[Hadong County Special] President Chung So-am of Dao Agricultural Association Corporation
Hadong’s green tea goes global
Spreading Korea’s tea food to the world
Hwagae-myeon (Hadong County)’s humid and foggy climate and great temperature difference between day and night makes an ideal condition for tea trees to grow in the region. Hwagae’s stunning landscape also attracted many poets and writers who left impressive literary legacies in the region. CEO Chung So-am of DA’O Tea Food was born to a family whose history goes back to hundreds of years in the region and she succeeded the family business and has been producing green tea for a long time. Chung’s motto ‘Never stop, never stay’ is the very source of her diligence and consistency to make tea products. She picks tea leaves to make black tea in spring and summer, 1 ton of tea seeds in autumn to make 7kg of raw seed oil and tea flowers in winter to produce honey and vinegar. She in particular has made raw green tea oil for 10 years to make the most of its excellent nutrients: monounsaturated fat (over 90%), tocopherol (50 times more than olive oil) and benzopyrene (43 times more than sesame seeds when fried). She once moved her base to Busan to run a directly managed store and came to know about ‘Keemun black tea’ known as one of the three black teas of the world. But the taste was no better than ‘jacksal tea’ she used to drink when she was a child and she decided to bring the taste back. Being a tea expert but not a businesswoman, her ‘jacksal tea’ was stolen by a cheeky fellow who registered the brand on his name even though Chung was the first who introduced the tea, the case which followed by many similar cases thereafter. This led her to establish Dao Agricultural Association Corporation in 2007. DA’O Tea Food has more than 20 kinds of products including white tea, black tea, blue tea, green tea, yellow tea, traditional jacksal tea, noback tea, noheung tea, nochung tea, nohwang tea, green tea oil, green tea seeds, green tea flower vinegar, green tea sauce, green tea flower honey, green tea teazam and green tea liquor. Some of the products have been appeared on media and Chung has won numerous prizes including a participation prize at the Korea Tea Packaging Design Exhibition and the governor’s prize of South Gyeongsang Province for her contribution to the Korean tea industry.
