Development of 10 times improved next generation nano generator

Changing the way we see things to bring innovation

A nano generator generates electricity by using 1m/1billion matters and piezoelectric effect. Even a little movement can generate electricity with this device but the amount of energy generated is too little which has made it hard to commercialize. There have been numerous researches on improving this drawback among physicists all over the world. In this respect, it is not surprising that the new concept nano generator developed by using ‘flexoelectricity’ by the team of Chonbuk National University physics professor Bu Sang-don is drawing global attention. The existing nano generators so far have proved to have low generating efficiency due to a thin piezoelectric film and researchers have focused on mixing conductor and piezoelectric body to solve the problem. But the new concept nano generator even has improved the convergence of these two parts. The team developed a complex structured piezoelectric sample by growing PZT nano particle on the surface of MWCNT to develop the generator to generate 10 times high output voltage. The team currently is seeing the commercialization of the generator in near future and the news has been published on Scientific Reports online. “We are expecting to apply our technology to wearables and in-body medical devices in the future. It might also be seen as a solution for oil depletion when subminiature electricity generators become possible to commercialize” predicts Bu. 

Walking the single path with passion and challenging spirit
Bu obtained both master’s degree and PhD at Sogang University. He then crossed the Pacific Ocean to the US and worked as a researcher at Duke University and University of Wisconsin. He worked as a research professor at Seoul National University when he came back and is currently working for Chonbuk National University. He has published 20 papers on academic journals home and abroad and obtained 5 patents relating to nano structure and material properties, of which, one on PZT Nano Tube, which has 50nm external diameter and 3-7mm wall thickness, being published on Nano Letters. In recognitions of his contribution to the field, Bu received The Chonbuk National University Academic Awards 2008, The Excellent Science Technology Thesis Awards 2016, and five excellent presentation prizes at numerous international symposiums and 15 at domestic symposiums. But his total papers published since graduate school count 115 (SCI 99, non-SCI 16) of which 9 have been quoted more than 100 times and around 4,200 times of the whole level quotation. “You can’t see the fruits of your research in a short period of time if you are a physicist. Diligence, patience and consistency, and above all the passion, for this reason, are much required virtues of them” says Bu.
