Park draws productive diplomatic coup through economic cooperation and personal exchange
Park strengthens substantive cooperation and personal exchange with Mongolia
President Park had a summit talk with Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj on 19 May at the Blue House during his official visit to S. Korea on 18-20 May. The two leaders discussed on substantive cooperation, the situation on the Korean Peninsula and global cooperation. They voiced together that the two countries had complementary economic structure and pursued peace in Northeast Asia, adding that, last year marked the 25th anniversary of diplomatic ties and they would promote cooperation potentials and strengthen comprehensive partnership. The main areas of cooperation include natural resources, infrastructure, IT, energy, environment and creative economy. Both countries have already signed numerous MOUs in these areas. Elbegdorj showed his will to expand cooperation to solar energy, wind power, coals and methane gas which are abundant in Mongolia and also showed his gratitude to the Korean government’s support for the afforestation project to prevent desertification in Mongolia. Both leaders also agreed to activate personal and cultural exchange and international cooperation as well as support for ASEM which is held in July this year in Mongolia.
Park establishes a foothold for energy and traffic infrastructure with Indonesia
President Park held a summit talk with Indonesian President Joko Widodo on 16 May at the Blue House. The two leaders had a joint news conference and signed 11 MOUs worth USD 6.7B in the areas of energy and traffic infrastructure and new growth industries in Indonesia. Park emphasized on implementation of Korea-ASEAN FTA in order to promote trade and investment between S. Korea and Indonesia and showed her will to expand the cooperation to personal and cultural exchange and national security and defense industries. Park also mentioned about Korea-ASEAN Cultural Center which will be opening next year in Busan and the center would play a pivotal role to spread Indonesian culture to Korea. Park continued that both leaders would strengthen cooperation in denuclearization of North Korea and showed her gratitude to Indonesian government’s issuing statements against North’s nuclear test and missile launch. Park added that the summit this time was a momentum to take close diplomatic and economic cooperation to a higher level.
Park receives Kuwait Prime Minister Al-Sabah
President Park received Kuwait Prime Minister Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah who officially visited Korea on the invitation of Korean Prime Minister on 9 May at the Blue House. They discussed on direction of cooperation relationship, cooperation in infrastructure, ICT, health and culture, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula. Park expressed her gratitude about the implementation of the agreements made on the visit last March and hoped that the cooperation would expand to more areas in near future. Al-Sabah in respond said that Korea was the most important country among the Asian countries he was touring and hoped that his visit this time would draw good fruits. Park said that Kuwait’s new growth engine policy and Korea’s Creative Economy would draw win-win cooperation if collaborated. The two leaders singed various MOUs in new city development, energy, health, medicine and education and agreed to do their best for implementation of the MOUs. Meanwhile, Al-Sabah delivered personally handwritten letter of Emir of Kuwait that contains messages of friendly relationship between the two country and Park in respond asked Al-Sabah to deliver her gratitude to Emir of Kuwait.
