Go Gwang-hyeok, Seogak Carver of Dalmoemeulgeul Workshop
Go delivers traditional charm of ‘seogak’ to people in theory and practice
Seogak carves poems, calligraphic letters and pictures on wooden blocks

We can find the roots of ‘seogak’ from ancient times. It is closely related to human’s tendency to leave what was happening in the time they lived. The petroglyphs in Daegok-ri in Ulsan, the Great Dharani Sutra of Immaculate and Pure Light, Tripitaka Koreana and numerous signboards hanging on doors in old palaces and temples are all good examples of ‘seogak’. And the charm of seogak can be found at the fact that you can enjoy poems, calligraphic letters and pictures carved on wooden or stone blocks. When asked about seogak, Go Gwang-hyeok, Seogak Carver of Dalmoemeulgeul Workshop in Boryeong City said “It is to leave a trace of one’s thought”. Seogak is categorized into traditional and modern seogak which also is subdivided based on the style of calligraphic letters and engraving as well as materials according to Go. Quite recently, there is an increase in number of people who try to learn the art as a hobby for they find a sense of achievement apart from their own profession.

Go learns from his seogak teacher Jinsan
14 years of single path as a seogak carver

Go majored in mechanical engineering and worked in the related industry for many years before running his own factory. But he quit the profession when he hurt one of his fingers in 1998 and traveled down to Boryeong City to cheer himself up in nature in 2000. As destiny often happens as such, Go met a seogak master Jinsan (Jung Ji-wan) in 2002 and threw himself in this new profession. Jinsan is famous for his participation in recovering the signboard in Shingye Temple in Mount Kumgang. Go worked day and night to learn necessary skills of seogak from Jinsan for 3 years. His passion in seogak was so great that he not even held a solo exhibition except a few group and invitational exhibitions in order to wholly focus on creating more of his works and giving lectures to students which he has done for the last 10 years.

Creating a unique style with new ideas and compositions
Go helps students develop their own styles

Go try to avoid splendid colors but moderate and agreeable. Simplicity also is the important element in order not to make the work crude or crowded. “Everybody can learn how to use a carving knife without much difficulty. The important things, however, are one’s own ideas and compositions. Many students tend to focus on carving technique itself so I constantly remind them of this elements” explains Go. Go’s students are people from all walks of life such as housewives, teachers and famers. “I once taught my students different styles of carving methods for two months in Seocheon County. It was a great experience to see that they apply what they learned to create their own styles by combining traditional methods with modern elements. They were so into the charm of seogak and it made me feel so rewarded. Like I mentioned above, I think seogak is a process of leaving a trace of one’s thought in life whether it is a wooden block or stone. It is not only a physical effort we enjoy in the art but satisfaction in our heart” says Go.

Making effective teaching materials
Go plans solo exhibition and publishing a book

Go is an ardent Christian. It is not surprising, for this reason, to see the elements of Christianity in his works: Biblical quotations. But he gives diversity to styles, composition and background patterns of his works regardless the contents of the letters carved. Currently, Go is gathering his teaching materials of last 10 years to make them into a book so that those who wish to learn seogak can learn the necessary knowledge easily and effectively in one book. Also, he is planning to hold his first solo exhibition that will celebrate 20 years of his devotion to seogak. For the exhibition, he is working on carving 66 books of the Bible at the moment. It is an enormous work and the exhibition is expected to take great part to spread the charm of seogak to more people and Go is determined to show his passion and essence of his works in the exhibition.
