[Seogak carver Choi Byeong-du of Songjeon Seogak Research Center]
From a chemistry teacher to a seogak carver (seogak: carving words on wood)
Holding a retirement seogak exhibition with his pupils

Winning citations, Education Awards and Sinzisikin
15 years of devotion to seogak

It might be curious to know how a chemistry teacher of 42 years experience turned to be a seogak carver. Choi started his teaching career from 1973 in Dangjin City and opened his website ‘Choibyeongdu’s Chemistry School’ in 2001 which invited 70,000 subscribers. It was chosen as a recommended website for youth for 15 years. Thanks to his achievement, Choi received Ministerial Prize from the Ministry of Education in the science education category and Vice Ministerial Prize in the home-school materials category in 1999. He was also listed in ‘Sinzisikin (new intellectuals)’ by the North Gyeongsang Province Education Office and the Ministry of Education & Human Resource Development in 2002. Other prizes he received include The Korea Science Teacher Prize of The Year from the Korea Science & Engineering Foundation in 2004, the Korea Teacher Awards and the SBS Education Awards. Choi was rather doubtful when he first started seogak but soon he realized that it was not that different from chemistry. Chois’ most famous work is ‘Bamboo Seogak’. He poured all of his effort into this work for nearly 10 years as he loved bamboo dearly.

Creating a variety of works on bamboo with bratticing and engraving methods
Winning prizes at Silla Art Awards and Gyeongsangbukdo Calligraphy Awards

Choi says “Bamboo is hard to work with and it gets easily broken. It took me a long time to learn the seogak carving skill as I had to do it by myself without a teacher.” Choi only uses the bamboo which comes from Hadong County and applies bratticing and engraving methods to create a work on either whole or half part of the bamboo. Choi continues “There are various carving methods of seogak including engraving and embossing and seogak carvers also take into consideration the various styles of calligraphy to create a good work.” Choi proved his skills and diligence by holding 2 solo exhibitions and participating in more than 100 group exhibitions as well as winning the grand prize at the Silla Art Awards and the runner-up prize at the Gyeongsangbukdo Calligraphy Awards. He also served as a member of the judging panel for the Grand Art Exhibition of Korea and the Korea Calligraphic Literary Painting Exhibition.

Pupils preparing a retirement exhibition for Choi
“I want to show a matured beauty through my works”

In July last year, Choi’s pupils arranged an exhibition to celebrate his retirement under the title ‘Mind like the pine-tree, Heart like the bamboo’. Choi chose some of the words of the calligraphic style of his respected teacher Kim Chung-hyeon for 6 months for his work and also carved 5,400 words of The Diamond Sutra for the exhibition. The exhibition title ‘Mind like the pine-tree, Heart like the bamboo’ has always been Choi’s educational philosophy. He says “My father once said to me when I started to work as a teacher that I must treat students like my own children. And I bore this in mind and put it into practice through the harmony between being strict and being benevolent alongside my own educational philosophy.” When asked about his future plan, Choi answered “I want to create works which I poured all my heart and soul in order to interact with more people. There is a four-character Chinese idiom which I like; ‘Jul-tak-dong-si’. It means the chick inside the egg and the hen outside must peck the egg shell together to break it. Likewise, I want to make a better future and society by working together with my pupils.”
