Artist Kim Eun-sook
“Everybody loves a warm watercolor”
Kim touches many hearts of people with distant memories

I wasn’t a born artist but my desire for painting naturally led me to be. I don’t even have any special philosophy about art. But I know I smile with a flower, ease my heart with a river and yearn for a travel when seeing a mountain. And I made them into art works and say to myself “Yes, it was like that. It was the flower and the river I saw and the mountain I climbed when I was a child.” My art world is about these distant yet warm memories which I can smile with. – From a note of the artist –
A charm of watercolor in a way can be explained with its transparency. And the artist can complete a work in a shorter time than other types of art. There are many Korean watercolors today that have depth and weight thanks to the development of quality paints and materials. A question then arise: Why they stick to watercolor when many others prefer oil and acrylic? The answer is because the former has limitless materials to use and the artists can create their unique expressions according their styles. Also, Korean watercolor is closely related to traditional ink paintings and its beauty of scantiness. In other words, it can appeal better to busy modern people whose lives are full of schedules.

The watercolor-fullness of intimacy and warmness
Artist Kim Eun-sook is famous for landscape painting and still life. But her watercolor also is well praised for its unique depiction and texture: ‘Backyard of Hometown Dwelling’ shows the dwelling and the wall showered by sunlight, ‘The Sound of Bugs’ shows bugs on grasses, ‘Joy’ shows full of smiley flowers, ‘Spring On Unhyeon Palace’ shows the walls covered by magnolia, ‘Sweet Smell’ shows firewood burning in a furnace, ‘A Scene Under The Eaves’ shows dried persimmons hanging on the eaves of a cottage in winter and ‘Apple and Sunflower’ shows red apple-full of a basket. Although they are all watercolor, each work has its own intimate and warm color and character. Kim explains “An apple tree bears many apples but they all have the same taste. Likewise, many of my works are different in color and form but they all have intimacy and warmness in the center.”

Quenching thirst for vitality through ‘Lotus Series’
Kim’s Lotus Series contains her childhood memories: She had to be parted from her parents for some reason when she was eight and her yearning for the brooks, fields and wild flowers of her hometown grew stronger day by day. She found art as a means for letting this feeling out and she poured of her childhood memories into ‘Another Me’ of the Lotus Series. Kim explains “I thought I was like a lotus flower: it changes its form through rooting, blossoming, withering and leaving black seeds. It was like a reflection of my future.” If the flower symbolizes ‘mercy’ in Buddhism, it means a contemplation, love and vitality for Kim. Lotus flower and Korean chrysanthemum are Kim’s main themes to express a touchy sentiment in a work. Kim says “I feel like to bow my head when seeing a lotus flower blossomed from harsh environment and to respect when the leaves are falling down one by one. I gave different color and simplicity for each lotus to express its desire, thirst and joy. Whenever I completed a lotus, I felt there might be a world where I could reflect myself into the mirror and I tried to quench my thirst for vitality through this Lotus Series.”

Serving for the H.Q Loyalty Filial Piety Etiquette Practice
While quenching her thirst for vitality through her art works, Kim has engaged in social service activities through the H.Q Loyalty Filial Piety Etiquette Practice which inspires students with patriotism, loyalty and filial piety. The organization regularly organizes a visit to Seoul National Cemetery and cleans up the headstones and provides personality education for students. Kim has also worked as a clerk for the Korean Fine Arts Association Dongjak Branch for 5 years in which she has given a helping hand to fellow artists. Although Kim is widely known as a watercolor artist, her love of Korean ink painting is special. Kim explains “One morning in the office, when I just started to work for a company in my twenties, I was drawn to this ink smell spreading from my boss’ rubbing an ink stick. The smell was so good and it gave me the motivation to start Korean painting. I’m currently planning to hold a solo exhibition for watercolor and literary paintings within 2 or 3 years and I’m also planning to publish my poems in near future. Kim adds “I hope my works can give a piece of comfort to many people and I will keep carrying out my passion in art and social contribution.”
