Artist Dahn Kim
Unique ink works embracing childhood sentiment through woman and rocks
Invitation exhibition in July and solo exhibition in September
“Spending childhood in nature was the source of my inspiration”

Born in Inje County, Gangwon Province, Kim loved painting from her childhood. Her home town, a remote place as it was, she grew up lonely but found a little comfort by drawing a figure here and there. She soon realized her talent in drawing and made it her day-long hobby. Though she had some friends, she remembers herself as introspective and nonsocial in those times. Yet her talent in painting enchanted her friends enough to draw a picture for them. But her love in art was rather deviated from the course of her life and she led a normal life; she chose a major at university which had nothing to do with art and busy adopting the life in Seoul. It was only after her marriage in which she found some spare time that she woke up her dormant passion in art. As her accumulated desire for painting was so long ignored, she compensated for it by working day and night, attending various art classes. After a certain amount of time, she eventually found her own style.

Woman in ink, heavy and deep but comforts the hearts of appreciators
Kim’s art works are closely related to her childhood. She delivers her childhood sentiment and sadness through the lines and silhouettes of a woman in ink. The sentiment and sadness in other word is the pain she saw and grew up with from her mother who had to give birth to seven sisters in order to get a baby boy; the son preference society which was common in those times especially in the country side. Kim maximized the sentiment of socially victimized women as whole by painting the background of a canvas with rock dust and acrylic without gesso to give more strength to the inner side over outside beauty of the object.

Telling about hopeful existence in darkness
and the process to know the other me inside

Rocks and Kim are inseparable. She explains “Lately, I visited my home town and found the site of my house disappeared but a pile of rocks as they were. I felt mixed feelings of fear and happiness; it might be a tomb of soldiers or a corpse of baby under; nevertheless it was my childhood playground. Naturally, rocks in her works are reinterpretation of the pile of rocks.

Her famous work ‘The Earth – Portrait of Mother’, expressed with skeleton born between the rocks, for example, implies the fear and terror, yet the cyclic processes of nature, reside in our side. The earth is the womb of a mother and a perfect universe where all living things are born with which Kim wants to secure the limitless creative possibility as an artist. Colleting all the physical and emotional process, occurred when creating, into one breathing also is vital in order to keep the original intention till the end according to Kim. And this painstaking process will bear fruits in an invitation exhibition at Able Fine Art Gallery (Hwa-dong, Seoul) in July this month followed by a solo exhibition at Chelsea, New York within the year. <Power Korea> wishes Kim a great success.
