Korea’s representative dramatico soprano overwhelms the European stage
Soprano Jeon Ji-young succeeds the line of Korea’s prima donna 
Captivating audience with cool, precise, high pitch and expressive voice

Soprano Jeon Ji-young’s vocal range spans over three octaves. She digests without much difficulty the highest pitch ‘F’ of the song Der Holle Rache Kocht in meinem Herzen in the opera ‘The Magic Flute’. In the age of 12, Jeon was touched when she heard the popera star Chimera’s singing the song in her famous medley ‘The Lost Opera’. She then entered Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and had the debut performance with Deutsche Oper Berlin at National Theater of Hannover in 1999 at the age of 23. Since then, she has performed over 500 times in Europe and grew to be a prima donna. Although she is petite, her voice colors are highly praised for lyrical, dramatical and coloratura edges which made her take the role of the Queen of the Night who threatens Princess Pamina in The Magic Flute. Especially, Jeon’s thunderous charisma and clean and sheer explosive high pitch gave her the honor to perform at 20 most beloved theaters in Europe for more than 20 years. Back in Korea, she collaborated with The Seoul Civic Opera for ‘The Magic Flute’ and with The Korea National Opera for ‘La Boheme’ and ‘The Bat (Die Fledermaus)’. During her 20 years of splendid career as a prima donna, she has overwhelmed audience of the world by taking various leading roles including Musetta, Constanze and Olympia and she has become familiar with standing ovation. 

Becoming like Maria Callas who had sensitivity and concentration in her voice
Jeon graduated from Yonsei University and currently teaches students at Uph University. She says “People in Europe use opera house as a gathering place for hobby and social intercourse. It is more preferred by middle aged people or retirees who usually buy one year membership. I think it is also important to educate children how to enjoy opera with the easy and fun opera like Hensel and Gretel rather than the profound music of Richard Wagner.” Jeon is often regarded as the successor of Jo Su-mi but Jeon’ voice is closer to dramatico than lirico and coloratura. When asked about her favorite role, she named Liu in Turandot and said “Artists are the ones who can be able to digest various roles regardless their own characters. In this respect, they are leading a blessed life. It is specially a privilege for me to take numerous main roles in Europe as an Asian.” Jeon rather focused on technique for Europeans before she has a baby but now she does more on warm and innocent roles as well as harmony of the music on the stage. She adds “Sometimes, I want to be the top at everything I can do. And I have a great interest in sensitivity, splendidness and hair-raising concentration of Maria Callas. Her life was short, tragic and intensive but I want to express all of these elements as long as I can.” Meanwhile, Jeon is scheduled to give a performance in Germany, Japan and a performance and master classes in Busan, Korea this year. <Power Korea> wishes Jeon a continuous success in the second half of the year.
