Give a rest to your body and soul at Hwangnyong Temple

Located in Eunjeom Mountain, Hwangnyong Temple was built by King Sosung, the 39th King of the Silla Kingdom. The name Hwangnyong means ‘as if hiding the dews’ reflecting the fact that the waters in the valleys were still flowing despite the 5 year long drought in history. For this reason, numerous kings of the kingdom sometimes paid a visit to the temple to give a rest to their body and soul. Medicinal herbs are also found nearby the temple and Yaksayeoraesang (statue of Buddha) in the temple gives comforts especially to the visitors with illness. Chief Monk Doyeon of the temple holds a service on weekend and a contemplation ceremony called ‘Moonlight Contemplation’ on Samsunggak (Samsung pavilion) in the valley nearby the temple. The temple also has recently seen an increase in number of temple stayers and tourists.

Recovering relics of Silla and Goryeo

There are various cultural assets around the temple. The temple site of Hwangnyong Temple has traces of two stone pagodas, roof tiles and footstones of Buddhist statues which were all destroyed through wars and storms. “I hope the traces will be researched and recovered by specialists and Dongguk University, Gyeongju National Park, Cultural Heritage Administration and the local government are currently preparing for excavation” says Doyeon. Doyeon left home in 1997 and studied at Songgwang and Haein Temples before became Chief Monk of Hwangnyong Temple in 2010. As part of spreading Buddha’s teachings, Doyeon gives a service to prisoners of Gyeongju Prison and helps people in need by bathing them or cutting hair. Meanwhile, monks and believers of Bulguk Temple including the chief monk, erected a statue of Buddha in Samsung Pavilion Hwangnyong Temple in March this year.
