Jeonju joins hands with Suwon
Jeonju and Suwon are going sister cities. Jeonju Mayor Kim Seoung-su and Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young held the a sister-city affiliation ceremony on 13 last month at the Suwon City Hall and 100 people including local government officials and council members attended. Under the city slogan ‘People’s City, Best Jeonju’ and ‘People First, Bigger Suwon’, the two cities will find ways for exchange and co-growth based on the common values of the historical assets they have and as the co-host cities of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2017. Kim and Yeom agreed to exchange knowhow in youth policy, economy, culture, education, sports and human resource and closely work together for the opening match (Jeonju) and the final match (Suwon) of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. They also agreed to build a healthy food network so that the citizens can enjoy more quality food. Mayor Kim said “The two cities have many things in common and I and my 670,000 citizens welcome the sisterhood relations” which was responded by Mayor Yeom “One city cannot do and achieve everything alone but with the help from a neighboring city in the parts where what we lack. We are sure that the agreement will enable us to create better cities.”
Jeonju recognized as a slow city
Jeongju City was recognized as a slow city from the Cittaslow International. Formerly, only the Jeonju Korean Village was recognized as such but it was expanded to the whole city this time thanks to the city’s well maintained tradition, nature and slow life patterns. The recognition is expected to further spread the popularity of the yearly 10 million tourist visit city to the world. Mayor Kim Seoung-su, with 30 officials of related organizations held a press conference on 31 last month and said “The slow city certificate appraisal take place once in five years and the city was recognized this time for improved accommodation and hospitality, slow city promotional events, slow city brand marketing and resident support.” Kim added “Hereby, Jeonju has become the sole large city-level slow city in the world. Some citizens are worried that the increasing number of tourists might turn the city too commercial. But as the mayor, I assure our citizens that the city will do its utmost effort to maintain the traditional and cultural values of the city but only spread the title ‘Slow City Jeonju’ to the world.”
