Total architectural design group that creates cultural space
European practicality to promote the use of every corner of space
CEO Gwak Dae-won of Design Guild
Creating a space that has full of imaginations

Design Guild’s representative work ‘Black House’ located in Yeonnam-dong won a prize at the Korea Wood Design Awards 2015. Design Guild successfully renovated a worn-out 2 storey building into a guest house with steel frames consisting of 4 roofs with guest rooms, an attic, terrace and garden. CEO Gwak studied in the Netherlands and is famous for practical use of space through effective movement lines and the use of basement. Gwak gathered his juniors and pupils in the field and established Design Guild 5 years ago covering the field of CNC process, 3D printing and laser processing. Gwak is talented at executing the uniqueness of the building with minimum design. Also, he is good at using concrete, containers and steel frame in accordance with surrounding environment of the building such as rectangular buildings and telegraph poles within the limited budget. Gwak used to play with empty paper boxes piled up behind his father’s super market since he was a child. When in the Netherlands, he learned how those modern buildings in the country communicate with the public and surrounding envrionment. His experience in the Netherlands as well as his practicality in execution made Gwak always discuss his design ideas with the client and this led Design Guild to generally carry out 6 to 7 projects at the same time. Design Guild attracted a great public attention with a new paradigm of space realized by precise triangular lines at Yeosu Hamel Museum, the curve-lined wobbly bridge in an arboretum in Gapyeong County and the eco and human-friendly hexagonal patterned trail in a family restaurant in Daegu City. Design Guild’s ‘Another Forest’, in particular, won a special prize at Korea Wood Culture Forum 2011 for the realization of a forest. When asked about Design Guild’s architectural philosophy, Gwak said “We just make space for people.” Design Guild recently completed a 2 storey detached house in Ulsan City by connecting second floor rooms with a bridge and the practical use of the garden that can keep privacy. Also, the building made of containers in Yongsan District, Seoul, is boasting horizontal openness so that the space can be used as a mini balcony as well as living space. Meanwhile, Design Guild is making design props made of various materials such as wood, concrete, 3D printing, leather and steel and launched MO DESIGN (MATERIAL ORIENTED DESIGN) to promote the products. In the office building of Design Guild, you can find a gallery, café and design shop and another design workshop called ‘Design Playground’ in Hongdae is used as a space for staff meeting and innovation of the products. Quite currently, Design Guild is planning to build a 13m2 house similar to cocoon house in accordance with increasing demand from single young generations in the market today. As part of the project, Design Guild is building a 3 storey building on a 39m2 land in Yeonnam-dong where numerous single persons can live together independently. When asked about the ideas of the building, Gwak said “Practicality and minimal beauty are the keys over pretension of wealth. In this respect, I can call myself as a village-friendly architect.” Power Korea hopes that CEO Gwak and Design Guild will bring a new paradigm in living space with their practicality and minimalism.
