[Artist Kim Wu-sik]
Painting a heart-warming home town scene on a canvas
A representative artist in North Gyeongsang Province
Affectionate thatched house and a bank around the field
Painting a beautiful childhood memory on a canvas
Seeing a thatched house made of earth and straws reminds us of a beautiful childhood memory or a trip to a rural area. If you, as a city dweller, do not have a time to visit the countryside to see it again, it might be a good idea to appreciate the works of artist Kim Wu-sik who mainly paints thatched houses surrounded by banks, grass and sunlight. Kim’s works are not as splendid or sophisticated like modern art works but the reality they contain creates a ripple in our heart. Kim liked painting very much since he was a child that he saved the money he received to buy crayons and papers instead of snacks and candies like many other children of his age. He once painted a picture on an important document of his father and was scolded. He liked to paint a thatched house, a path and the ridges between rice paddies. He says “I was often scolded by my strict mother at home. Then I went to my friend’s house to cheer myself up over a talk. My house was a tile-roofed while my friend’s was thatched and I easily became happy again by sitting against the earthen wall of the thatched house.”
Large works themed on the national flag and traditional parties
Kim is as famous for painting larges works as painting relatively small hometown scenes. The representative works of the former include ‘Dokdo’, The National Sprite’, ‘The Home of Dream’ and ‘Market Scene’. The largest one of thatched house, however, is 5m x 1.5m, containing 50 thatched houses which he took 4 years to complete and it is hung on the wall of his studio. You might feel like Kim shifted a whole village on a canvas. Another one of larges works is themed on traditional parties. The scene might be new to young generations but good enough to arouse nostalgia from older generations as a group of people slaughter a pig in a corner, another group of people sing and dance in the opposite corner and children run around the garden. When asked why he creates such big works, Kim answered “I have many story to tell and I want to tell all of it on a one big canvas.”
Holding a retrospective exhibition in 2007
Holding a 70 year old exhibition in April 2016
According to Kim, his father Kim Hong-sup is one of the founding members of children’s literary journal ‘Ssassak (grass, 1945) with Yun Suk-joong, Kim Jin-tae and Park Mok-wol. His father said that they named the journal as such to emphasize the importance of children as the generation to create a better world. His father’s poem once was selected at the Annual Spring Literary Contest hosted by The Seoul Shinmun in the 50s but he also was suffered for being a nationalist during the Korean War. Many writers and musicians regained their artistic value after the war but painters had to face a harsher environment. Kim explains “Many painters around that time painted selling works. But I did not want to compromise with the trend but kept working on my own style.” Kim worked with many of his colleagues before the Korean War. They formed ‘Miwuhoe’ around Daegu City and had held four exhibitions. After 50 years have passed, they gathered again and held a retrospective exhibition at the Cheongsong County Art Museum in 2007 to celebrate Miwuhoe’s 50 years history. Kim also held his 70 year old exhibition last month at the Daegu Culture and Arts Center in which he also displayed his tiger work.
Unquenchable passion for art
It has been 45 years that Kim devoted his life in painting. He pointed out the exhibition held at the Ancient Palace Museum in Taiwan as one of the most memorable exhibitions in which he participated as a member of the Korean Fine Arts Association in the 90s. The stackable side-dish made of ivory with delicate decorations of thatched houses and tree particles impressed him very much. It was the momentum for Kim to be an artist whose passion in creation never lasts. Currently, he is planning to create a large work with the Korean national flag for the theme to spread Korean culture and art to the world. Many of Kim’s works were sold and collected by many art lovers. Rather than following the trend, Kim diligently moves his brush to depict the realistic beauty of nature. This might be the reason that Kim and his works are still loved by many people.
