Expansion of sculpture’s inner meaning
Flowerpots made from scrapped cars
Im Jung-gyu, sculptor and adjunct professor at Hannam University

From scrapped cars to flowerpots

With his work ‘Desire Goes to Nature’, sculptor Im surprised both art critics and viewers at Gongju International Art Festival last year. Im majored in art education and obtained a master’s degree from Hannam University and a PhD in formative arts from Dankook University. Im usually made body sculptures and once reinterpreted Mongyudowondo, Ahn Gyeon’s famous Joseon Dynasty painting, as a sculpture. He started to turn his style to sculptures made of industrial waste when he saw a pile of scrapped cars at his friend’s workplace. Im uses the waste to create the figure of man, animals and plants in flowerpots and you can actually grow plants or flowers in the pots. Im sees the pots as an extension of the plants growing up towards various directions in various forms and avoids too much unrealistic elements in order for viewers to interpret his works without troubling their intelligence much. ‘Family’, for example, resembles circles and curves while ‘Face’ a tin robot. It is Im’s intention that people enjoy the pleasure of appreciating an art work and growing a plant at the same time with his work.

Making a landmark with sculptures
Seeing Im’s works, one might conjure up an image of an abandoned rusty helmet in the DMZ. Im takes a considerable amount of time to give an appropriate color and texture of the surface through corrosion and welding. His idea of plant and face was found at cutting the holed works he was about to throw away from which he tend to develop the subject ‘resurrection of waste and awe of life’ in a form of industrial arts. Im at the moment uses exhaust stacks, drums and igniter plugs for his works but plans to expand the parts to engines from various types of cars. Giving a new life to industrial waste for Im is a meaningful work as people can think about the things they once threw away when they come back in difference forms. In his work ‘Nature Birth II’, we might find the vitality of a just born plant and ‘Sunflower’ and ‘Tree’ the yearning to reach the sky. Currently, Im is preparing for a solo exhibition scheduled to be held at The KBS Daejeon on 20-26 August and he will display 12 to 15 works. When asked about future plan, Im said “My father also is an artist and is running a gallery at the moment. One day, I want to fill up the gallery garden with my works.”
