[Artist Kim Gyeong-ho (nickname: Manhae) of Gandang Gallery]

Modernized Mandala (Buddha’s picture) attracting attention
Contemplation on spiritual world awakens our mind
Artist Kim builds his unique style and methods

Kim has received a lot of praise from the people around him for his dexterity since he was a child. When he was an elementary school student, for example, he surprised the people by winning a prize at an art competition which was even reported in the local press. But his talent and passion in art had to be stopped due to the financial difficulty his family had faced and he worked hard instead of moving on to a school. With unextinguished thirst for art, however, he started sculpture at the age of 35 and pushed his passion further by taking the Cultural Heritage course at Kyungbuk Science College. During these years, he built the Traditional Culture Experience School by himself for the college and surprised the professors and his fellow students. Not only Kim’s dexterity made him popular but also his captivating personality. After a certain period of time passed, Kim started painting in earnest when he served as Chief Director of The Cyan Museum in Yeongcheon. And it now has been 20 years that Kim worked as a painter.

Contemplation on spiritual world and philosophy of Confucianism, Buddhism and Sun Taoism
Kim pours truth and future in his works

Kim is widely known as a Mandala (Buddha’s picture) artist. He creates his unique paintings by pouring philosophy of Confucianism, Buddhism and Sun Taoism with splendid and vivid color. One might feel the truth of all things in nature when appreciating one of his works. Kim says “I spent a lot of time thinking how to live and die and was curious about why our body is shaped as it is. Then I got enlightened and found beautiful compositions of my works by pouring the energy and spiritual world residing in my inner world and the reality outer world into them.” Kim learned art by himself through continuous thought on life and research on new styles and methods without much help from teachers. He continues “Being alone without a teacher actually gave me freedom and expansion as being instructed by a teacher might lead one to a similar style rather than his own. Interestingly, my hand already starts and finishes the painting before even thinking what to draw whenever I see the paper” adding that “I think my works tell about the universe we live in over just the common limited boundary of western and oriental paintings. Apart from philosophical part, I put the truth, future, longevity and luck of people in my works. I hope more artists would find ways to create their unique style rather than following the trend.”

Kim covers various genres
“I will awaken people’s spirit and soul through Korean culture”

Although Mandala is in the center of his works, Kim is also an expert at various other genres such as totem pole craft, Korean paper craft and wooden bier craft. He actually won the grand prize at the National Korean Paper Competition in 2003 and was invited to the National Korean Paper Craft Competition in 2007. When it comes to totem pole craft, he combines his totem pole martial art dance and totem pole ritual to create unique works. He actually mastered so called ‘heaven and earth martial art’ and gave a total pole martial art performance at the 100 Days of Cheondo Ritual commemorating the once destroyed Namademun (South Gate) in 2008 and another one for the opening ceremony of the International Multi-culture Association held at the National Assembly Visitor Center. Kim added that he values high of doing his best. Nothing is gained easily but from diligence, hard work and learning from someone better than oneself. In this respect, creating art works in various forms and styles is a challenge to himself according to Kim. He concludes “I will keep pioneering new styles and methods and will exert my effort in awakening people’s spirit and soul with Korean culture.”
