동양문화의 정수 통해 깨달음 얻는 행보 이어가
아이들을 위한 천자문 캠프 진행

우리 전통 예술의 하나로 널리 알려진 서예는 각양각색의 글씨체가 어우러진 미적 감각과 고유의 질서를 담은 글귀로 마음을 울린다. 그렇기 때문에 서예를 통해 자신의 예술적 일가를 이룩한 많은 사람들은 자신의 인격 도야와 수행에 노력을 기울이며 마음의 질서를 찾기 위해 노력한다.

조부이신 회와(晦窩) 조병희 선생의 영향으로 禪과 서예의 길 걸어
미얀마와 프랑스 등 다니며 동양의 정신문화의 우수성을 확인 
보장사의 서호 스님은 초등학교를 다닐 때부터 서예에 대한 막연한 애정을 품고 있었다.  조부님인 회와(晦窩) 조병희 선생으로부터 서예를 비롯한 각종 한국문화에 대한 이해를 통해 가풍을 만들어 갔다고 한다. 어릴 때부터 서예를 해왔기 때문인지 마치 운명처럼 자연스럽게 지금의 활동을 이어갈 수 있었던 것이다. 그 또한 조부님의 영향이 매우 컸다고 할 수 있다.

스님의 대표작으로 불리는 ‘성불사의 밤’은 이은상의 시조시와 홍난파 작곡의 가곡으로 널리 알려진 작품이다. 이 역시 조부님이 읊던 시에서 비롯된 것으로 어느 날 문득 풍경소리가 들리던 때 문득 조부님에 대한 생각을 담아 쓰게 된 글이라고 한다. 그래서 조부이신 회와 조병희 선생이 생전에 남긴 문집 회와집(晦窩集)을 한글 본으로 내는 작업도 했다. 한문으로 되어 있던 것을 한글로 번역하는 작업은 쉬운 것이 아니었지만 조부님의 못 다한 뜻을 지금이라도 널리 알리고자 하는 마음으로 작업을 하였다고 한다. 어린시절부터 한문을 좋아했고, 처음에는 지방에서 서예를 배우다가 수원 봉녕사로 출가하면서 소헌(紹軒) 정도준 선생에게서 가르침을 얻게 되었다. 정도준 선생의 지도 아래 수준 높은 서예를 통해 禪과 둘이 아님을 알게 되었으며, 붓을 손에 드는 순간이 행복하다고. 이후 미얀마와 프랑스 선방 등을 다니지 않고 서예를 통해서 꾸준히 수행하고 있다.

6월 말 중국 서예가들과 교류 예정
수원 봉녕사에 묘엄(妙嚴) 큰스님을 은사로 출가하여 강원을 마칠 때쯤 청담큰스님께서 쓰시던 벼루를 주시면서“ 스님들도 한 가지 재주가 있으면  호주머니에 못을 넣어 두는 것과 같아 언젠가 그 못이 주머니를 뚫고 나오는 것처럼 그 재주로 자신도 이롭고 남도 이롭게 하라고 하셨다” 그 말씀을 게기로 다시 붓을 들게 되었고 서울에서 대학원 공부를 마칠 때쯤 스님은 경기도 안성시 보개면 상삼리에 보장사를 세우고 많은 신도들과 함께 불자의 길을 전개해 나가고 있다. 또한 목동청소년문화센터에서 불교 교리강좌를 맡아 진행하면서도 많은 깨달음을 얻었다고 한다. 그리고 “모든 것이 나의 스승이다. 매일 시끄럽게 살면 자연의 소리를 귀 기울여 들을 수 없다. 마당의 꽃을 보고도 깨달음을 얻는 것이 불자의 삶이다. 우리는 아름다운 꽃을 보고 그것에 감탄하지만 그 꽃 한 송이를 피우기 위해 땅 깊숙한 곳까지 뿌리를 내리는 것이다”라고 말했다.

스스로는 “서예에 있어서는 아직 부족함이 많다”고 이야기하는 서호 스님은 반복하며 얻게 되는 수행의 진리를 강조한다. 서호 스님은 “학교를 다닐 때만 해도 같은 글을 세 번 이상 읽지 않는 학생이었는데, 불교는 기본이 3000번이다. 반복을 통해 깨달음이 오는 것이며, 집중력을 갖고 반복하면 안 되는 일이 없다”라고 말한다. ‘청산’, ‘한글반야심경, 행서 반야심경’, ‘전서 반야심경’ 등 다양한 대표작을 남긴 서호 스님은 근묵서학회를 통해 중국 각지의 서예인들과 교류를 이어가고 있다. 6월 26일에 예정된  중국 소흥 지역 전시에서 상해의 예술가들과 함께 양국 간 전통문화 교류의 장을 만들어갈 예정이다.

아이들을 위한 천자문 캠프 진행
작은 깨달음에서 큰 깨달음 얻는 수행 이어갈 것
서호 스님은 우리 전통문화의 정신을 전달하기 위해 5년 전부터 아이들을 위한 캠프를 만들었다. 처음에는 아무 것도 모른 채 들어왔던 아이들이 마치 흰 도화지에 그림을 그리듯, 사자소학(四字小學)을 통해 한자를 익혀가는 모습을 보고 스스로도 대단한 보람을 느꼈다고 말한다. 보장사의 캠프에서는 천자문을 가르치는 과정과 함께 한국불교연합회 어린이지도법사단체에서 교수님들을 파견하여 이로운 말씀을 듣는 시간을 가지며 국악을 배우는 불자 졸업생들을 초빙해 판소리를 듣는 등 우리 아이들이 전통문화에 더욱 가까이 다가가기 위한 행사를 진행했다.

서호 스님은 “매 행사를 끝마칠 때마다 수기를 읽어보면 처음에는 아무 것도 몰랐고 108배를 하기 싫었는데 집에 와서 보니 참 좋았다는 이야기를 들으면 기분이 정말 좋다”고 이야기하였다. 이 밖에도 작년 겨울 엄마들을 위한 캠프를 만들어 ‘화를 다스리는 법’에 대한 특별 강의를 이어간 바 있으며 ‘화내지 않고 사는 것’을 목표로 한다고 말했다. 언뜻 보기에는 가볍고 의미를 알기 어려워 보이는 이 목표는 스스로 생활 속에서 수행을 이어가겠다는 다짐이 담긴 이야기다. “작은 깨달음으로 시작해 큰 깨달음이 되어 가듯이 서예에서도 처음에는 먹물이 진하고 세월이 지나감에 따라 고풍스러운 획을 낼 수 있다”라고 말했다. 아름다운 불가의 진리를 전파하기 위해 노력하는 서호 스님의 행보에 큰 기대를 걸게 되는 것은 이러한 이유 때문일 것이다.

By the influence of his father Jo Byeong-hee, Seoho loved calligraphy since he was a child. His work ‘Night in Sungbul Temple’ became famous for expressing the same titled song - written by Lee Eun-sang and composed by Hong Nan-pa -  in the form of calligraphy. He also translated and published his father’s anthology called Heowajip (father’s nickname) in Korean in order to spread his father’s unfulfilled wish to the world. He loved Chinese character from early years and learned calligraphy. He then became a Buddhist monk, stayed at Bongnyeong Temple in Suwon and was taught by Jeong Do-jun. He came to know that Zen and Two are not through a polished calligraphy and felt much happiness. He then stopped traveling Myanmar and France in seeking of meditation and has focused on calligraphy.

One of his senior monks Chungdam once told him “Benefit yourself and the society with your talent in calligraphy.” Encouraged by this, he picked up the brush again. BY the time he almost finished study at Seoul National University Graduate School, he built Bojang Temple in Sangsam-ri, Bogae-myeon, Anseong City in order to spread Buddha’s teaching to the world. He also said that he realized many things by giving lectures on Buddhism at Mokdong Youth Culture Center. Seoho says “Everything is my teacher. I cannot listen to the sound of nature in a noisy life. It is a Buddhist’s life to find enlightenment from a flower in the garden. We are touched by the flower but the flower roots itself deep under the earth to bloom.” He also emphasizes on repeating as a way to find the truth. He explains “I never read the same text more than three times when I was a student but 3,000 times are regarded as the basic when it comes to Buddhism. We can achieve everything if we do it over and over again.” Seoho’s famous works include ‘Chungsan’, ‘Korean Sutra’, ‘Sutra in Semicursive Style Calligraphy’ and ‘Sutra in Jeongseo Style Calligraphy’. He also is actively exchanging his art with Chinese calligraphers through Geunmook Calligraphy Society. He currently is scheduled to attend an exhibition held in Soheung, China on 26 June.

From small enlightenment to big one
Seoho introduced a camp for children 5 years ago in order to spread the spirit of our traditional culture. He says that he feels rewarded when he sees the children learning Chinese characters by writing each character like drawing a picture. The programs of the camp in Bojang Temple include ‘electronic characters’, ‘lectures from teachers of the Korea Buddhist Association Children’ Guidance Organization’ and ‘Pansori (Korean dramatic song) from Buddhist graduate’. Seoho says “I feel really good when children give feedback saying that they become happy after giving 108 deep bows.” He also introduced a camp for parents last winter and has given lectures on anger management. Seoho adds “Things start from small enlightenment to big one. Likewise, the black ink used in calligraphy is thick at first but it gets archaic while time goes by.” This might be the reason why we have to give support for his beautiful effort in spreading Buddha’s teaching to the world.
