The kitchen and furniture tycoon delivers virtuous messages to the world
CEO Park Yoo-jae of ENEX hopes benevolence of Buddha to be spread to individual, family, society, nation and the whole world

CEO Park Yoo-jae of ENEX has built a landmark of the Korean kitchenette industry by bringing modern walk-in kitchen system to Korea. Today, ENEX has grown as a leading human furniture company and his creative and challenging spirit ascribe in many parts to his understanding and knowledge of Buddhism. <Power Korea> met CEO Park and heard about his virtuous messages to the world.

To understand vanity, selflessness
and nirvana titration is to be free from earthly desires

From a businessman to the creator of the Korea’s representative sink brand 'Oripyeo Sink (duck mark sink)', ENEX CEO Park Yoo-jae undoubtedly was a symbol of success in the 70s and a symbol of innovation in the 90s, the titles achieved through his creative and challenging business management. Now as CEO of ENEX, a Korea’s representative human furniture company, Park is looking back his 19 years of studying in Buddhism to find meaning of life over earthly success and fame. His father often told him ‘train yourself first to rule the world’ and it became the source of his success. A Buddhist philosophy of ‘look after yourself to look after others’, also made him to realize the value of co-existence. While studying hard on Buddhism, Park one day came to a conclusion that he needed to practice yet another Buddhist philosophy ‘spreading love to everyone I meet’ in order to reach ‘nirvana titration’, the last phase of the three Buddhist doctrines: the other two being ‘vanity’ and ‘selflessness’. He once ran Jaeil Pottery, a pottery distributor, through which he found a way to generate added value in the homeland and contributed to national economic development. When he jumped into kitchenette industry thereafter, he introduced modern walk-in kitchen to Korea and freed Korean women from a day long labor in the traditional kitchen to prepare food. He actually did not know anything about kitchen but he knew how to use women’s talent and labor in more productive ways. Thus started the prosperity of 'Oripyeo Sink (duck mark sink)', responding to the boom of apartment building, for the next 10 years before the business had to face its first crisis in 1989. Despite his effort in moving the factories to Yeongdong County from Seoul with rather increasing number of facilities, the market around that time was shifting to ‘consumer’s market’ from ‘seller’s market’. And the Korea’s 10% growth rate dropped to minus 1.7% in 1980 and an increasing number of rival companies made the situation even harder. Nevertheless, Park found the breakthrough from stainless sink and wooden cabinet and the sales increased by double. Park looked back that he had to face more than 8 times of crisis during these periods and his challenging spirit made him go through it all. Reading loads of books including ‘Use of Life’ in particular also was a great help. He came to know Nungin Sunwon (Buddhist school) through his sister in 1997 and he studied Buddhism in earnest from then on under the instruction of Director Monk Jigwang. Park said “My father, my colleague Jung Ui-suk, my senior Park Young-geun and CEO Nishida Seumaru of Wako were and are all my mentors and Buddha.” Park hopes that benevolence of Buddha is spread to individual, family, society, nation and the whole world and he would like to introduce the three Buddhist doctrines on this page:

Vanity: Everything changes and circles around. Living things all die one day, and civilization and nation have ups and downs, and the universe (matter) is void.

Selflessness: Nothing is mine in this world even my own body. Body is a bowl that contains a soul and the corpse scatters through dust, wind, fire and water when the soul leaves. It applies to all living things no matter even if you once ware the king of the whole world.

Nirvana titration: You can reach this level by understanding the above two. It simply means that you enter the state of nirvana: free from all earthly desires, agonies and pleasures.

“Without understanding of these three, people constantly fall into temptation, hostility and conflict. We need to remember that we all die one day and not a single thing we can carry with us when the time comes. With this understanding and practice of the teachings of Buddha, we can avoid these vicious circles of human history. Businessmen need to be aware of social responsibilities and politicians should value more of nation than party politics. I hope we all throw away our own selfishness but work together in harmony to make a better society, nation and the world.”
