[Director Sim Jeong-bo of Gangwon Traditional Culture Research Society]
Sim establishes the society in 2010 to spread the beauty of Seogak (words carved on wood)

Recreating Jangseung (Korean traditional totem pole at the village entrance) and obtaining design patents
Director Sim Jeong-bo of Gangwon Traditional Culture Research Society liked roaming around all over the fields and mountains around his town from his early age. Sim especially was drawn to the ridges of the mountains waving endlessly along the sky line. Strolling absent-mindedly up and down the mountains, Sim came to a stop right in front of a couple of Jangseung one day. And the couple instantly created a stir in his heart. He remembered "I was touched by the totem poles standing still for many years. The wood was worn out, the line obscure and the moss here and there. Nevertheless, They just stayed there and I felt some kind of pride in their endurance and consistency." Since that day, Sim started to carve wood into Jangseung day and night while collecting folk materials time to time. After about 2 years, Sim started to travel all over the nation to study Janseung in each region and create his own style of Jangseung and Sotdae (a pole signifying prayer for a good harvest). Thanks to his passion and effort, he obtained a design patent for Sotdae in 2008 and another for Jangseung in 2009.

Creating unique style
To satisfy his desire to know everything about Jangseung, he has participated in almost all exhibitions and fairs relating to the totem poles and met numerous masters (teachers) no matter how much it would cost him. Sim's works are famous for their unique curved style like the river winds its way. And this style, with his long time career in the field, has made him a master in the field. If it is for the Jangseung made in the traditional way and esthetic value, Sim never cares for its troublesome process no matter how long it takes. Great technique and knowhow he achieved, Sim then tried to find a way of spreading the beauty of Seogak to the world and established Gangwon Traditional Culture Research Society in 2010. Seogak is a three-dimensional form of art applied with various carving methods such as intaglio, emboss, etc. Sim explained "The styles of Seogak differ from country to country. Korea, for example, prefers carving at a 45¢ª angle while China and Japan at a 90¢ª angle. But regardless the angles, good carvers know well about what kind of knives on what wood they have to use."

Sim's works hanging on Bomun Temple in Wonju and Baekdam Temple in Inje
Establishment of Gangwon Traditional Culture Research Society in 2010 and participating in Master's Technique Transfer Academy

Sim obtained a certificate of Traditional Woodcraft Instructor in 2009 and is working as a Seogak instructor of Master's Course of Calligraphic Paintings at Korean University and at the Korea Rail Network Gangwon Headquarters.

He also won numerous prizes including the grand prize at 20th Wonju Chiakje Jangseung Contest in 2001, gold and silver prizes in the Seogak and crafts category of 26th Folk Art Contest in 2008, the best prize and the best instructor prize at 7th Donga International Art Contest in 2010 and 2012 respectively. In terms of exhibitions, Sim has held and participated in more than 50 solo and group exhibitions. You can meet his works at Bomun Temple in Wonju and Baekdam Temple in Inje to name a few. Meanwhile, Sim is actively passing down his knowhow and skills to his pupils covering from choosing, grabbing and sharpening the knives to the whole carving procedure on a weekly basis at the Gangwon Traditional Culture Research Society. The pupils range from elementary school students to adults. Sim said "Some of my pupils are now running their own workshops and I feel really worth that more people are finding pleasure and happiness in Seogak." Meanwhile, Sim is participating in the 'Training Programme' of the Master's Technique Transfer Academy hosted by Yechong (The Federation of Korea Art & Cultural Organizations) as a Seogak instructor from this year.

Government support is needed to talented young wood carvers
Sim continued "I want to be a person who can accept things as they are rather than seeking the way to show off. This is very important for me to empty my mind to create my unique style." Meanwhile, Sim is regretful about the lack of government support to promising young wood carvers as most of them are experiencing financial difficulties. So he suggests to the government to bring up a simple yet effective support system as the complex procedure often made them give up on the benefit that they might otherwise can receive. Sim concluded "If you give 100% of your heart and physical effort to your work, whether it is big or small, the public will respond to the work with much praise."
