 72.7 x 60.6cm. But for now, she keeps herself busy holding a solo exhibition right this month. Why don’t you have a nice day out in this autumn by visiting the exhibition?
