A warm and hopeful gaze at daily life
“An artist is a person who can show people a world beyond”
Artist Ryu Myeong-ki

The landscape that interprets artificial borders

It was only a short period of time that Ryu hung around the Korean painting as he felt that painting landscapes with ink often neglected the reality of the world we live in today. And this rather sorry feeling made him always come back to reality from his imaginations. So he changed the way he thinks. Ryu explains “I think a conception is made from the reality of our daily life rather than nature. So I decided to create my works with more realistic expressions based on my pursuit of a world beyond. I replaced the rural landscape for urban landscape and the Korean painting’s beauty of scantiness for black background.” This rather dreary composition nevertheless delivers an impression of vitality by the artist’s warm and hopeful gaze at daily life as shown in ‘The Moon on a Crazy Day’, ‘The Tasteless Gaze of a Smoker Who Got Crowded Out to Stairways of 109 Block’ and ‘Let Us Live….in Longing’. Rather than seeking a grand meaning of our life, Ryu tries to find a simple yet small touchy attraction in his daily life. He sees the city today as once a place where only trees and the dust on a vast desolate land could say hello to the passing wind. To express this melancholy sentiment, Ryu uses various materials such as ink, pigments, soil, acrylics and oil floor papers.

Fans and walls for canvases
Despite the application of his new findings, Ryu always comes back to the Korean landscape paintings. But he prefers traditional Korean fans especially made in Jeonju to the normal (Korean) papers. Unlike many other artists who paint first on the paper and stick it to the bars of a fan, Ryu directly paint on a completed fan.  His works on the fans then travel back to the city’s Korean Fan Exhibition Hall. Ryu also is famous for mural paintings. He started it 4 years ago and has done numerous impressive works including one in Sihwa Village in Namwon and some of the areas in Jeongju. He currently is working on the walls of an elementary school in Gimje. Ryu says “A Korean fan is one of sought-after Korean souvenirs and it takes great part in spreading Korean crafts and culture to the world. In terms of wall painting, I see some people like it and some don’t but the contrast makes me more curious and motivated.” Meanwhile, Ryu is giving free lectures on art for culturally neglected class of people from this month.
