영어교육은 모든 부모들의 숙제라고 해도 과언이 아니다. 기존의 영어교육이 문법과 작문 위주로 진행되어 회화를 익히기 힘들고, 회화를 배운다고 하더라도 기초적인 수준을 벗어나 원어민과 비슷한 수준으로 자유롭게 영어를 구사할 수 있는 경우는 그리 많지 않다. 그래서 학부모들 사이에서 조기유학이 유행하고 있는 것이기도 하다. 하지만 유학에 드는 비용 없이도 국내에서 충분히 외국어를 익힐 수 있는 환경이 있다면 어떨까. ‘모국어 습득원리’를 기반으로 한 영어 학습의 최강자 ‘토스에듀케이션’은 최근 새로운 프로그램을 출시하고 품격 있는 영어 교육에 박차를 가하고 있다.

토스에듀케이션은 한때 경영진의 방만한 운영으로 어려움을 겪었던 것이 사실이지만, 최근 새로운 경영진을 발탁하고 고도로 발전된 프로그램을 선보여 영어 교육 시장에서 새롭게 주목받고 있다. 토스에듀케이션의 김동건 신임대표는 “영어에 노출이 되고 귀가 열려야 자유로운 회화가 가능하다. 이를 위해 토스에듀케이션은 환경을 바꾸는 영어교육을 도입했다. 뉴스 등의 미디어나 영화, 미드(미국 드라마) 등 다양한 매체를 도입하여 이미지를 통해 영어를 연상시킬 수 있도록 만든 것이 우리의 장점이다”라고 말한다. 토스에듀케이션의 교육과정은 준비(적응) 과정 - 정규과정(미믹킹(mimicking, 흉내내기) 훈련과 추측하기) - 심화과정(표현하기) - 특화과정(완성하기)으로 구성되어 있다. 이 과정을 통해 그 동안의 단어 어법 문법의 오류들이 자연스럽게 잡혀 가는 것이다.

‘모국어 습득원리’에 의한 자유로운 영어 학습 가능해
“내년 경 중국어 수업 런칭할 것”
(주)토스에듀케이션의 ‘모국어 습득원리’에 따른 학습법은 DVD를 보고 원어민의 발음, 표현, 억양, 리듬 등을 자유롭게 익히고 오감을 통해 영어를 습득하는 훈련법이다. 특히 대부분의 수업을 게임과 액티비티로 구성하여 학생들의 주의를 집중시킬 수 있는 장점이 있어, 활기차고 즐거운 영어 훈련이 가능하다. ‘모국어 습득원리’에 따른 학습법은 토스에듀케이션에서 시작해 많은 브랜드에서 따라하고 있다. 그러나 이것의 완벽한 구현을 위해서는 학습법, 커리큘럼, 학습보조 도구의 완벽한 조화가 필수다. 김 대표는 “어려서부터 주변사람들이 이야기하는 것을 보고 듣고 따라하면서 모국어를 자연스럽게 습득했듯이 영어 역시 영어를 쓰는 환경 속에서 지속적인 훈련을 해야 귀가 뚫리고 입을 뗄 수 있다”고 말했다.

토스에듀케이션은 현재 우리나라에서 유일하게 4년 이상의 데이터를 보유한 토론교재를 갖고 있으며, 13년 어치의 전체 과정이 담긴 교재도 준비되어 있다. 특히 토스에듀케이션에서 사용하는 어학학습기는 학습기 시장에서 독보적인 위치를 차지해 왔다. 이 학습기는 문장 하나하나에 번호를 부여하고 이를 무한 반복해 들을 수 있으며, 재생 후 자동정지 기능과 자막내용 자동인식 및 저장기능, 문장번호에 의한 이동기능, 자막 내 단어검색 기능 등 영어회화에 필요한 모든 기능이 들어있다.

김 대표는 “내년 경에는 영어와 함께 G2로 부상하고 있는 중국어 관련 수업도 런칭할 예정이다. 한 교육생이 두 가지의 언어를 동시에 배울 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 전국 각지의 다문화가정 아이들에게도 도움이 될 수 있을 것이라 생각한다. 이를 통해 다문화사업영역을 추가해가고자 하며 우리나라의 문화를 바탕으로 교육컨텐츠를 수출하는 것을 최종 목적으로 한다”는 포부를 전했다.

한편, (주)토스에듀케이션은 지난 7월 22일 서울프레스센터에서 열린 2016 대한민국 미래경영대상에서 우수교육기관 부문을 수상하며 영어회화 교육의 발전을 위해 노력해온 그간의 성과를 인정받았다. 이번 대한민국 미래경영대상은 하루에도 수십 개의 기업과 제품, 브랜드가 탄생하고 있는 글로벌 자유경쟁시장 속에서 건전한 기업문화를 창출하고 사회의 각 분야에서 뛰어난 경쟁력으로 미래 기업 가치를 창달하는 여러 기업, 기관, 인물, 브랜드 등을 선정한 시상식이다.

헤럴드경제가 주최하고 월간파워코리아와 한국소비자경영평가원이 주관한 이번 시상식에서는 서울시 강동구, 충청남도 서산시, 전라남도 영광군 등 3개 지방자치단체와 함께 의정 부문에서 탁월한 성과를 남긴 지역 의회 국회의원, 전국의 유망 중소기업 30여 개 업체가 함께 선정되어 더욱 의미 있는 성과였다고 할 수 있다.

김 대표는 “이번 수상을 계기로 더 나은 토스에듀케이션이 되기 위해 운영에 박차를 가하겠다. 기존의 영어 학습기만이 아니라 스마트학습기기를 추가 특허 신청할 예정이며, 현재 전국 영업망을 위한 준비를 마친 상태다”라고 소감을 말했다. 국내 영어교육 시장의 혁신을 불러오고 있는 토스에듀케이션에게는 밝은 미래가 기다리고 있다.

Toss Education is the one which spread the familiar words such as ‘principle of mother tongue’, ‘mimicking’ and ‘proficiency’ in English education. Most English institutes were run based on rote learning by the time these new methods were introduced and Toss Education actually proved its effectiveness. The class also contains games and activities alongside the method so that student can give more focus. Many other institutes today use this principle but learning method, curriculum and supplements are a must to maximize its effect to the fullness. “Children learn languages by mimicking others. Likewise, we need to approach a foreign language by exposing ourselves to English speaking environment” explains Kim. Toss Education is the only company in Korea that has more than 4 years of data of speaking resources and it also has materials that contain 13 years of accumulated knowhow and experience. Toss Education’s learning machine is especially good as each sentence in the device has unique number so that you can repeat the sentence as long as you like and it also provides functions of auto-recognition, saving, shifting and vocabulary search. “To meet the ever growing market demand for Chinese, we are planning to launch Chinese courses next year. Winning 2016 Korea Future Management Awards 
In recognition of contribution to foreign language education in Korea, Toss Education received The 2016 Korea Future Management Awards held at Korea Press Center on 22 July in the excellent educational institute category. The awards go to those who have proved innovation and competitiveness in the market and three local governments, city council members and 30 promising companies were chosen this year. “We take the awards as a whip to leap forward and lead foreign language education in Korea. We are currently working on introducing ‘smart language learning devices’ and building a business network nationwide so that more people can benefit from our new teachingmethods."
