미디어 기술의 발전은 우리에게 시각적인 즐거움을 선사하고 있다. 특히 최근 각광받고 있는 ‘미디어파사드(Media Facade)’는 건물의 외벽을 디스플레이로 전환함으로써 도시 건축물의 시각적 아름다움뿐 아니라 정보를 전달하는 매개물로서도 사용되며 21세기 건축의 새로운 트렌드로 주목받고 있다.

조명·영상·정보기술을 결합한 뉴미디어 시대의 선두기업

지난 2005년 설립된 지스마트㈜는 ‘미디어파사드’구현의 핵심인 ‘스마트글라스’를 생산하는 전문기업이다. 스마트글라스란 FTO 유리, 레진, LED, 전자제품으로 이뤄진 최첨단 융복합ICT 제품으로서 LED의 전기전자적 특성과 일반적인 유리 제품의 특성을 동시에 가지는 신소재이다.

제품의 특징은 일반적인 전광판과는 다르게 유리와 유리 사이에 LED를 장착하여 겉으로 보이는 투명성을 유지함과 동시에 LED전광판의 효과를 100% 구현하고 있다는 점이다. 기존의 건물 벽에 LED 등의 디스플레이를 부착하여 영상을 구현하던 방식에서 한층 더 나아가 건물의 벽면을 디스플레이용으로 사용할 수 있도록 하는 이 기술은 투명성이 요구되는 공간에서 별도의 부착물 없이 유리면을 통한 영상 및 패턴, 미디어의 구현이 가능하다는 점에서 다양한 활용성이기대된다.

김성수 사장은 “스마트글라스는 건물외관의 커튼월 및 창호, 건물 내 벽면의 파티션 제품뿐만 아니라 투명성이 강조되고 있는 투명엘리베이터, 에스컬레이터, 무빙워크 등에 적용되며 새로운 틈새시장을 만들어내고 있다. 또한 각종 장식장 및 조명으로도 활용할 수 있는 소품을 개발하여 각 가정이나 점포 등에서 고급스러움과 실용성을 갖출 수 있는 제품으로 거듭나고 있다”라고 설명했다.

자체적인 기술개발에 의해 스마트글라스 상용화 제품 생산에 성공한 지스마트는 코스닥 상장법인인 지스마트글로벌㈜에 독점 공급하여 전세계 유통망을 구축하였고, 중국과 일본, 홍콩, 미국 등 해외 현지에서 제품을 판매 및 시공할 수 있는 Joint Venture(JV)을 설립하는 쾌거를 이루었다.

또한 향후 미주를 포함한 유럽, 중동, 아시아 등 다양한 지역에 JV를 신설함으로써 제품 공급을 점차 확산해 나갈 예정이다. 특히 최근 정부의 우수제품전시회에 출품한 ‘지테이너(G-TEINER)’는 기존의 컨테이너 박스 외벽에 LUMI-G를 적용한 제품으로써 손쉽게 차별화된 전시 운영부스를 만들어낼 수 있는 획기적인 방법을 제시하며 큰 호응을 받았다. 지테이너는 어떠한 공간에 설치·운영하더라도 주변의 자연환경과 잘 어우러질 수 있는 친환경 제품으로서 미디어 기술발달의 첨단을 보여주고 있다는 평가를 받고 있다.

독보적인 기술력으로 세계시장 공략의 신호탄을 쏘아올리다

지스마트의 독보적인 기술력과 독창성은 세계적으로 크게 주목받고 있다. 이러한 기술 개발은 이종 소재간의 융·복합 공정으로 원부자재 적용, 세밀한 생산 공정, 특수 전용장비의 도입 등 3가지 요소가 모두 갖추어졌기에 가능했다.

지스마트는 총 21건의 특허출원을 신청했으며, 현재까지 13건의 특허등록이 되어 있으며전 세계 PCT특허 출원을 기반으로 기술력을 보호받고 있다. 김성수 사장은 “LUMI-G는 ‘세계 최초의 전자 건자재’또는 ‘건축 미디어 디스플레이’로 볼 수 있으며, ‘세계 최대 Size의 IoT제품’이기도 하다. 기존에 출시된 유사제품들이 있지만대량생산을 할 수 있는 설비를 갖추지 못하여 소비자의 요구에 즉각적인 대응을 할 수 없거나, 투명성을 확보할 수 없는 제품들이 많다”고 밝혔다.

이러한 강점을 바탕으로 지스마트는 최소 100조원 규모가 예상되는 세계 최대 건자재 시장인 중국을 공략하기 위해 지난 2014년 4월, 중국의 국영 대기업인 CECEP 그룹과 손을 잡고 합작법인 ‘CECEP Brillshow’를 설립했다. 지난해 1개의 생산 공장이 완공되어 10월부터 중국 내 수요에 맞춰 제품을 공급하고 있으며, 향후 4개의 공장을 추가로 지을 예정이다.지스마트는 앞으로도 고객들의 신뢰에 보답하기 위해 끊임없는 품질혁신과 연구개발에 최선의 노력을 다하고자 한다.

‘Gsmart’ leads new media era through integrated lighting, image and IT

Established in 2005, Gsmart is a company producing the smart glass ‘LUMI-G’ which is the key technology for realizing ‘media façade’. It is a cutting edge fusion ICT technology consisting of FTO, resin, LED and electronics. It contains LED’s electric and electronic characters as well as the characters of normal glass products. Developed in 2013, LUMI-G places LED between the glasses to maintain transparency and to realize 100% LED display. The biggest advantage however is that it does not require any type of screens on the wall as the images are directly shot on the wall through the glass. CEO Kim explains “It can also be used for curtains, windows and doors as well as partitions of a building, transparent elevator, escalator, moving walk and even for decorating purpose like lighting.”Gsmart supplies this innovative product exclusively to Gsmart Global in order to secure global distribution network and CEO Kim also launched Joint Venture (JV) in China, Japans, Hong Kong and the US to do overseas sales and construction with the goal of expanding the market to all over the world eventually. Gsmart’s G-TEINERis an eco-friendly product applied with LUMI-G on the outer surface of the existing container box to make a differentiated displaying booth and it attracted a great attention at KOPPEX.

Original technology to pioneer the world

The world is showing great interest in Gsmart’s original technology which has realized integratingthe three elements; materials, precision production process and special equipment. Gsmart so far has applied for a patent for 21 cases and 13 of them have alreadyobtained and registered and protected by PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty). Kim says “I can says that LUMI-G is the world’s first ‘electronic construction material’ or ‘construction media display’ as well as the world’s largest IoT product. There were similar products in the market but they were lack in transparency and unable to mass produce.”CEO Kim saw the largest construction materials market worth KRW 100 trillion in China and already established a joint corporation ‘CECEP Brillshow’ with one of China’s major state enterprise CECEP. A factory already started to produce and supply the goods according to market demand from October and 4 more factories are schedule to open in near future.

Kim says “We will keep exerting our effort in quality and innovation through continuous R&D.”Meanwhile, as part of the co-growth project with local community, Gsmart is about to launch a second division football club within the year. <Power Korea> hopes that Gsmart will grow as a global company over Korea.
