바오밥 그리다 책’, 그림의 본질로 소통하는 첫 단체전 호평
“미술 고유의 세계관을 향한 열정, 한국적 치유정서로 세계진출 교두보 될 것”

먹과 장지에 현대적 표현주의를 가미한 동양화로 각광받은 예술가이자, 19년 간 청소년과 일반인을 향한 미술교육자로 활약하며 ‘바오밥 그리다 책’을 오픈한 중견화가 김청영 원장. 김 원장은 지난 5월 18일부터 24일까지 인사동 갤러리 가이아에서 ‘그리다, 맘’ 그룹전을 성황리에 개최했다. 개개인의 개성에서 미술의 진정성을 찾고 가족과 소통하는 전시회의 면면과, 한방약재를 활용한 치유를 접목해 세계미술계에 도전할 김 원장의 원대한 도전을 소개해 본다. 

‘인연과 연인’, 가족들과의 교감을 거쳐 한국적 치유정서로 확장
지난 5월 18일부터 7일간, 인사동 갤러리 가이아에서는 초·중등학생과 일반인으로 구성된 아마추어/프로 미술가들이 열정과 재능을 뽐내는 단체전이 호평 속에 진행되었다. 이들을 이끄는 이는 바로 ‘인연과 연인’을 주제로 한국미술의 새로운 대안을 선보인 중견화가이자, 교육자로서 일반인들에게 미술의 가치와 아름다움을 전파해 온 김청영 ‘바오밥 그리다 책’ 원장이다. ‘바오밥 그리다 책’(이하 바오밥 화실)은 장 자끄 상뻬의 ‘꼬마 니꼴라’등 세계의 유명 동화들을 팝업북으로 표현하고, 동화를 재해석해 미술에 접목하는 미술적 상상력이 있는 공간이다. 이 공간에는 동화를 사랑하는 어린 미술가들과 성인이 되어 미술을 전공하거나, 생업에 종사하다 미술을 통한 자기표현을 이뤄가는 회원들이 모였다. 아크릴, 장지에 분채, 실크스크린, 한지에 먹, 종이 위의 파스텔과 수채화, 마카펜 일러스트 등 현실과 비현실 사이의 다양한 소재를 2차원 공간에 담아 4차원 상상의 세계를 끄집어 낸 이번 전시회에서는 프로 미술교육자들도 주목할 만큼 참가자들의 반짝이는 재치와 감수성을 느낄 수 있었다. 단체전 작품을 모으고 선정하는 데는 보통 1년여의 시간이 걸리는데, 이번 단체전에서는 회원들의 열정 덕분에 우수한 작품을 고르는데 6-7개월이라는 짧은 시간으로 충분했다고 한다. 청담동 바오밥 화실 시절에는 작업실이 커서 교육장과 상호소통공간, 전시장을 겸할 수 있었지만, 잠실로 화실을 이전한 후부터는 별도의 갤러리에서 전시회를 갖게 되었다. 

이번 ‘그리다, 맘’ 그룹전에서는 한의사인 김청영 원장의 부군이 전폭적으로 지원하여 성인부 7명, 초·중등부 학생 24명의 작품 90여 점을 전시할 수 있었다. 또한 이번 전시는 ‘그림으로 가족과 소통하기’라는 목표 아래 매년 개최될 단체전의 신호탄이기도 하다. 7일이라는 시간 동안 오후 시간을 내기 힘든 주부들과, 주중에 시간을 내기 어려운 어린 학생들이 로테이션하여 셀프 도슨트(화가가 직접 작품을 설명하는) 형식으로 사랑하는 가족 앞에서 작품세계를 설명하고, 가족들이 피드백을 하는 훈훈한 장면이 속속 눈에 띄었다. 김 원장은 “특히 아버님들이 아이들의 작품에 감동적인 코멘트를 많이 남겨주었다. 미술교육에서 중요한 점은 드로잉, 채색, 공간감 등 각자의 장점에서 시작해 하나의 콘텐츠를 완성한 뒤 장점을 더 접목하여 다른 분야로 연계하는 것이다. 이렇게 소통하는 과정을 익히면 미술로 가족 홈스쿨링과 티칭도 가능하다”고 강조한다. 

김 원장은 앞으로 연 2회 미술로 소통하는 전시를 진행하고, 화풍과 표현방식, 재료를 조화시키는 방법을 가르쳐 학생들 스스로 미술적 표현력을 길러나가 교육 효과를 높이는 것에 기대가 크다. 김 원장은 성인 회원들에게도 색상배합, 콘텐츠 창작, 작품 고유의 세계관을 갖는 방식을 위해 자연물에 자신을 대입할 시 철저한 기질조사가 필요하다는 조언을 하고 격려한다. 화가로서 김 원장은 오는 11월 16일 한국화와 한방재료를 통한 향기치료효과를 접목하여 30-100호수 중심의 작품을 50여 점 소개할 개인전을 준비 중이기도 하다. 조만간 세계무대에서 한국적 치유미술을 선보일 김 원장의 독창성은 시각적 효과에 이어 고유의 향기를 타고 더 널리 전파될 것이다.

‘Encountering & Lover’ spreading a warm message to the world
An art educator and artist Kim Chung-young led the group exhibition recently held at Gallerie Gaia in Insa-dong which lasted for 7 days from 18 May inviting both amateur and professional artists. Kim is the writer of the book Greedabook’ and the one who introduced an alternative way for Korea’s art education with her art subject ‘Encountering & Lovers’ with which she has spread artistic beauty and value to the world. She also is Principal of Baobab Greedabook Art Academy, a magical space where globally famous children’s books are reinterpreted in the form of popup books. Everybody can be a member of the academy as long as they have passion in art. The group exhibition was praised for realizing 2 dimensional art works into an imaginative 4 dimensional world and the exhibited works surprised many appreciators with its creativeness. Kim says “It normally takes about a year to hold a group exhibition. But it only took half a year thanks to our members’ passion and diligence. The exhibition (titled Greeda Mom) was fully supported by Kim’s husband and total of 90 works by 7 adults and 24 elementary and middle school students were displayed. During the exhibition, the artists engaged themselves with their family members and shared stories and opinions about their works. Kim says “Many fathers left valuable comments for their children’s work and it was really impressive. I think taking the most of the artist’s advantage to combine with various other contents is an important element in art education. This is a process of communication and it can be expanded to as far as home schoolings and teachings.” Meanwhile, Kim took the exhibition as a springboard to introduce a new exhibition themed ‘Art as Means of Communication with Family’ in near future. 

When asked about future goals, Kim said “I’m planning to organize ‘communicative exhibition’ twice a year as part of effort to increase student’s artistic technique and expression.” Currently, Kim is working on a solo exhibition (16 November) in which she will display 50 of her mid and larger sized works by combining Korean paintings and herbal medicinal ingredients with intension to make the exhibition as an aroma therapy session.
