Passion and tenacity carve life into clay
Sculptor Jang Yong-ho of Gyeongju Sculpture Research Institute

Master of realistic body sculpting
Sculptor Jang Yong-ho of Gyeongju Sculpture Research Institute has produced realistic face sculptures the most in Korea. He has produced more than 1,000 sculptures of face and body in standing and seating as well as bust, Buddhist statues, reliefs and the original forms of craftworks. He also contributed to development of religious art. He was born in Yeongdeok County and showed artistic talent from his early age. He graduated from Pohang College and learned sculpture from Kim Man-sul, regarded as the first modern sculptor of the province, on recommendation of artist Hong Kim. Jang’s talent in sculpture was great that Kim Man-sul praised his skill in high. Kim studied sculpture at Kozosha Sculpture Research Institute with Japanese sculptors Saito Sowon and Hinago Jisugo and Saito was a pupil of Antoine Bourdelle, an influential French sculptor. So we can say that Kim belonged to Bourdelles school genealogy and Jang is in the line.

Unique sculpting world shown through energetic shaping
Jang is the first Korean sculptor who was invited to The 3rd China Sculpture Art Festival and his works were displayed alongside the other invited sculptors from 10 countries. One of his works ‘Narcissus, the Stone Reflected on the Water’ became a permanent collection of Haeansi, Bogunsung in China and he gave a special lecture and demonstration on bust at Jingdezhen University. Despite this international recognition, Jang has participated in the National Art Exhibition only twice in Korea. This might ascribe to Kim’s teaching “Do not pursue accomplishments but focus on your own sculpting world.” Photographer Mun Sun-ho once said “Jang is too good to be a hermit in the local” and art critic Kim Nam-su once compared Jang with artist Park Soo-keun. “I feel an utter euphoria whenever I complete a work by carving life into clay and stone” says Jang. Jang’s works are being recognized from Sotheby’s and Christie’s at the moment and they are highly expected to shine their value in international exhibitions. When asked about his future plan, Jang said “I want to create a sculpture park that will last for many years. It was actually my teacher Kim’s wish and I want to fulfill it if I can. I also personally wish to find junior sculptors who will continue my art world.” The father of modern sculpture Rodin said “Beauty is everywhere. It is not that she is lacking to our eye, but our eyes which fail to perceive her.” <Power Korea> hopes that Jang’s pure passion and tenacity in sculpture will write a new history of Korean sculpture one day.
