21세기 해양시대를 준비하는 세계적인 해양생명공학자

매년 12월, 스웨덴 스톡홀롬에 전 세계의 이목이 집중될 때면 유독 한국은 초라해진다. 바로 노벨상 때문이다. 일본은 1949년 첫 수상 이래 지난해까지 과학 분야에서만 총 21명의 수상자를 배출했으며, 중국도 최근 급격한 성장세를 보이며 다수의 수상자를 배출하고 있다. 그러나 실망하기는 아직 이르다. 혁혁한 연구 업적과 무수한 성과를 통해 세계적인 과학자 중 하나로 손꼽히는 인물이 우리나라에도 있기 때문이다.

논문 인용수 상위 1%, 눈부신 연구 업적
세계적 학술정보서비스 전문기관인 톰슨 로이터는 지난 10년간의 논문 인용 수 상위 1%에 포함된 이들을 ‘세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 과학자’로 선정해 발표했다. 부경대 과학기술융합전문대학원의 김세권 연구특임교수는 톰슨 로이터에서 선정한 19명의 한국인 과학자 중 한 명으로 부산지역에서는 유일하게 선정된 인물이다. 김세권 교수는 지금까지 미이용 해양생물자원을 이용한 난치성 질환 예방과 치료를 위한 새로운 식의약 소재 개발 및 생산 공정 기술의 최적화, 해조류 및 미세조류를 이용한 면역 조절제 발굴 및 제품화 기술, 기능성 식품 및 화장품 소재개발 등 다양한 연구를 수행해왔다. 그는 부경대 부임 후 36여 년간 해양바이오 및 기능성 식품 분야에서 국내외 유명 학술지에 640여 편(SCI 450여 편)의 논문을 발표했으며, 130여 건의 관련 특허 출원 및 등록, 60여권 (국외:32편)의 전문서적 출간 등 엄청난 부가가치 창출에 기여했다. 이러한 공로를 인정받아 그는 지난해 지방대 교수로는 유일하게 ‘제60회 대한민국학술원상’을 수상했으며, 지난 2014년에는 미래창조과학부가 한국 최고 과학자 10명에게 주는 지식창조대상을 부산·경남·울산지역 대학교수 중 유일하게 받기도 했다. 김세권 교수는 1982년 부경대 응용화학과에 부임하여 해양생화학연구실을 만들었고, 2006년부터 화학과 교수, 미국 일리노이 및 캐나다 메모리얼 대학교 객원교수를 지냈다. 2004년부터 10년간 해양수산부 지정 해양바이오프로세스연구단 단장을 역임했고, 2014년 퇴임 후 과학기술융합전문대학원 해양바이오융합과학과 연구특임교수로서 대학원생 지도 및 연구를 수행하며 석사과정 71명, 박사과정 33명을 배출했으며, 이들 중 21명이 국내외 대학에서 교수로 활동하고 있다. 또한 한국키토산학회와 한국해양바이오학회를 창립하여 초대회장을 역임하기도 했다. 

해양생물자원에서 미래 가능성을 발견하다
김세권 교수가 이처럼 왕성한 활동을 펼칠 수 있었던 것은 그가 다른 누구보다도 연구에 대한 열망이 강했기 때문이었다. 처음 대학에 부임했던 시절, 열악한 연구 환경 속에서도 나름의 성과를 창출하기 위해 동분서주했던 그다. 그러던 와중 미국 일리노이 대학에서 박사후과정을 경험한 그는 자신이 하고자하는 분야가 장비에 따라 연구 성과가 크게 좌우된다는 걸 깨달았다. 이후 김 교수는 빨리 장비를 갖추고 연구에 매진하는 게 더 중요하겠다는 생각에 억대의 사비를 털어 40여종의 연구 장비를 마련했다. 빚까지 내면서 장비를 구입하는 그를 당시 주변 사람들은 이해하지 못했지만, 이는 이후 그가 일궈낸 연구 업적의 훌륭한 밑거름이 되었다. 김 교수의 연구업적은 단지 이론에서 그치는 것이 아니라, 실질적인 기술 개발로도 이어지고 있다. 「해양생물자원을 이용한 식·의약 소재물질 개발」 연구는 ‘2010 국가연구개발 우수성과 100선’에 선정됐으며, 해조류로부터 개발한 피부미백, 주름개선, 아토피 효과 물질에 대한 3건의 연구는 ㈜한국콜마에 기술이전 되기도 했다. 또한 세계 최초로 키토산 가수분해 효소를 이용, 키토산 올리고당을 연속적으로 생산할 수 있는 기술을 개발했으며 이를 기업에 기술이전 해 1000억대의 부가가치를 창출했다. 현재 그는 ㈜한국콜마의 연구자문교수로서 미이용 해양생물자원을 이용한 기능성 화장품, 기능성 식품, 바이오신약 소재에 관한 개발연구에 주력하고 있다. 김 교수는 “해양생물자원에 미래가 있다”고 강조했다. 지구 전체 생물 중 약 80%가 바다에 서식하고 있으며, 90% 이상이 미이용자원이라는 점에서 개발 가능성이 무궁무진하다는 것이다. 대한민국의 과학기술 수준을 한 단계 끌어올리며, 세계 속의 과학기술강국으로의 도약을 이끌고 있는 김세권 교수. 머지않은 미래, 그의 열정과 노력이 전 세계인들에게 깊이 각인될 날이 오리라 기대된다.

Kim’s splendid achievement in research and thesis to be quoted by many
Thomson Reuters, a major multinational mass media and information firm, announced ‘the world’s most influential scientists’ for those whose thesis has been frequently quoted by many for the last 10 years. The firm appointed Professor Kim along other 19 Korean scientists and Kim is the first scientist in Busan for belonging to the group for his achievement in ‘developing new food and medicine for curing intractable diseases by using unexplored marine biological resources’, ‘optimization of process technology’, ‘commercialization of seaweed and microalgae-based immunity control agent products’ and ‘development of functional food and cosmetics materials’. Since he started to work at Pukyong National University, Kim has published 640 papers (450 SCI) relating to marine bio and functional food on famous academic journals home and abroad, registered 130 patents, and published 60 books (32 including overseas). In recognition of the achievement, Kim received ‘The 60th National Academy of Sciences Awards’ as the first local university professor. He also was chosen as one of the 10 winners of ‘Knowledge Creative Awards, from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning in 2014 as the first professor in Busan, South Gyeongsang Province and Ulsan. Kim opened Marine Biochemical Lab in the university in 1982 and worked as a guest professor at University of Illinois (US) and Memorial University (Canada). He also worked as Director of Korea Institute of Marine Science & Technology Promotion for 10 years from 2004 before being appointed as a special professor of Pukyong National University Specialized Graduate School of Science and Technology Convergence in which he has fostered 71 masters and 33 PhDs. 21 of the students are currently working in various universities in Korea. In addition, Kim founded ‘The Korean Society for Chitin and Chitosan’ and ‘The Korean Society for Marine Biotechnology’ which he served as the first president. 

“Our future depends on marine bio resources”
Kim’s passion in research shows no sign of slowing down. Despite the poor research environment around the time he started to work as a professor, he ardently drove forward his passion. He realized that his areas of research greatly depended on research equipment while taking a PhD course at University of Illinois. With his own and borrowed money, Kim bought 40 research equipment which have been the springboard for achieving great research results. His research on ‘Development of Materials for Food and Medicine by Using Marine Bio Resources’ was chosen for ‘100 Excellent National R&D Results’ in 2010 and he transferred 3 cases of research results on skin whitening, wrinkle improvement and effective materials for atopy to Kolmar. He also developed the technology that can continuously produce chitosan oligosaccharide by using chitosan hydrolase and transferred the technology to a company and created KRW 100 billion worth added value. He is working as a research and advisory professor at Kolmar and actively carrying out researches on developing functional cosmetics, functional food and new bio medicine. Kim says “Our future depends on marine bio resources. 80% of living things on earth live in the sea and 90% of marine resources are yet to be explored.” <Power Korea> sends a message of support to Kim.
