의료 분야에서 있어서 ‘박애(博愛)’라는 명사가 갖는 의미는 매우 크다. 이는 의료철학의 근본이 됨과 동시에 일종의 사명으로 인식되기도 한다. 실천적 행동으로 직결되는 의료현장 속에서 박애정신의 기본 이념을 계승하며 보편적 가치를 전하는 병원이 있다. 바로 평택 지역 최초의 종합병원이자 60여 년의 역사와 전통을 자랑하는 의료법인 참좋은친구 박애병원이 그 주인공이다.

앞선 의술과 정직한 진료로 환자의 생명을 살리고 세상을 이롭게 하는 병원. 박애병원 김병근 병원장(정형외과 전문의)이 해석하는 ‘박애’의 보편적 가치이자 전 직원의 핵심 사명이다. 그는 ‘앞선 의술’과 ‘정직한 진료’라는 두 가지의 신념을 통해 쌓이는 무한한 신뢰야말로 병원의 존립 목적이자 생명 존중의 실천을 가능케 할 가장 큰 원동력이라 강조한다.

1957년 설립된 박애병원은 반세기가 넘는 시간 동안 평택 지역주민의 주치의로서 1년 365일 24시간 문 닫지 않는 병원으로 역할을 다하고 있다. 24시간 응급의료기관 운영, 인공관절 수술 로봇 도입, 질환별 특성화 센터 운영 등을 통해 지역 주민에게 수준 높은 의료서비스를 제공하기 위해 최선을 다하고 있다.

최근 예방의학 발전과 함께 평택 주민의 체계적 건강관리를 위해 300평 규모의 건강증진센터 확장 리뉴얼을 완공했다. 이 가운데 2012년부터 도입한 로봇 인공관절 수술 기법인 로보닥(ROBODOC)시스템은 평택 지역을 넘어 경기 남부 일대에 정평이 나있다.

인공관절 수술은 손상되어 불필요한 뼈를 절삭해 인공관절을 삽입하는 수술로 뼈의 절삭이 수술 완성도의 핵심이다. 로보닥시스템은 올소닥(ORTHODOC)과 로보닥의 두 가지 시스템으로 구성되어 있다.

올소닥은 환자의 관절상태를 정확하게 파악해 매우 섬세하고 구체적인 수술 계획을 수립할 수 있도록 하는 역할을 수행한다. 로보닥은 올소닥에서 계획한 데이터에 따라 사람의 손으로 할 수 없는 정교한 영역까지 0.001%의 오차 없이 손상된 뼈를 제거한다. 김병근 병원장은 "로보닥시스템은 3D Pre-planning, 가상수술(Virtual Surgery), 정확한 절삭이 가능한 진보된 장비로 정밀한 부위의 수술이 가능해 불필요한 뼈의 절삭과 오차를 줄여 부작용을 감소하고 재수술의 가능성을 낮춰주며 다양한 환자에게 최적의 수술 솔루션을 제공하고 있습니다"라고 설명했다.

박애병원은 로보닥시스템을 이용해 경기 남부지역 최초로 무릎인공관절 재치환술을 성공한 바 있다. 독보적인 임상수술 노하우에 최신 의료 장비와 수술 기법을 도입한 성공적인 수술 사례를 연이음에 따라 안전성에 대한 신뢰도 역시 상승하고 있다. 이러한 선진 의료시스템을 본받고자 해외 각국에서 많은 관심을 보이고 있으며, 2012년에는 말레이시아 프린스 코트 메디컬 센터 정형외과 전문의들이 박애병원에 방문해 로봇 인공관절 수술에 참관, 수술 방법과 기술에 대해 전수받아 가기도 했다.

독보적인 인공관절 수술 노하우

현재 의료기술의 발달 및 삶의 질이 높아지면서 평균 수명도 함께 늘어나 ‘건강 100세 시대’를 맞이하게 됐다. 하지만 보통 노년층으로 접어들게 되면 관절의 수명이 다해 결국 수술을 택하는 경우가 많다. 김병근 병원장은 지난 2014년 100세 할머니의 고관절 인공관절 전치환술 성공에 이어 올해 3월에는 98세 할머니의 고관절 부분치환술을 성공적으로 마쳤다. 환자는 상태가 호전되어 약 3주 만에 퇴원했다.

고관절 부분치환술은 부러진 고관절을 새로운 인공 고관절로 교체하는 수술이다. 척추 마취를 통해 하반신 전체를 마취시킨 후 환자를 수면 상태로 유도해 진행되며, 절개하는 부위가 넓어 출혈 및 감염 위험성이 높은 고난이도 수술로 알려져 있다.

김 병원장은 “인공관절 수술의 특성상 60세 이상의 고령자가 대다수를 차지합니다. 또한 80세 이상의 고령자들도 인공관절 수술을 진행하는 케이스가 늘어나고 있습니다. 의료기술의 발전으로 수술 전 영양 상태와 독립적인 생활가능성 여부만 양호하다면 수술이 가능합니다. 특히 90세 이상의 고령 노인들은 기능적인 상태, 영양 상태, 인지 기능, 정서 상태 등의 여러 가지 항목을 토대로 치료 예후를 예측하고 더 안전한 수술을 진행하고 있습니다”라며 현재 인공관절 수술 기법의 발전으로 개인별로 맞춤형 수술이 가능해짐에 따라 초고령자들의 수술 사례 및 안정성을 확보했다고 말했다.

실천적 박애정신을 향한 전 직원들의 사명

지난해 메르스 사태 이후 박애병원에서는 많은 변화가 일어나고 있다. 김병근 병원장은 “‘위기는 곧 기회다’라는 말이 있습니다. 메르스의 중심인 평택 시내 중심가에 위치한 저희 병원으로서는 감염 확산을 막아야 된다는 사명감으로 전 직원들이 자발적으로 합심한 결과 메르스 클린병원이라는 별명을 얻었습니다”라며 당시 상황을 전했다.

메르스라는 커다란 위기를 발판삼아 박애병원은 최근 1년 동안 병원 외래 재배치 및 질환별 전문 센터화를 위해 대대적인 개편을 추진하고 있다. 현재 응급실 리모델링(2015. 6), 소화기내시경센터 확장 개소(2015. 8), 건강증진센터 확장 리뉴얼(2016. 4)을 완료한 상태이며, 올해 상반기에는 수술실 리모델링, 외래 내과/외과 질환별 센터 리모델링이 완공될 예정이다. 또한 병원이 평택 시내 중심가에 위치함에 따라 발생되는 주차문제에 대한 복안으로 주차타워 신축 건립 및 주차대행 서비스를 제공하는 등 불편해소를 위해 다방면으로 모색하고 있다.

Building the best medical services system with advanced medical equipment

‘Bagae’ is the founding philosophy of the Good Samaritan Bagae Hospital. It means ‘love for all people’. Director Kim adoptedit alongside his principle of‘sincere treatment’ and ‘advanced medical practice’. All staff of the hospital bears this philosophy deep in mind and is exerting utmost effect in providing excellent medical and customer services. Established in 1957, the hospital has served the residents for more than half a century on 24/7. Cutting edge medical facilities and equipment are also highly praised not only from residents but the people around the province. The facilities and equipment include 24 A&E (accident & emergency), robotic surgery equipment forartificial joints, diseases care center and the recently built health promotion center (991 square meter). Introduced in 2012, the robotic surgery machine ‘ROBODOC’, in particular, is attracting many patients from all over the province. The robot cuts the damaged or unnecessary part of the bones precisely before inserting artificial joints in order to give a perfect result. The surgery system is divided into ‘ORTHODOC’ and ‘ROBODOC’. The former analyzes the state of the joints and brings up surgery plan in detail. The latter then execute the plan at less than 0.001% error rate which is not possible by human hands. Director Kim explains “ROBODOC realizes 3D pre-planning, virtual surgery and precise cutting which can minimize human mistake as well as side effect. In a word, it is the optimum surgery solution for joints.” Bagae Hospital is the first hospital in the region which succeeded resubstitution operation for artificial knee replacement surgery by using ROBODOC. This achievement of the hospital attracted a great attention from the industry specialistsboth home and abroad and the orthopedic surgeons of Prince Court Medical Center in Malaysia actually paid a visit to learn the advanced technique in 2012.

Unique knowhow in artificial joint operation

Thanks to the advancement of medical science technology, we are living in the age of homo-hundred. Nevertheless, elderly people have less option other than to have a surgery when it comes to joint-related diseases. The presence of Bagae Hospital for this reason is nothing but a welcoming news for them. As to prove this, Director Kim succeeded surgeries for hip joints, artificial joints and joint resubstitution for a 100 year old lady in 2014 and a local resubstitution surgery for a 98 year old lady in March this year. The surgery is known to be very difficult as the doctor has to change the hip joints with artificial ones which should be carried out under anesthetics of the whole lower body of the patient. It can cause bleeding and infection but Kim carried it out meticulously and the patent was able to come back home after 3 weeks. Kim explains “Most of our patients are in their 60s or more. They can have a surgery if they are in a positivestate in relation to nutrition, body function, cognitive function and mental status which we carry out prior to surgery.”

Bagae, as duty to fulfill!

Kim quotes “Opportunities are found in times of crisis” to explain “When the outbreak of MERS hit Korea, Pyeongtaek, where the hospital is located, was the center of the disease. We exerted out utmost effort with the only one goal; to prevent the disease from spreading. As a result, the hospital gained the nickname ‘MERS clean hospital’.”With this feat as springboard, Bagae Hospital improved A&E (Apr, 2015), expanded gastro endoscopy center (Aug, 2015) and health promotion center (Apr. 2016). Currently, the hospital is working on further facilities improvement including surgery rooms and disease center and is planning to build parking tower with valet parking services. Director Kim says “As the local hospital famous for advanced medical equipment and excellent medical services, we will keep providing our very best for the residents and over.”
