[Hadong Special] CEO Lee Young-hwan of Jeongseongdeuri
Jeongseongdeuri, the safe and tasty food company
Safe and tasty food for your family

Lee was born and grew in Hadong County. He played around the Seomjin River and ate a lot of the Korean clam (corbicula) living under the clean river. He started to get a business idea with this local specialty as he grew up and eventually established jeongseongdeuri.com in 2010 so that more people can enjoy quality Hadong clams. “There are a lot of clam factories in the county but how to create unique taste with the same ingredients is the key to make a success in the business” said Lee.

It is not easy to collect the clams and make them into food. People used to rinse the mud off by rubbing them with hands or treading them on with foot. Today, they use washing machine. They boil the clams for 10 minutes and separate the clams and the broth to keep. They then separate the shell and the flesh and rinse them for many times in order to remove the mud perfectly. “I developed a patented machine that can effectively remove the mud from the sand while keeping the flesh intact. Also, as the taste of clams varies according their habitats and the season, I run the factory 24/7 in order to maintain the same taste” said Lee. Thanks to his innovation in the manufacturing process and contribution to the regional economy, Lee received ministerial prize from the Ministry of Oceans and Fishers at the 2014 Marine Products Brand Awards.

“Korean clam is good for hangover, anemia and liver diseases”
The Korean clams live under the mud of the river and can only survive in the clean water. It is prolific that one clam can see her daughter and a grandchild over a night according to a local saying. The clams live in the mud are black while the ones live under the sand are yellowish brown. The locals collect the clams between April and October and 90% of them live in the Seomjin River. They are rich in calcium, iron, phosphorus, vitamin B2/B6/B12, protein and taurine. Methionine in the clams is known to stimulate the liver, succinic acid to help bile secretion, the balanced amount of calcium and phosphorus to prevent pernicious anemia and amino acid and minerals to recover body from fatigue and to cure hangover. “The clams make our eye clean and relieve fatigue. They improve liver functions and cure jaundice. They make the stomach comfortable, purify urine, adjust sugar level, lower a fever and raise vitality” records an ancient medical book.

With the Korean clam soup as main product of Jeongseongdeuri, CEO Lee also makes oyster soup which is good for skin according to him. “Up until last year we made a variety of clam products such as soup, sap and chili-pepper paste. But the advent of cheap Chinese clams actually put a stop to our production of them. But our consistency in quality turned the situation more favorable to us in the end and the business is well on the tract again. We will keep doing our best to make fresh and health food for the people.”
