하늘이 사랑한 악기 만돌린과 우쿨렐레의 체계적 대중화

신화 속 류트는 신이 빚어 하늘의 도움으로 영근 과일을 닮았다고 한다. 그리고 그 류트를 꼭 닮은 현악기인 만돌린은 바로크 시대 이전부터 이탈리아 고전음악을 풍성하게 일군 아기자기한 악기이다. 영화와 협주곡으로 마니아들의 사랑을 받는 만돌린, 그리고 하와이의 경쾌한 리듬 음악과 팝 음악에 이르기까지 감초 역할을 하는 우쿨렐레로 한일 양국 간의 음악교류, 그리고 제대로 된 학과 창설을 위해 달리는 국내 만돌린 박사 1호 이국표 음악감독을 만나본다. 

노래하는 악기라 칭하는 만돌린과 우쿨렐레의 매력
2002년 3월 출범한 루야만돌린 오케스트라를 비롯해 하랑만돌린 챔버, 드림만돌린 챔버, 자운영만돌린 챔버 등을 이끌며 17세기 이전부터 종주국 이탈리아 음악인들의 사랑을 듬뿍 받아온 만돌린의 대중화에 기여해 온 이국표 음악감독은 초등학교 2학년 때 교회 크리스마스 뮤지컬의 주역으로 발탁되어 노래와 연기를 선보이고, 독학으로 풍금을 시작하며 음악과 인연을 맺었다. 특별히 음악레슨을 받지 못했지만 항상 음악에서 만점을 받는 학생이던 이 감독은 중학생 때 전교생 조회 시간에 지휘를 하고, 합창대회 때도 지휘를 맡았다. 원래 사범대학 가정교육 전공으로 사회에 첫 발을 디뎠지만, 1990년 충현교회에서 만돌린 멤버를 모집하면서 만돌린을 접하게 되었다. 호산나만돌린오케스트라에서도 10년 동안 연주활동을 하고 1999년부터 강사를 시작했다. 그리고 만 50세의 늦은 나이에 백석대 대학원에 들어가 음악교육을 전공하고 석사학위를 취득했다. 이후 이탈리아에서 만돌린과 지휘과정을 공부하고 만돌린으로 석·박사 학위를 취득하게 된다. 만학도로 시작해 한국에서 이탈리아 유학파이자 만돌린 박사로는 1호가 된 것이다. 김종필 전 총리의 취미인 것으로 유명했던 만돌린은 4라인이 겹을 이룬 8현으로 된 작은 현악기이다. 그리고 인간의 성대발성을 연상케 하는 독특한 트레몰로 주법으로 아름답고 사랑스러운 서정미를 표현하고 있으며 모차르트의 오페라 <돈 조반니>, 비발디의 <두 대의 만돌린을 위한 협주곡 G장조>를 통해 국내에서도 꾸준한 관심을 받고 있다. 또한 이 감독은 2007년경 우쿨렐레를 시작하여 한국 우쿨렐레 앙상블 활동과 문화센터 우쿨렐레반, 솔빛지역 아동센터의 아이들을 지도하고 연주 봉사활동에 몸이 열 개라도 모자랄 스케줄을 소화하고 있다. 포르투갈에서 하와이로 전해진 우쿨렐레는 ‘미니 4현 기타’라는 별명이 입증하듯, 코드의 스트로크 기법으로 만드는 리듬감이 일품인데다 휴대성과 보관이 편한 덕분에 대중화 되는 좋은 악기이다. 이 감독은 지난 2012년 압구정동/홍대 롯데시네마에서 상영된 <우쿨렐레 사랑 모임>이라는 독립 다큐영화에 주인공으로 출연해 우쿨렐레가 지닌 아기자기한 매력을 선보여 호평을 받기도 했다.

재능기부와 대중화 노력, 이웃나라 음악인들과 깊은 교류 
만돌린은 현악기가 비올라와 바이올린, 첼로 등으로 구분되듯 음역에 따라 만돌린, 만돌라, 만도론첼로, 만도로네 콘트라베이스로 이루어져 더욱 심오한 솔로와 듀엣, 트리오, 챔버, 앙상블, 오케스트라 구성이 가능하다. 4개의 만돌린 팀을 가르치고 각각의 팀원들을 이끌고  주로 소년원, 요양원, 양로원, 병원, 구치소, 장애인 시설 등을 찾아 연주 재능기부에 여념이 없는 이 감독은, 사람들에게 음악을 통해 희노애락의 감정을 공유하고 공감하는 것이 중요하다고 말한다. 또한 재일교포 연주자를 통해 연이 닿은 일본의 그룹 다마만돌린팀, OST만돌린팀, 오야지만돌린팀과 한,일 만돌린 교류연주회 등 해외 아티스트들과의 자매결연 공연에도 충실하다. 일본교회와 공연장에서 이미 수차례의 연주로 선교활동을 하기도 했다.

“작년 12월에는 일본에서 최소 50년 이상 만돌린을 연주한 전문가들로 구성된 우수한 실력파들과 합동공연을 했었다. 일본은 초등학교의 방과 후 수업과 동아리 등으로 탄탄하고 체계적으로 만돌린을 배울 수 있어 한번 배우면 평생 취미로 연주하거나, 충분히 연습하면 전문 공연자가 될 수 있는 환경이다” 제자들과 함께 한국의 전통 음악, 드라마 OST의 만돌린 편곡 버전을 음향 공명설계가 잘 되어 있는 일본의 공연장에서 연주하여, 객석을 감동의 도가니로 만든 벅찬 경험도 했다. 이를 계기로 이 감독은 한국에서도 음악 전문공연장을 설계할 때 음향전문가와 함께 하여, 연주자의 음악을 객석에서 충분히 느낄 수 있게 되길 바란다고 덧붙였다. 또한 여성 음악인으로서, 이탈리아 유학 시절 성가대와 오케스트라의 여성 지휘자들을 보며 깊은 인상을 받았으며 머지않아 우리나라에서도 여성 음악감독과 지휘자들이 많이 배출될 긍정적인 미래를 기대한다고 밝혔다. 

누구나 악기를 취미 삼는 나라, 만돌린의 정규 교육과정 신설 이뤄지길
“만돌린과 우쿨렐레로 감정의 희로애락을 풀어내고, 이 음악을 들은 사람들이 위안을 받거나 선하고 긍정적으로 마음이 바뀌는 것을 자주 목격했다. 만돌린은 클래식에 많이 등장하지만, 밴조와 함께 미국 컨트리음악 블루그래스에도 자주 곁들이는 악기이다. 흔히 클래식은 고상하고 지루하다고 하지만 과거에는 뱃노래나 무도회에서 연주되던 대중음악이었다. 그리고 한때 천대받던 재즈는 체계화되고 세계로 퍼지면서 이제 수준 높은 음악 대우를 받게 됐다” 장르를 초월하여 감수성에 좋은 음악을 골라 듣고 연주하는 것을 삶이자 생활의 전부로 삼고 있다는 이 감독의 설명이다. 이 감독은 음악 교육자로서 “무대에서 연주한다는 것은 스스로를 뽐내기 위함보다, 악기연주를 통해 이야기하고 , 관객들과 감정을 공유하는 과정을 통해 전율을 느끼고, 그 감정이 관객에게 전해지는 것”임을 늘 제자들에게 강조한다고 말한다. 또한 이 감독은 이러한 경지에 오르기를 바라는 연주자들에게, 연주 실력을 늘리기 위해서는 수많은 연습과 자기 연주를 녹음해 피드백하는 과정을 거쳐야 비로소 무대에 오를 수 있다고 전한다. 몇년전 일본에서 헐리웃 영화 <코렐리의 만돌린>이 방영되면서 대학에 정규 학과가 생겨났다, 한국의 경우 만돌린 협회에서 1997년부터 지금까지 연 1회 전국 만돌린페스티벌을 개최하여, 밝고 감성적인 음색을 지닌 만돌린에 대한 관심이 점점 커져가고 있지만 아쉽게도 아직 전문학과는 없는 상황이다. 이 감독은 언젠가 대학에 만돌린 정규학과가 신설되면, 국내 1호 만돌린 박사이기도 한 전공을 살려 교수로서 제자들을 양성하는 것이 오랜 소망이라고 한다. 100세 시대를 맞이하여 대중들이 1인 1악기를 보유하고, 100살까지 하나 이상의 악기를 연주하는 세상이 오길 바라며, 아울러 만돌린과 우쿨렐레를 통해 음악이라는 아름다운 이야기를 전하고 사람들의 마음을 밝음으로 채워가는 이 감독의 작지만 강한 바람이 반드시 이루어지기를 함께 바래본다.

Introducing the charm of mandolin and ukulele
Mandolinist Lee founded Lujah Mandolin Orchestra in March 2003 and has contributed to popularizing the instrument by running various other chambers like Harang Mandolin Chamber, Dream Mandolin Chamber and Jawunyoung Mandolin Chamber. Lee was selected as the main actress for a Christmas musical when she was a second grade elementary student and started to learn to play the reed organ by herself. She always got a perfect score in music exams, became the conductor of morning assembly of a school as well as many choir competitions when in middle school. Although she majored in Home Training, she started to play the mandolin in ernest by a chance when she went to Chunghyeon Church in 1990. Soon she moved to Hosanna Mandolin Orchestra in which she played for 10 years and started to teach people from 1999. At the age of 50, she entered Graduate School of Baekseok University to study music education and obtained a master's degree. Her passion did not stop there. She moved to Italy to take a conductor's course for mandolin and obtained both master's and doctoral degrees to be the first Korean doctor of mandolin. The instrument has 8 strings in total with 2 strings working as a pair. Its unique tremolo style makes people feel beautiful and emotional and it is better known to Korea through Mozart's Don Giovanni and Vivaldi's Concerto for 2 Mandolines in G major. Lee also started playing the ukulele from 2007 and is actively engaging in Korea Ukulele Ensemble and free teaching and performance for underprivileged neighbors. Introduced from Portugal to Hawaii, its small size and rhythmic stroke style make it easy to carry and play. She demonstrated its charm on the independent movie 'Ukulele Lover Club' screening at Lotte Cinema in Apgujeong-dong and Hongdae. 

Lee promotes international exchange with neighboring countries
Mandolin is divided into mandolin, mandola, mandoloncello and mandolone contrabass according to the range of the musical note. Thanks to this variety, you can form a duet, trio, chamber, ensemble and orchestra. Lee alone runs 4 mandolin teams and gives performance for physically and socially underprivileged people to share four feelings of joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure while actively engaging in exchange with Japanese Dama Mandolin Team, OST Mandolin Team and Oyagi Mandolin Team. Lee and the teams already have given numerous performance at churches and concert halls in Japan. Lee says "We performed with Japanese mandolin players who have played the instrument more than 50 years. Many Japanese students learn mandolin for hobby and some of them actually become the players when they grow up." Lee also experienced Japan's excellent sound system of concert halls and hoped that Korea would follow suit while emphasizing on more presence of female conductors like many European countries.

Lee continues "I has observed many people overcoming emotional burden and depression by playing the mandolin. The instrument is not only used for classical music but also alongside the banjo in country music. So people can be easily familiar with the instrument once they know of it. A player standing on the stage means to share the story, feeling and thrill with the audience over just show off of one's technique. I hope more people will have the pleasure of listening and playing the instrument." Lee also mentioned about the regular university level course for mandolin in Japan which was encouraged by the film 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' and regretted the fact that Korea still has a long way to go except the Korea Mandolin Association's holding the 1st National Mandolin Festival in 1997. It is Lee's goal to be the first mandolin professor of Korea and she wants to realize 'one person for one musical instrument' in the age of homo-hundred.
