존재하는 동행관계에 대한 함축성과 시각적 재정립

예술가의 행위를 인간관계와 동일선상에 놓는다면, 감정을 노래하는 개성에 대해 정립하는 과정이라 볼 수 있다. 추상적 감정을 담은 손짓도 누군가에게는 정확한 의사소통을 위한 단어가 되듯, 점찍기처럼 작은 부분에서 시작된 변선영 작가의 콜라주 행위는 그 독창성으로 말미암아 어엿한 세계를 창조하는 행위언어를 시작한다. 재료가 바뀌어도 인간, 만남, 관계라는 확장성의 일관된 은유를 보여준 변 작가의 생명력과 함축성이 담긴 작품들을 만나보자. 

제각각 무수히 찍힌 점(點)들의 대화와 노래, 감정을 보라
지난 5월 ‘우연한 만남 필연적 동행’이라는 초대작품전을 성공적으로 치른 변선영 작가의 작품은 회화, 조각, 소조, 팝 아트를 아우르는 ‘미지의 세계(twilight zone)’에 위치한 무경계성 창조관념, 무의식에서 출발한 탁월한 이야기꾼의 언어로 정의할 수 있다. 이런 언어에 따르면, ‘왜곡’을 추함과 쇠락 대신 ‘아름다운 과장’을 위한 수단으로 사용하고 새로운 것을 표현하기보다는 이미 존재하는 것을 재조명하고 관계 지어주는 행위다. 그래서 변 작가는 입체적인 형태를 만든 뒤 세부묘사를 하는 조각과, 평면을 뚫고 나오는 회화의 파격적인 면을 합쳐 당위성을 도출해낸 종합예술가다. “<동행> 연작 외에도 늘 우연한 만남을 통한 필연적 동행을 하는 인간세계를 일관되게 시도했다. 변 작가는 끊임없는 작업의 몰두에서 결과로 얻어진 수많은 작품들로 인해 혹여 교만하거나 매너리즘에 빠져 자아도취 되는 오류를 범하지 않기 위해 자기 성찰의 시간을 통해 새로운 생각과 새로운 소재를 찾으며 자기 자신의 사고를 재정립하며 자유로운 표현을 펼쳐간다. 신인상주의 쇠라의 과학적인 점묘법을 답습함 아니라 변 작가만의 방법 표현 하고 있는 것이다. 모든 존재의 근원이 점(點)으로부터 시작되었기에 다양한 표현방법으로 묘사하고 제작했던 변 작가는 이제 다시 초심으로 돌아와 자신만 언어를 갖고자하여 독특한 점의 형태를 찾아 소유한 것을 풀어 놓는 것이다. 언어학자들은 말과 글 중 어떤 것이 먼저인가 하는 의문을 꾸준히 제기해 왔는데, 변 작가의 경우는 예술가로서 자신의 언어를 기록할 방법을 의외로 가까이에서 찾아냈다. 숱한 음표가 그려진 딸의 성가악보를 표현의 재료로 삼았다. 그런데 그 점을 찍거나 그리는 대신, 음표와 선 부분을 잘게 찢어 붙이는 것으로 눈에 보이는 흑백의 색상을 표현했으며, 더 깊은 명도단계를 나타내기 위해 악보를 반전(디스토션)해 출력하여 찢은 조각들은 더 순수한 검정, 다양한 무채색을 거쳐 흰색에 이르는 정교함을 구현했다. 색채학 전공자이자 전문 컬러리스트 자격을 가진 변 작가는 색채의 시각적 피로감에 함몰되지 않고, 흑백의 내밀한 대화에 피안(彼岸)의 시각을 가지고 형태의 집합체를 분해하여 화가의 물감으로 삼은 셈이다. 

다양한 재료를 거쳐도 언제나 사람의 동행과 관계에 대한 탐색
다작을 하는 변 작가의 작품에서 더욱 흥미로운 것은 콜라주라는 회화요소로 색상영역을 표현하고, 조각의 마감 처리로 적용하면서 입체성이 가져오는 질감을 강화했다는 점이다. 평생 검정옷을 입기에 100가지나 되는 검정을 육안으로 구분할 능력을 갖춘 민족처럼 말이다. 수많은 누드크로키를 거치고, 이어지는 포즈에 담긴 마임을 포착하고 구현하기 위해 발레 공연장을 다니며 관찰해왔다는 변 작가는 국제어린이양육기구(VOC)의 버려진 아프리칸 아이들의 슬픔과 내면의 아름다움으로부터 흑과 백의 감정을 색으로 해석하기도 했다. 또한 지구상에 존재하는 인간 군상의 관계와 순수한 본질에 대해 수많은 재료로 표현해 왔다. 모두 보관할 수가 없어서 때로는 사진자료로 남긴 뒤 폐기하기도 한다는 그 작품들은 지금까지 서예와 한국화, 유화, 펜화, 파스텔화, 금분 등 다양한 재료를 거쳤지만, 언제나 인체의 구현 후 그들이 2인 이상 만나서 동행하고 움직이는 형상으로 귀결되었다고 한다. 최근에 시도하는 것이 바로 물에 불린 폐지를 미디엄과 섞어 석고보다 더 단단한 형태로 만들고 그 표면에 악보 조각으로 콜라주하거나, 평면을 여러 개 덧씌우거나 요철을 준 변형 캔버스에서 돌출되는 ‘평면입체’ 중부조 형태의 작품들이다. 조명을 비추면 대리석과 같은 견고함, 화강암의 흑백대조와 현무암의 양감을 닮은 이 작품들은 잘라 붙이는 오랜 반복 행위로 형성된 혼합재료의 조화를 보여준다. 변 작가의 <동행시리즈-지금 우리는>은 나무와 두 사람의 형상을 통해 많은 의사표현으로 해석될 여지가 있으며, 로댕의 ‘생각하는 사람’을 패러디한 <상념2>는 애정의 감정구속이 가져온 달콤한 고통처럼 여러 관점에서 인간관계를 생각할 열린 결말을 남긴다. “나의 작품의 특징 중 하나는 ‘비움’이다. 처음에는 아름다운 얼굴을 표현했는데, 사랑을 다 내주고 비어있는 마음에는 다시 채울 수 있는 공간이 있지 않은가. 그래서 전부 파내고 얼굴처럼 보이지 않게 채워 넣어 특정한 인물 대신 감상자가 자신을 대입할 수 있는 열린 속성을 넣은 것이다.” 그래서인지 <너와 나>, <노래하는 삶>에서는 감정 뿐 아니라 행동에서도 해석의 여지가 많다.

인간으로 그려진 입체물이 끌어낸 내면의 신비로운 만남
멀리서 보면 마스크를 새긴 돌처럼 보이고, 가까이서 보면 선과 점의 군집 같은 <아름다운 그대여>, 평면입체가 극대화된 작품 <그날 그 기억> 에서는 과거, 현재, 미래 그리고 주인공(작가자신이거나 관람자)이 꿈꾸는 소망의 노래가 함축적으로 표현 되어 있는 작품이며 손을 붓으로, 악보를 물감처럼 이용한다는 변 작가의 혼합능력 정도를 가늠할 수 있다. 또한 이러한 점묘 콜라주 행위에는 작가가 인간관계에서 받았던 생각과 느낌을 시각언어로 변환하여 담은 삶 속에서의 관계지향적인 담론이 들어 있다. 악보가 작곡자의 악상을 기록하는 수단이기 때문에, 둥근 형태의 집합체를 기록한 악보 조각들은 모든 감성과 행동의 시작이며 무한한 가능성을 숨긴 씨앗처럼 강한 생명력과 이야기의 함축성을 지닌다. 그리고 변 작가는 콜라주가 배경화면을 채우기보다는 작품 안의 주제인 ‘동행자들이 주고받는 언어’에 꼭 필요한 블록 역할을 한다고 강조한다. 이렇게 부여된 소명의식을 가진 소재들이 나타내는 대화와 노래, 감정 표현에 대해 변 작가는 “서로의 관계 속 소통과 이해, 배려라는 신기하고도 따스한 어조로 읽히길 바란다. 반복된 콜라주 파편들은 타자와의 일체감을 이루고 생명력을 얻은 존재다. 그리고 불규칙적인 각 개체들이 외로움과 공허감을 넘어서서 타자와 여러 방식으로 관계를 맺으며 살아간다는 방식을 의미한다” 고 설명했다. 존재에 대한 재정립, 재구성의 방식을 미술 표현 기법에 응용한 창의적인 발상은 다분히 아날로그에 대한 갈망, 과도한 픽셀로 인한 피로감과 반격만은 아닐 것이다. 오히려 이렇듯 회화적 감성과 조각의 입체적 관계를 절충한 작업을 통해, 색상 반전된 장기말 쌍둥이 같은 <동행시리즈I> 조각처럼 인간은 ‘사회적 동물’이라는 광범위한 논점이 인간군상의 상징, 함축 속에 강렬하게 시각화된다. 최소한의 색과 재료에 대한 열린 관념의 시각화. 그렇기에 앞으로도 변 작가가 보여줄, 지속 가능한 인간의 동행이라는 주제는 정녕 믿음직할 것이다.

The song of myriad dots and their conversation
Artist Byun Sun-young successfully held an invitational exhibition ‘Met by chance, Destined to accompany’ last May. Her works span from painting and sculpture to molding and pop art and they can be defined as language of a storyteller that starts from unconsciousness to create the borderlessness located in ‘twilight zone’. The language is to make ‘distortion’ as a means for ‘beautiful exaggeration’ instead of ugliness and deterioration and is to shed new light on things already existing. In this respect, Byun combines 3 dimensional sculptures and 2 dimensional paintings in pursuit of a whole work of art. Apart from her series work ‘Companion’, she depicts the world we live in where ‘Met by chance, Destined to accompany’ is constantly made. Byun never stops reflecting on herself in order not to fall into arrogance and habit but finds unconstrained expression through new thinking and materials. A dot for Byun is the beginning of all things and she uses it to create her own language by finding unique forms of the dot. Byun found inspiration in the musical notes of her daughter’s hymnbook. But instead of drawing or pressing the heads, she cut the heads and the tails of the notes and rearranged them in black and white. She also distorted the score, printed and tore it apart in order to give a gradual degree of deeper brightness from pure black and various achromatic colors to white. Byun’s focus on color is not at all surprising considering the fact that she majored in color and is a certified colorist. Black and white for Byun can mean a visual state of enlightenment while a variety of colors a visual fatigue. 

Ceaseless exploration into companionship and human relations
Byun is a constructive artist. She expresses her color zones by using 2 dimensional collages and strengthens the texture by 3 dimensional sculptures. She has done thousands of nude sketches and watched ballet in order to realize the mime of each pose. She also reinterpreted sadness and inner beauty of the abandoned African children of VOC (Voice of Compassion) into emotional black and white while ceaselessly exploring companionship and human relations. She has used calligraphy, traditional Korean painting, oil painting, pen sketch, pastel and gold for her works but they all came into one form of two people meeting and accompanying at the end. Quite recently, Byun has worked on mixing the wet paper with various mediums to make it harder than plaster and sticking musical notes on the surface to create 3 dimensional forms on a planar surface. The viewers might feel the sense of volume of marble, granite and basalt on her works which actually are created by layered mixed materials. The ‘Companion Series – We Now’, for example, can be seen as expression of opinions of a tree and two people while her other work ‘Thoughts 2’, the parodied work of Rodin’s Thinker, can be interpreted as an expression of sweet painful love that is chained. Byun says “One of the characters of my works is ‘emptying’. The heart emptied by giving out all its love is a space that can be filled up with something again. So I dug it out and filled it up so that the viewers can apply their own selves.” In this respect, her works ‘You and Me’ and ‘Life that Sings’ can be interpreted in terms of both emotion and action.

Byun’s other works include ‘Beautiful You’, the masked stone when seeing in distance and a group of lines and dots in close proximity, and ‘The Day The Memory’, the work of maximized 3 dimensional forms on plane surface which contains Byun’s past, present and future as well as her song of hope. Through these works we can see Byun’s ability to use her hands like brush and musical notes like paints to create a work. According to Byun, the musical notes are the beginning of all sensitivities and actions and contain the seeds that have limitless possibility of life and its story. And the collage functions as a block that is needed for ‘the language between two people’. Byun explains “I hope my works are a means of communication, understanding and consideration. The collage I used gives harmony and life between people and it is a way of overcoming solitude and emptiness of life.” Byun’s ‘Companion Series I’ is a sculpture that looks like reversed color of twin horses in oriental chess. Byun visualized all forms of human beings as social animals into symbols and implications. It is no doubt that Byun’s use of minimal colors and materials and the visualization of open conceptions will continue to show us companionship between people.
