\3대에 걸친 칠보의 잔향이 실용성을 만나 가치를 더하다

장신구가 될 귀금속, 장인의 예술정신, 공기와 불이 어우러진 소성기술이 만난 칠보는 보석의 요소인 미와 불멸의 정기를 지녔기에 귀족들에게 널리 사랑받아 온 소장예술품이다. 난이도가 높아 전문가들의 문화로 자리매김했던 칠보가 이제 현대적 감성을 더해 귀하디귀한 생활공예품에서 생활 속 문화예술품으로 한 걸음 가까이 다가왔다. 3대에 걸친 칠보장인 기술을 민간과 세계에 전하는 반초갤러리를 개관한 박수경 대표를 만나 자세한 이야기를 들어 보았다.

금속, 유약, 불이 삼합을 이룬 정교한 동양의 앤티크 ‘칠보’를 알리다
‘다반향초(차를 마신 지 반나절이 되었으나 그 향은 처음과 같다)’라는 구절에서 ‘반초’라는 호를 지어 받은 반초갤러리 박수경 대표는 금하상회로 출발해 정식 법인이 된 ㈜금하칠보의 설립자이자, 한국 칠보 문화계승 명문가 김이두 선생의 손녀이다. (사)한국칠보공예협회 이사장직을 수행하고 칠보유약제조전수를 받은 박 대표는 지난 6월 9일 ㈜금하칠보의 하이브랜드인 반초갤러리를 오픈했다. 칠보공예는 금, 은, 구리 등에 유약을 올려 건조시킨 뒤, 800℃의 불에 소성한 뒤 도자기소성이 그러하듯 형태왜곡이 없는 것들만 살려내는 고급 공예다. 그래서 칠보공예는 완성 후 변색이 없고 광택이 아름다워 어머니가 딸에게, 그리고 손녀에게 대대로 전해주는 귀중품이었다. 사극의 왕후·대비전 보석함을 장식하고, 보석함에 채워진 패물에서도 당당하게 상단을 차지하던 칠보는 고가품인 까닭에 그동안 수집, 감상용으로 전수되어 왔다. 반초갤러리에서는 보다 전문적인 과정으로 한국식 앤티크를 추구한다. 박 대표는 이러한 칠보의 전통을 DIY생활용품, SPA의류를 선호하는 현대의 취향 및 실용미와 결합해, 많은 이들이 향유할 수 있는 고급문화 소재로 개발하기 위해 반초갤러리를 오픈했다고 밝혔다. 칠보는 보석류나 장신구처럼 작은 종류도 있지만, 공예품에도 응용되기 때문에 큰 가마가 필요했다. 박 대표는 일반인들에게 칠보를 강의하기 위해, 가로 세로 30cm가량의 소형 가마를 개발했다. 그래서 취미로 입문했다가 적성을 찾는 사람도 있고, 작은 장신구의 경우 굽는 데 2~10분 이내라는 짧은 시간이 걸리기 때문에 대중성을 확보하고 문화상품 및 교육적 가치가 높다. 또한 박 대표의 삼촌이기도 한 김선봉 칠보유약 명인만 갖고 있는 고유의 유약기술이 결합해 세계에서 유래가 없는 반초갤러리만의 묵직하고 우아한 색감을 만든다는 것도 빼놓을 수 없다. 명인들의 아이디어를 취합한 디자인, 시제품 제작, 장단점 분석과 수정 후 출시되는 제품 개발 때문에 박 대표는 지난 2년 간 하루도 쉬어본 적이 없다고 고백한다.

반초갤러리를 통해 현대인도 공감할 칠보의 가치전승 이뤄갈 것
반초갤러리의 컨셉트는 박 대표의 호이자 갤러리의 유래가 된 다도에 걸맞게 ‘향’, ‘다도’이다. 소반과 차도구, 수제 기념품, 주얼리 등을 제작하고, 생활공예품과 가구를 칠보로 장식해 리폼하는 과정도 병행 중이다. 보석과 도자기의 장점만을 취한 칠보이기에, 재테크와 예술가치, 소장가치, 문화적 의의를 위해 한 가지 디자인을 시즌별로 3개만 출시한다. 또한 감상을 위한 미적 가치 및 실제 사용이 편한 기능적 부분이나 오감을 위한 디자인 과정에서의 배려를 아끼지 않았다. 이러한 하이브리드적 하이퀄리티, 실용예술을 추구하는 반초갤러리에는 공항면세점 기념품, 호텔, 대기업 주문 및 대통령 해외순방 각국인사 기념품 등을 위해 원자재 단계부터 기획, 제품 생산, 포장까지 담당해 온 박 대표의 세심한 업무 스타일이 반영되어 있다. 한편 박 대표는 (사)한국칠보공예협회와 연계하여, 정규교육프로그램을 운영하며 자격증과 연계한 직업기술을 전수하고 있다. 또한 5세 이상의 어린이와 학생들에게 교양교육과 체험, 학생들의 진로교육, 디자인 및 운영과 마케팅을 포괄하여 가르치는 창업교육, 취약층과 다문화가정, 외국인 교육, 그리고 산학협력과 평생교육을 위한 특수교육반을 진행하고 있다. 2008년 신지식인 수상, 2009년 서울중소기업청장상, 2010년 지식경제부 표창,을 수상한 박 대표는 칠보를 통한 더 구체적인 문화전승 계획을 갖고 있다고 밝혔다. 지난달에는 중국 작가들을 섭외 차 상해에 다녀왔다는 박 대표는 “반초갤러리를 하이브랜드화 하는 것을 염두에 두고 있다. 그리고 대만, 일본, 중국 등 차 문화를 공유하는 아시아에 진출한 뒤, 미국, 유럽 진출도 고려하고 있다. 보통 가장 한국적인 것을 세계화한다지만, 반대로 가장 세계적인 것이 가장 한국적인 것일 수도 있다. 공예칠보가 어려워서 전승자가 줄고 있지만, 그렇기에 더욱 넓은 세상으로 나가 부활을 꿈꾼다. 그래서 오는 9월 협회를 통해 일본의 한국문화원에서 한국 협회작가 25명을 포함해 80명이 넘는 양국 작가들과 교류전을 준비 중이다”고 전했다. 다반향초라는 의미에 맞게 반초갤러리가 마르지 않는 아이디어와 예술을 소재로 한 문화적 기업의 이상적인 가치를 완성하기를 진심으로 바란다.

Spreading excellence of Korean art enamel to the world
Park is a granddaughter of an art enamel master Kim lee-du. She started to run her art enamel business by opening Geumha which has grown to the current Geumha Chilbo. She mastered the art of glaze and opened Bancho Gallery June this year while serving as the president of the Korea Enameling Association. Art enamel is a high technique craft that makes an ornament by drying gold, silver and copper on glaze and burning it in the temperature of 800℃. The finished ornament gives no color change even after a long time and the glossy surface has naturally encouraged many mothers to give it to their daughter as a gift. You might have seen many of them, either single ornament or attached to a drawer, in costume dramas and their undeniable beauty have lured number of people put them in their collection list. Recently, CEO Park of Geumha Chilbo & Bancho Gallery’s rather practical use of the art is creating a ripple on the Korean accessory market. She combined it with the DIY and fashion trend and is turning the art into a daily craft of people. Art enamel traditionally requires a large furnace to burn the works but Park devised a small one, 30cm in length and breadth, in order to readily deliver the technique to normal people as it only takes around 2 to 10 minutes to burn a work. Some people have become so indulged themselves into it that they have gone as far as to starting a business in earnest. In her Bancho Gallery, everything from design, production, analysis on pros and cons of a work to finish is professionally done under Park’s meticulous instruction.

Bancho Gallery succeeds the tradition 
Park’s love of tea ceremony and the fragrance it gives is wholly melted into her many works including small portable dining tables, tea sets, souvenirs and ornaments to furniture. Park then separates these works into three categories for 1) daily craft and esthetic value to generate extra income 2) collectable 3) cultural value which are released seasonally. Many of the works are currently being supplied to duty free shops, hotels, major companies and government officials for the use of gifts to foreign officials. All products are packaged in a sophisticated design to give additional visual pleasure. Meanwhile, Park, in cooperation with the Korea Enameling Association, is running various pastime and professional courses including a certification course as well as courses for children and students in line with vocational training and special courses for disabled, underprivileged and multi-national families. Thanks to her contribution to the industry and to the society, Park received the 2008 New Intellectuals Awards, the ministerial prize from the Small and Medium Business Administration in 2009 and a citation from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in 2010. “I’m preparing to enter overseas markets starting from China, Taiwan and Japan to the US and Europe. I and the association are also organizing an exchange exhibition at the Korean Cultural Center in Japan September this year and more than 80 artists including 20 member artists of the association are expected to display their works.”
