Park’s diplomacy in 11th ASEM and summit talks
Korea-Mongolia Summit strengthens economic cooperation

On the occasion of the 11th ASEM in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, held on 15-16 July 2016, President Park had a summit with Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj on 17 July and exchanged opinions on practical bilateral cooperation and regional and global issues. The two leaders looked back on Korea-Mongolia Comprehensive Partnership established in 2011 and agreed to upgrade the level of cooperation. Park praised Elbegdorj’s support for denuclearization in the Korean Peninsula and peaceful unification delivered at the 11th ASEM and Elbegdorj in return said that his policy of peace in Northeast Asia is unchanging and he would keep providing his utmost effort in maintaining cooperative relationship with S. Korea. Elbegdorj continued “Korea is our 4th biggest trade partner and it is important for two countries to sign EPA (Economic Partnership Agreement) to enhance economic cooperation and investment” which responded by President Park “I’m pleased that both countries decided to launch a joint research on EPA and I believe it will increase trade volume between the two countries.”

Park holds a summit with leaders of EU
During the 11th ASEM, President Park held a summit talk with Donald Tusk, President of the European Council and Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission and discussed on Korea-EU relations after Brexit and regional and global issues. Park said that the EU would turn the current Brexit crisis as an opportunity like it always did and Korea would be a firm cooperative partner to grow together. Although there is possibility for neoisolationism and new protectionism to spread, close multi-organizational cooperation such as ASEM, G20 and APEC based on FTA would enhance economic cooperation Park added. Tusk and Juncker in respond said that nothing had been changed since Brexit but the relations between members countries of the EU had actually more strengthened and it would not affect Korea-EU relations at all. Park then thanked the EU for denouncing North’s missile launching and nuclear tests and subsequent sanctions and asked them to keep working together to bring peace to the Korean Peninsula.

Park holds a summit with Thongloun Sisoulith
Also at the 11th ASEM, President Park held a summit talk with Thongloun Sisoulith, Prime Minister of Laos, on 15 July and exchanged opinions on practical cooperation and mutual interests. Since the reestablishment of diplomatic ties in 1995, the trade and investment volumes of the two countries have significantly increased and the two leaders agreed to expand practical cooperation to a one step forward. Sisoulith mentioned that the Korea’s New Village Movement in Laos was widely spreading and asked Park to invest more in the fields of health, human resource and aviation. Park in respond said that there were currently 100 Korean companies operating in Laos and she exampled ‘Xenamnoy Waterpower Generation Project’ as a good complementary cooperation. Park also asked Sisoulith a continuous support for denuclearization of the North Korea and peaceful unification and Sisoulith responded that he would give unsparing support to bring peace to Northeast Asia.
