재능 나눔으로 세상을 채우는 아름다운 선율과 앙상블

클래식 음악에 대한 이미지는 모차르트와 살리에르의 관계처럼 넘을 수 없는 벽이나 유리천장, 문턱 높은 요소들로 설명되곤 한다. 그럼에도 ‘노력은 배신하지 않는다’는 말처럼, 한계를 넘어 아름다운 선율을 만들고, 더 많은 사람들의 문화적 감각을 풍요롭게 하는데 자신의 재능을 아낌없이 펼치는 데서 행복을 느끼는 사람들이 있다. 더 스테이지앙상블은 음악 전공자들과 음악을 사랑하는 연주지망생들이 모여 그 행복과 기쁨을 공유하는 곳이다. 

25인의 칸타빌레, 자신의 분신인 악기로 노래하는 스테이지
서울대 음대 및 동 대학원, 이탈리아 L’aquila 국립아카데미 최고연주자과정을 이수했으며 서울플루트앙상블의 창단 멤버이자, 강남대와 선화예술학교에 출강하는 김정아 플루리스트는 2013년 4월 창단한 더 스테이지앙상블의 예술 감독직을 수행하고 있다. 서울예고, 서울대 음대 동문들과 서울빈첸트앙상블을 결성해 성당, 지역 행사에 연주 재능기부 활동을 하던 김 감독은 2002년 가족들과 미국으로 떠나 2년 간 한국 문화원을 중심으로 음악감독, 지휘자로 활동했으며 싱가폴로 이주하여 한인들의 터전에서 청소년오케스트라 감독, 한국 음악방송 진행과 연주를 병행하고 2013년 귀국한다. 또한 2009년에는 클래식 스타 리처드 용재 오닐이 출연해 화제가 된 KBS다큐멘터리 <세종로 81번지 앙상블>의 주인공들인 세종나눔앙상블 오케스트라 창단과정을 접한 뒤, 그들의 자발적인 땀방울에 감동받아 제작 과정에서 주 1회 강습을 한 김 감독은 이후에도 인연을 이어간다. 귀국 후, 김 감독은 오디션을 거쳐 프로와 아마추어들의 열정이 공존하는 더 스테이지앙상블을 조직하게 된다. 그렇게 앙상블의 프로 정예멤버와 학위를 소지한 음악 제자들, 그리고 강남대 콘서바토리 앙상블 클래스 전공자들로 이루어진 25인의 연주자들은 문화 향유가 어려운 병원, 공공시설의 이웃들을 찾아가 대중적인 클래식을 전파하는 메신저 역할을 해 왔다. 앙상블 단원들은 박물관과 기념관, 갤러리 행사나 오픈 같은 소규모 공연을 위한 유닛형태의 관악, 현악 파트 멤버들로 나뉘어져 매주 연습하고, 연 2회 정기연주와 재능기부 식 연주 일정을 의욕적으로 이끌어가고 있다. 김 감독은 “단원들은 앙상블의 주역이라는 자부심이 있다. 전공자들의 잘 짜인 실력, 하나라도 더 배우고 연습하는데서 기쁨을 느끼는 아마추어 연주자들이 인격적으로 서로 공감, 조화하고 악기로 이룰 수 있는 최대치의 화음을 만들어내고 있다”며 그들의 순수한 열의에 자부심을 보였다.

쌍둥이 자매와의 ‘플루트 in 하우스’, 앙상블로 시작된 음악여정
부모 형제가 모두 음악 애호가인 환경에서 자랄 경우, 대부분 평생 청자나 연주자로 음악을 벗 삼아 살게 된다. 4자매가 모두 음악을 한 김 감독 역시 쌍둥이 자매이자 2014년부터 앙상블에서 협연하고 있는 김나원 교수와 플루트를 취미로 시작했다고 한다. 저음의 청아한 화음이 좋았고, 그래서 친구들과 앙상블을 만들어 연습하는 즐거움을 알았던 두 사람은 입시전쟁에서 단 2명뿐인 서울대 음대 플루트전공자 입학자격을 따내기 위해, 혹독한 연주 연습 끝에 둘 다 합격해 매체의 주목을 받은 적도 있었다. 방 벽을 사이에 둔 ‘혈육 라이벌’과의 치열한 경쟁에서 살아남는데서 시작되어 유학과 학위 이수, 연주회 활동 등 음악적으로 충실한 삶을 살아 왔지만, 한국을 떠났던 2002년과 돌아온 2013년의 환경은 많이 달랐다고 한다. “생활 속에서 앙상블 오케스트라를 쉽게 접할 수 있는 일본과 달리, 한국에서는 지방대 클래식음악 학과가 통·폐합되는 등 클래식 저변이 점점 좁아지고 있었다” 김연아의 피겨음악을 비롯해서 최근에는 조성진의 피아노 연주앨범이 대중음악 음반차트에 랭크되는 한국 상황이었지만, 정작 교육계에서는 비용 절감 차 음대 인원을 줄이고, 나라 안에서는 세월호 추모 분위기로 연주회를 자제하는 등 연주자들에게는 혹한이 이어지고 있었던 것이다. 더 스테이지앙상블의 결성과 많은 공연을 통해 이러한 상황을 타개하고자 했다는 김 감독은 앞으로도 클래식 애호가를 끌어들이기 위해서는 대중화, 문화공유의 확대에 대한 인식제고가 필요하다고 언급한다. 

“솔로에서 앙상블로, 누구에게나 각자의 Opus NO.1이 있다”
김 감독은 현재 강남대학교, 선화예술학교에서 음악이론과 기악을 가르치는 교수이기도 하다. 미국에 가족들을 두고 귀국한 플루리스트인 김 감독을 원하는 곳이 많았기 때문이다. 강단에서 후학들의 창의성과 연주 실력을 길러주는 것에 보람을 느끼지만, 지금 당장 뉴욕, 파리의 세계 1,2위 음악원에 가도 될 수준의 아이들이 엄청난 실기경쟁을 뚫고 대학에 진학하면 취업 전쟁을 준비하며 연습시간이 줄게 되는 우리의 입시 현실에는 아쉬움을 느낀다고 한다. “학과가 줄어드는 곳도 있지만, 전국 음대 졸업생들이 단 2명 충원하는 오케스트라 단원이 되기 위해 경쟁하는 경우도 있다. 또 성별의 불균형도 있지만, 앞으로는 여성 지휘자들의 비중이 점점 높아지리라 기대한다” 김 감독은 더 스테이지앙상블의 모토를 단원들의 열정적인 연주로 목표한 만큼, 앞으로 앙상블을 더 키워서 좋은 연주와 공연, 단원들의 실력향상으로 연결할 각오를 다지고 있다. 또한 김 감독은 전국의 다양한 아리랑을 메들리로 묶어 편곡한 테마를 연주했던, 2015년 오스트리아 비엔나의 바로크잘(Barocksaal)에서 열린 한국/오스트리아 문화교류협회 초청 공연에서의 경험을 지금도 생생하게 기억하고 있다. “티타임 콘서트, 찾아가는 음악회 같은 작은 음악회에서의 보람도 크지만, 아침부터 밤까지 연습한 아리랑 메들리를 오스트리아 관객들이 기립박수로 환호해 주고 곡에 대해 물어 보았을 때의 눈물겨운 감동을 잊을 수 없었다” 김 감독은 이렇게 일사불란한 연주에 참여한 단원들에게도 애정을 보인다. “콘서바토리에는 60대에 음악전공의 꿈을 이룬 분도, 외로움과 우울증을 치유한 분도, 고교만 졸업하고 자식들을 다 키운 뒤 만학의 꿈을 키운 분도 계시다. 늘 누군가의 아내, 엄마, 아줌마라 불렸는데 앙상블 단원이 된 후 삶의 활력소를 얻어 더 열심히 연주하신다는 것이다. 음악감독 일을 하면서 마음고생을 할 때, 위로와 격려로 지탱해 준 단원들에게 감사를 보낸다” 삶의 새로운 ‘Opus NO.1’을 열어주는 앙상블을 통해, 음악 지도자와 예술감독으로 세상에 재능을 환원하는 여성 리더, 김정아 감독의 멋진 행보를 꾸준히 응원해 본다.

Cantabile of 25 musicians fills the stage with wonder
Kim finished both degree and master's courses at Seoul National University School of Music which followed by completion of the master performance course at Italia L'aquila. She is a member of Seoul Flute Ensemble and founded The Stage Ensemble in April 2013 while giving lectures at Kangnam University and Sunhwa Art School. She also founded Seoul Vincent Ensemble with her alumni of Seoul Arts High School and Seoul National University in order to give free performance for local communities. She then went to the US with her family and spent 2 years as a musical director and conductor before moving to Singapore in which she acted as a musical director of a Korean youth orchestra while hosting a music broadcasting at the same time. In 2009, she was touched by the founding members of Sejong Nanum Ensemble Orchestra, which was broadcast on KBS documentary 'Sejongro 81 Ensemble' and provided a weekly lecture for them during the founding process. She came back to Korea in 2013 and founded The Stage Ensemble by gathering 25 professionals and amateur musicians from her university, pupils and members of Kangnam University Conservatory Ensemble and the ensemble has contributed to spreading classical music to various culturally underprivileged hospitals and social facilities. The members practice on weekly basis and hold regular performance twice a year. Director Kim says "All of our members are passionate and find great pleasure in practice and execution in harmony and communication."

The musical journey starting with 'Flute in House’
Kim is one of 4 sisters who all are into music. She started her musical career by playing the flute with her twin sister (now a professor) as hobby. They gradually grew up their passion in music and practiced really hard and passed the entrance exam of Seoul National University which selected only two students for the major. Kim says "Generally speaking, Japanese people enjoy classical music in daily life while the related departments of local universities in Korea experienced either closure or merged. Although the recent boom in classical music in Korea thanks to the pianist Cho Seong-jin but the situation in education has not much improved. I think increasing public recognition about classical music is much needed and we, The Stage Ensemble, will take a great part in promoting it nationwide."

"From solo to ensemble, everybody has Opus NO.1“
Kim is currently a professor at Kangnam University and a teacher at Sunhwa Arts School. Kim regrets that fact that many globally talented Korean students, who are second to none in terms of technique and creativity, have to go through harsh university entrance exams and getting a job in the field after graduation. Kim explains "The Korean classical music market provides only limited spaces for students. Some of orchestras, for example, have place for only 2 new persons. It is also needed that more female conductors will have strong presence in the field." When asked about a memorable performance, Kim mentioned the invitational performance by the Korea-Austria Culture Exchange Association held at Barocksaal, Vienna, Austria in 2015 where they played Arirang (Korean folk song) in medley. Kim added "I will never forget the standing ovation after we finished playing Arirang. This was possible thanks to passion of each member of The Stage Ensemble. Some of our members are over 60s, high school graduate parents and those who use music for curing loneliness and depression. They were usually called someone's wife, mother and such but they are now musicians and they regained vitality of their lives. I feel really worth whenever thinking about what we have gone through and achieved and I would like to show my sincere gratitude to my members." Director Kim concluded that The Stage Ensemble would open a new Opus NO.1 for life and would do her utmost effort in spreading classical music to more people.
