Honorary professor Om Sang-mun of Yeungnam University
Suggesting a new paradigm of textile industry with ceramic fiber
Fiber meets ceramic to create ceramic fiber

Ceramics have a long history of living together with our lives. If ceramics were used for household items and art in the past, ceramics today are also used for precision machinery and semiconductor. Recently, the honorary professor Om Sang-mun of Yeungnam University has succeeded in developing ‘ceramic fiber (jewel fiber)’. Om has devoted his whole life to studying ceramic methods. He says “As a material, ceramics can be used in much more areas than we think such as glass, cement, plaster, bricks, tiles and spaceship. The ceramic fiber I’ve recently developed is mixed with jewels and minerals in a certain ratio and purified in high temperature to be printed in fiber. It has natural colors and patterns and I’m planning to develop it as part of the design and culture industries.”

Authority of ceramic research
Om majored in Artistic Crafts and finished a master’s course in Ceramic Design at Hongik University. He worked as a visiting professor at the National Industrial Laboratory and Dean of Graduate School of Art & Design at Yeungnam University. He obtained 9 patents including one for Light Ceramic Stone Production Method (patent No. 071698/March 1994) and another one for Ultra-light & Light Ceramic Power Tile Production Method (No. 071392/ March 1994) before developing ‘ceramic fiber’ in 2016. Om says “We can find ceramics in various knives (blades) in our kitchen, work places and research centers. I took the advantage of its versatility and tried to apply it to many areas. I thought of enamel method which led me to find the ceramic method that can produce fiber by mixing minerals.”

Unlike fiber ink, ceramics need purification process at 1,300°C. This enables the naturally colored and patterned materials to be used for clothes, bags and shoes. Om actually collected chillboseok (stone) in Gangwon Province and extracted Indian pink. He also developed hundreds of enamels with natural colors and patterns. He says “The primary colors like red, blue and yellow lack in liveliness. But the pastel-like colors especially pink give more variety and stories.” Through years of research in rough enamel, Om analyzed natural colors chemically to develop ceramic fiber. Like good design gives happiness and pleasure through shape and functions, the ceramic fiber will create the same effect. It will also contribute to national economy. Om says “Enamel is the best material when it comes to coating technology. The color pink makes millions of colors and the ceramic fiber realizes this vividness of the colors.” Currently, Om is working on applying the ceramic fiber to smart phone cases. He said that it would cut electromagnetic waves of the phone and reduce the heat. <Power Korea> hopes that professor Om will create a new paradigm of textile industry with his development ‘ceramic fiber’.
