Globally renowned marine biotechnologist prepares for 21 century ocean industry

Kim’s splendid achievement in research and thesis to be quoted by many
Thomson Reuters, a major multinational mass media and information firm, announced ‘the world’s most influential scientists’ for those whose thesis has been frequently quoted by many for the last 10 years. The firm appointed Professor Kim along other 19 Korean scientists and Kim is the first scientist in Busan for belonging to the group for his achievement in ‘developing new food and medicine for curing intractable diseases by using unexplored marine biological resources’, ‘optimization of process technology’, ‘commercialization of seaweed and microalgae-based immunity control agent products’ and ‘development of functional food and cosmetics materials’. Since he started to work at Pukyong National University, Kim has published 640 papers (450 SCI) relating to marine bio and functional food on famous academic journals home and abroad, registered 130 patents, and published 60 books (32 including overseas). In recognition of the achievement, Kim received ‘The 60th National Academy of Sciences Awards’ as the first local university professor. He also was chosen as one of the 10 winners of ‘Knowledge Creative Awards, from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning in 2014 as the first professor in Busan, South Gyeongsang Province and Ulsan. Kim opened Marine Biochemical Lab in the university in 1982 and worked as a guest professor at University of Illinois (US) and Memorial University (Canada). He also worked as Director of Korea Institute of Marine Science & Technology Promotion for 10 years from 2004 before being appointed as a special professor of Pukyong National University Specialized Graduate School of Science and Technology Convergence in which he has fostered 71 masters and 33 PhDs. 21 of the students are currently working in various universities in Korea. In addition, Kim founded ‘The Korean Society for Chitin and Chitosan’ and ‘The Korean Society for Marine Biotechnology’ which he served as the first president. 

“Our future depends on marine bio resources”
Kim’s passion in research shows no sign of slowing down. Despite the poor research environment around the time he started to work as a professor, he ardently drove forward his passion. He realized that his areas of research greatly depended on research equipment while taking a PhD course at University of Illinois. With his own and borrowed money, Kim bought 40 research equipment which have been the springboard for achieving great research results. His research on ‘Development of Materials for Food and Medicine by Using Marine Bio Resources’ was chosen for ‘100 Excellent National R&D Results’ in 2010 and he transferred 3 cases of research results on skin whitening, wrinkle improvement and effective materials for atopy to Kolmar. He also developed the technology that can continuously produce chitosan oligosaccharide by using chitosan hydrolase and transferred the technology to a company and created KRW 100 billion worth added value. He is working as a research and advisory professor at Kolmar and actively carrying out researches on developing functional cosmetics, functional food and new bio medicine. Kim says “Our future depends on marine bio resources. 80% of living things on earth live in the sea and 90% of marine resources are yet to be explored.” <Power Korea> sends a message of support to Kim.
