‘Sense network research’ promotes human-centered future technology
Director Prof. Lee Kil-heung of Seoul National University
of Science and Technology Network Research Lab
Sensor network, the core technology to open a new IoT era

The Seoul National University of Science and Technology Network Research Lab is exerting efforts in promoting original technology that can create new values in life through research on cutting edge network technology. Recently, the lab has paid a great attention to ‘sensor network technology’ that is taking the center stage in accordance with the spread of ubiquitous paradigm of human-centered communications. Director Prof. Lee of the lab says “The sensor network technology gathers information in real time and uses it to build network systems that can benefit humanity. Our goal is to realize U Sensor Network which will be attached on various devices to gather helpful information from our daily life.” The lab is consisted of 1 PhD student, 2 master students and 3 interns and their research is mainly focused on sensor network technology and IoT for elderly people and disabled. Lee continues “We combine sensor information with medical systems to check the movement of disabled or to analyze biometrics to check the physical conditions. The technology will greatly help their outdoor activities and provide prompt medical help when they are in emergency.”

Fostering talented students who will lead global network technology
Lee has worked for many years in the field of sensor, ad-hoc communications, internet services, high speed communications network and network management. He listed his name in Marquis Who’s Who for publishing 70 papers on information and communication network including ¡¸A Backup Path Routing for Guaranteeing Bandwidth in Mobile Ad hoc Networks for Multimedia Applications¡¹ released on Springer’s Multimedia Tools and Applications. He started to work as a computer engineering professor at Seoul National University of Science and Technology from 2000 and has fostered many talented computer network specialists. He also has participated numerous related projects and events held by the government and private societies and organizations. Lee says “The recent drop in number of graduate students is quite worrying. Although the number of government-led projects has been increased, the number of researchers has rather decreased which makes co-work not easy. If Korea wants to keep the No.1 status in IT industry in the world, fostering talented students are very important.” Lee also emphasized on the importance of young people to set up their goal to achieve and challenge bravely.
