CEO Jaegeun Ryu of EiE(Excellence in English) rather had a sense of helplessness by observing Korean students not able to say even a word in English when tens of thousands of football enthusiasts visited Korea to be part of the 2002 FIFA World Cup fever. Ryu felt a great responsibility as he and his colleagues at that time were ambitious to make it possible that students become competent in English without necessarily going abroad to study. Ryu was Vice CEO and Head of Business Department of Edubox, the one who introduced EBY Talking Club that created a sensation in the Korean English education market for its speaking-driven curriculum with the number of branches reaching over 600 nationwide, creating annual revenue of KRW 27 billion. While enjoying the success however, the government started to reform the specialized high school examination system and Ryu went deeper in thought; why students are eager to enter the school? Do the overused words ‘global talent’ imply only the competency in English or the overall capability in logical thinking, expressiveness, analysis and negotiation? Igniting his talent of bringing up witty ideas, Ryu wrote a letter and sent it the Korea University Institute of Foreign Language Studies. Soon after, the institute replied with encouragement and showed a strong will of cooperation in development and supervision of the EiE Program.

The EiE Program is designed based on ‘debate capability’ and ‘essay writing’ which are backed up by 3 stage curriculum of ‘Input’, ‘Intake’ and ‘Output’. It aims to promote self-directed learning, storytelling skills and presentation & discussion ability. The importance of phonics also is particularly emphasized on the National EiE English Speech Contest Day held at Korea University Inchon Memorial Hall. Ryu explains “EiE Program helps students reach to their goals through the process of understanding phonics and spelling - vocabulary - sentence – storytelling – presentation – discussion – persuasion – debate.” EiE currently is regarded as one of a kind debate & essay based English learning system over the existing teaching and coaching-driven one in the market. Thanks to this innovation, EiE(Excellence in English) won the National Product Quality Awards in the educational contents category and the Korea Education Industrial Awards in the English education category. Ryu continues “This year, Education Offices have increased the performance assessment rate up to 50% and the compulsory speaking test by 10%. I personally believe that this is the best thing the Education Office has done so far in the history of Korean English education and it is well matched with our educational policy. You can find the students of EiE(Excellence in English) not at class rooms but at labs gathering discussion subjects and materials (Input) in preparation for debate and presentation. Teachers of the institute only play the supporting role. This means that students are the ones who lead the class (self-directed learning) and through this they can fully digest the EiE Program.” 

Active communication with school parents
In order to maintain the quality of the EiE Program, Ryu calls branch managers to the head office every third week of the month to keep them capable in marketing, management strategy and information gathering & analysis as well as the contents of the EiE Program. Also, Ryu emphasizes on parents roles in choosing the right institute for their children through active research and communication. EiE(Excellence in English) opened its door in 2011 and has much grown to run 180 branches nationwide today. As a leading English education provider in Korea, the institute aims to open 250 branches in total by 2017. Ryu adds “I’ve never forgot my responsibility which I felt during the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Sticking to my guns on this, I and the teachers of EiE(Excellence in English) will exert our utmost effort in fostering English prodigies.”
