CEO Han Min-jung of Jin Buddhist Art Institute
Spreading the Korean Buddhist art to the world
Buddhist art, painting in particular, delivers the teachings of Buddha with the art as medium. The Korean Buddhist paintings especially have splendid colors and various patterns. While the traditional paintings are rather standardized, CEO Han Min-jung of Jin Buddhist Art Institute has built her own styles. <Power Korea> met her.
Spreading the teachings of Buddha for 22 years
Han majored in art and started to build her interest when she visited a temple on Buddha’s birthday with her mother. Meeting a Buddhist painting master soon after in 1995 encouraged Han to push forward her interest to a different level and she has walking the single path for the last 22 years. Han’s works are unique in terms of the colors she uses. They are more like modern paintings rather than traditional Buddhist paintings and Han borrowed wash drawing method of the traditional Korean paintings to give that uniqueness.
Solo exhibition soon to be opened
Han intends to use her Buddhist paintings as a tool to resolve the troubled mind of the people. She uses various materials and methods such as bunchae (synthetic pigments), lacquer and scanning in repetition to create modern yet traditional colors and styles. These elements are clearly seen in her works ‘Dream or Real?’ containing the contents of Wongakkyeong, ‘Prayer of Mother’ wishing longevity, ‘Eoram Gwaneumdo’ the release of captive animals. In her solo exhibition ‘Emptiness & Void’ in 2014, Han looked back her past to see the future and her 5th exhibition ‘Asking Buddha The Way’ was supported by Gwangju Cultural Foundation. Han also was chosen as The Artist of The Year’ by an art club in Chosun University and she currently is preparing for another solo exhibition. “I will talk about the meaning of traditional and modern Buddhist paintings and the values they contain” explains Han. She says art is a soundless language through which artists deliver their messages to the appreciators like music and dancing do it with sound and movement. “Buddhist paintings are based on the teachings of Buddha but the passion of the creator is more important when it comes to the curves, patterns, colors and compositions” says Han. <Power Korea> wishes Han a successful solo exhibition.
