[Decorative craft artist Moon Soon-duk of Gallery Moon]
The decorative art and craft presented through the series works of beautiful woman paintings and lacquer works

28 years of devotion to folk art touching people’s heart
Folk art, as an art style, was first introduced to Korea in the 90s when the country started to adopt Western culture in earnest. Folk art is known to have begun in the 16~17 century Europe in a form of decorative art which people drew pictures on the surface of wooden furniture or kitchen utensils. The Korean people in fact did the same practice as those westerners from a long time ago thanks to its free styles and materials they can adopt. There are many folk artists in Korea nowadays but Moon Soon-duk, who has devoted 28 years of her life to folk art, stands out in terms of engagement with the public. She belongs to Chang-dong Art Village in Changwon City and runs Gallery Moon. She started to show a great interest in art from her teenage years and decided to study at an art academy instead of going to a university. She started to learn clay work first, moved on to stencil and then folk art. She obtained some of craft-related certificates in 1992 and eventually opened a gallery. Moon says “I didn’t need great skills like great artists to do craftworks. For me, it was like a mathematical formula meaning that I just needed to apply the formula to create, for example, a rose, chrysanthemum or landscape. And I found a great pleasure in this making process.” Moon now has 18 certificates in total.

Application of Korean paintings to create unique folk art
The popular themes of Moon’s folk art include lotus flower, peacock and a series of traditional beautiful woman emphasized with Korean colors and compositions. She continues “I studied a lot about the works of western folk art as well as oriental paintings and folk art including lacquer wares inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Then I combined them with Korean elements to create my own unique style. A good example is the series of traditional beautiful woman paintings in the Joseon Dynasty. But I wanted to reinterpret the works in my own terms.” In fact, Moon’s works have deeper and neater feeling than those traditional ones. She explains “I’ve recently created nearly 20 works of beautiful woman for solo exhibition. I tried to put the traditional elements of beauty while placing the tree and apricot flowers in a different composition in which I sensed a different feel.” Moon’s works are widely known for the vivid charm of decorative art and craft created by her fingertips and emotions. She says “My works are the source of the hope residing in my mind and decorative art and craft is the means of finding a beauty in my life.”

Introducing unique lacquer works
Apart from folk art paintings, Moon is also famous for her lacquered miniature furniture set, lacquered wooden cups and a lacquered cruet titled ‘I Need Wellbeing’. Although Moon had to go through a difficult and meticulous process to create these lacquer works, they were all made of eco-friendly materials and have a peculiar charm. Like she did in her folk paintings, she turned the traditional style into her own unique style in these lacquer works. For example, she attached paintings to the surface of the works and they are so vivid as if the pigments are about to ooze out. Also, she rarely used mother-of-pearl but mostly used varnishing itself to give restrained beauty instead of splendidness. In order to create perfect works, she didn’t mind making a constant travel to Namwon City, the home of lacquer works, to learn the authentic skills. Moon says “Once I start my work, it normally lasts until 2 to 3 a.m. But the physical fatigue I have to endure is nothing compared to the satisfaction I get when I see the work slowly shaping into perfection.”

Making tradition meet with modernity at decorative art
Moon’s passion in fostering talented folk artists is as unusual as her unique works. She is actively engaged in the promotional events and festivals of Chang-dong Art Village. She is also serving as Chairwoman of Gyeongnam Folk Art Association and as Director of Craft Art and Culture Department of the Lifelong Education Promotion Research Center in which she is passionately providing lectures and social contributions. Everybody can make an art work or craft work if one can learn the simple 20 basic skills according to Moon. When asked about her future plan, Moon said that she was planning to use decorative art as a means to mix traditional art with modern art. She explains “There is a decorative art museum on the west side of the Louvre Palace in France in which we can see various furniture, ceramics and glassworks from the Middle Age to today. Decorative art has an artistic value yet practicality and can communicate more easily with the public. I hope Korea also has a museum like this where we can compare tradition with modernity to create something new.” Moon added that she recently started to learn altar portrait of Buddha to expand the scope of her skills. Learning something new generally gives us new possibilities and inspirations and Power Korea hopes that Moon’s thirst for learning will bring yet another unique style in folk art this year.
